5.0 out of 5 stars Does the job, 26 May 2012
Needing to play Spanish language and gundog training CDs, this is ideal. It works from the mains and batteries. Radio reception seemed set to Radio Four default and it was good with the aerial down. Amazing value.

4.0 out of 5 stars Entertaining yarn, 19 May 2012
Page turner...good choice of location...characterisation so so but it works! Now, more than before, I want to visit Iceland. However, I am not likely to be reading the sequel.

4.0 out of 5 stars Excellent, 7 May 2012
This review is from: The Fear Index (Hardcover)
A combination of Michael Crichton and Henning Mankell yet why use these reference points when I was reading Harris' output long before? Presumably because more people will have heard of Crichton than Harris and possibly consider Mankell more "literary" than Harris. The Fear Index cannot be considered literary but it is well-written. Bravo. I finished it in a twenty-four hour period and cannot state that about many books in recent years. As with much of Crichton's oeuvre, it's also thought-provoking.

4.0 out of 5 stars Be careful, 6 May 2012
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This product fulfils the number one requirement...but may be wobbly in some vehicle cup-holders. So, for one of our cars, I am back to using a mug with a slightly wider base.

DK Eyewitness Top 10 Travel Guide: Copenhagen
DK Eyewitness Top 10 Travel Guide: Copenhagen
by Antonia Cunningham
Edition: Paperback

4.0 out of 5 stars Provided all I wanted to know, 6 May 2012
...although I did have a copy of The Rough Guide to Denmark with me on the trip. The maps are more than adequate, even for getting to Assistens Kirkegard to see graves of Hans Christian Andersen and Soren Kierkegaard.

4.0 out of 5 stars Entertaining, if nothing else, 12 April 2012
This review is from: Bel Ami (DVD) (DVD)
A good cast and fairly good settings start this film off on the right tracks. However, the storyline is a little weak...returning French cavalry officer down on his luck, gets a helping hand...abuses his position...and so on. Kick myself for not having read the Maupassant story first.

Winter King: The Dawn of Tudor England

4.0 out of 5 stars It really does address the gap many probably have about the early Tudors, 11 April 2012
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
Why not five stars? Two reasons: firstly, the print size; I do not need reading specs and, yet, find it is just a bit on the small side. Secondly, whilst the writing style is good, it is not quite as captivating as with, say, Mary Lovell in Bess of Hardwick. I cannot pinpoint why so it may well be a really subjective view!

If you want/need to know about the early Tudors, this seems like a very comprehensive account. I will not mention how many pages of sources Thomas Penn identifies...

From somebody who is not a music critic, this simply sounds good. It was Youtube which led me to the Glenn Gould interpretation.

The Silent and the Damned
The Silent and the Damned

4.0 out of 5 stars Volume 2!, 3 April 2012
The Javier Falcon story continues although Seville does not come across as so well-described as in The Blind Man Of Seville. However,, as the back cover blurb from the Literary Review states "its plotting is persuasive, its characterization shrewd". Indeed.

Belgrade: A Cultural and Literary History (Cities of the Imagination)
Belgrade: A Cultural and Literary History (Cities of the Imagination)

4.0 out of 5 stars Useful once you have visited Belgrade, 30 Mar 2012
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This book was purchased after the decision to visit Belgrade was made; the need to know something of the background to this city was paramount - and there are not too many publications. So, what's it like? Well, it was useful to know that the modern Serbian language owes its existence to Obradovię (1739-1811) and Karadzię (1787-1864), along with other `nuggets' but the prose does not always flow.

There is a simple map of central Belgrade and the book would really benefit from two more: one showing Belgrade in the contemporary European setting and one from a historic period, e.g. from a certain point in the Austro-Hungarian empire. Norris weaves the cultural and literary history around the streets, each chapter addressing a new area. I was only a third of the way through the book when I arrived in the city and must admit that the latter part seemed more enjoyable: could be the fact of being able to place locations having seen many of them.
