If you love your gastroporn and love a good read of a cook book then this will not disappoint. True, i have not yet made anything but i have only had the book a couple of weeks. I bought after Nigella reccommends it in her book. I love Scandanvian cookery. It is a good mix of Icelandic, Norwegian, Danish, Finnish and Swedish rather than the typical Danish and Swedish. The little anecdotes and stories transport you somewhere else and make you feel all Christmassy. Chocca with almonds, marzipan, cream, butter, cardamon and cinnamon - not for dieters. Lovely cook book, just could be improved with afew photos.

5.0 out of 5 stars love it, too many highlights!, 25 Oct 2013

This review is from: Autobiography (Paperback)
Over all this is a great book, so witty, so many great one liners. I kept wryly smiling looking up from this book and read it in 4 days i was so hooked. His prose and descriptions of Manchester set this apart from your avergae biog. His writing about his school days is particularly evocative. Having grown up not far away i can strongly relate to his descriptions. He comes across alot warmer than you may imagine and many of his words feel heart felt, particularly when describing the (many) deaths he has experienced around him.

Bad points - this is not your typical autobiography by the way that you sometimes feel like he has ommitted parts of the story. Perhaps its just me but you are left wondering are his mum and sister still alive, does he still get on with them, did he help the parents of the Moors Murders victims he mentions meeting, does he still get on with Sandie Shaw, how did his relationships end etc. He mentions wconsidering having a child but again, you do not really hear how it concludes. Some of it is very vague. Some however are extremely detailed like about the legal wrangling, perhaps too much so but i can understand how he wants to get his side of the story out there.

Good points - The description of Julie Burchill is really worth the price of the book alone, really funny. Also high points are all about his school days and childhood, his affection for Marr and compassionate writing for the plight of animals, his sometimes funny celebrity encounters are also highlights of the book. Also he is not frightened to speak up about the dead (Tony Wilson and John Peel). These two guys are often talked about like saints but this is not a road Morrissey goes down.

Definitely recommend.

Great book. Fantastic photography again and atmospheric writing that whisks you off to both preparing and eating meals with Nigel. His calm, earthy, style and unpretentious titles are the perfect antidote to in your face celebrity chefs.
This is a huge piece of work like Tender and reads like a diary interspersed with recipes. As a vegetarian there are plenty of veggies recipes in this book. I was very happy with my purchase.

charming set of 4 figures that bend. My toddler son love them. They can stand up, sit down and (his favourite) do the splits. Well constructed but a shame mums apron has frayed apart after only a month.

4.0 out of 5 stars afew niggles but like overall, 1 Oct 2013

This review is from: Wholefood Baking (Paperback)
lovely pictures of recipes but unfortunately i do not know which picture relates to which recipe. This is quite frustrating when you are tring to envisage a result.
Also the rapadura sugar that is called for is unavalible everywhere i have looked. I tried my well stocked health shop and also one in a bigger town but they did not have it. Although the author gives an overview of substitutions at the beginning, it would be more helpful if in the actual recipes she said stuff like "if you cant find rapadura, use molasses or brown sugar" etc. I have had to do a bit of guess work and trial and error.
Bad stuff aside, the recipes (only made one so far) are very tasty and wholesome sounding and i like the photos and type face. Author seems to know her stuff.

I bought this without seeing it as there were lots of good reviews of this series. I am however disappointed. Most of the designs are for girls and most of the desiogns seem very dates now - seem very big/wide looking. I am sd as i was looking for some funky knitting patterns for my toddler son.

So much more than a cook book, this weaves recipes with a story of family history and gorgeous old photos. Recipes are simple and based on fresh produce. There is also advice aboout utensils you may need. I loved this book so much that when it went in a flood at my home last year, i had to buy it back again!
