Go Fast [DVD]

4.0 out of 5 stars Is his cover blown?, 15 Dec 2011
This review is from: Go Fast [DVD] (DVD)
I really enjoyed this film. Brilliant entertainment, with a well developed story and good acting.

A cop gets off lightly for being undercover. His partner ends up shot and he gets involved with a mission to hunt the killer down.

It is somewhat far fetched though you cannot blame it, or call it a bad film for that reason. It has a really good soundtrack. Brilliant and original dance music throughout.

Gripping with some uncertainty and tense moments. One to watch with a ice cool beverage in front of the TV.

3.0 out of 5 stars Good but nothing outstanding, 14 Dec 2011
This review is from: The Prestige [DVD] [2006] (DVD)
I think this film is good for the relationship between Christian Bale and Hugh Jackman - the main characters. They both have very different reasons for wanting to be a magician. They constantly strive to be better than each other, both realising how far they have to go and what they have to do to fulfil that desire of being the best magician. Quite good to see them battle it out.

The twist is quite blatant and they play on it a lot. Once you have got it then you have to sit through quite a lot of them playing around with the idea.

The final summary is terrible. Though, it is good to see how heartless both the main characters really are. I think that is the main trick and twist in the film. Something that Nolan might have brought to the picture.

Good entertainment. Though, give me Inception any day of the week and I would watch that over this.

A fantastic film really. Once in a while you see how the French create their blockbusters, and you have to think that Hollywood has something to take on board. This film is visually affective and I appreciate that a lot.

The story is not that original, though a really nice idea and well developed. There are a few twists and things to guess at along the way - it does keep you involved. It is all done incredibly well and presented in a manner that is thoughtful and entertaining.

The perfect film for a lazy day.

5.0 out of 5 stars "I guess I am just hard wired that way", 7 Dec 2011
A really brutal film that portrays prostitution exactly how you would imagine it.
There is nothing remotely pleasing about anything that happens in the film. It is a sad film and you could feel somewhat sorry for the main character. Though, like he says. "I guess I am just hard wired that way".

It is filmed as a documentary stroke film, and this really allows you to understand the character and the business. It is almost completely from the punters perspective and it just lets the character role through the whole situation, really allowing you to follow the whole "obsession".

Throughout the film the characters are trying to convince you that this is the best thing ever. Though, there are just little things like the slang terms and call signs. PSE (porn star experience) "Another one of your Johns" - "You wanna go for a ride". The cheapened expressions really devalue the whole act and show it exactly for what it is.

There are re-enactments throughout the film, and they are such a good idea. They play perfectly on the idea of fantasy and reality. The main character even goes as far as directing the re-enactments. Which really brings it to life and re-jumps that idea of fantasy and reality.

I guess some peoples fantasies revolve around this sort of business. The fantasy being whatever the punter can sexually afford - the reality being there is nothing more than a sexual transaction. Even he does not want anything more than that. Brutally realistic it really looks like they have done the research into the character and the story.

Summary. An interesting delve into a sub-culture.

5.0 out of 5 stars Death to the Demon, 4 Dec 2011

This is a brilliant film.

I believe the film is about the people with A LOT of power in the world. How they have to survive and what they have to deal with to stay at the top. The final scene really summarises this belief for me. He talks about the best game designer in the world and how they should suffer for their actions.

It is a rebellious film for me, questioning that urge for control and power.

Any thoughts? Please feel free to comment.

5.0 out of 5 stars Amazing, 2 Dec 2011
This review is from: Pandorum [DVD] (DVD)
This film just gets better and better. There is a lot of action, a really good story that is well written and full of twists and turns. They deliver the narrative with characters becoming drawn into the action, and you always wonder who and what is going to get where. There is at least two different plots going on at once throughout the whole film, so there is so much involvement and atmosphere.

A compelling piece of cinema, that really griped me from the start to the finish. Entertainment at its finest!

5.0 out of 5 stars Spot on!, 12 Nov 2011
This TV is brilliant in all aspects. I read a bad review from a major player, saying they could not get a real skin tone on the TV. I agreed at first, though they must have missed the option to turn off Flesh Tone in the advanced menu. That sorts out the picture and then you are left with an amazing vibrant colourful picture. The colours can be altered to give a really deep clear tone in component. To me personally, I think it is really pleasing to the eyes. With a bit of tweaking you can alter the colours to get a brighter colour tone, though I personally enjoy the vitality of the picture in its pre-set mode. Really deep and colourful.

The other thing to talk about is the sound; the 10W speakers really pack a punch. Playing computer games you can get a real good sense of direction. The sound is not tiny at all, which I have had problems with in the past. It sounds real and not forced; and you can turn the volume quite loud with no problems from the TV. The bass is not exactly earth shattering though it does add a good depth to any film or game.

It was easy to set the remote up with my sky box, the code is a default one for most generic TV's. So with a bit of searching I soon found the code. The remote is simple really, not overcrowded and all the important buttons are easy to reach.

There are only two minor things that I can point out. I cannot seem to get any sound from the Audio Out plug unless it is on the TV setting. I was kind of looking forward to playing my Xbox through my home stereo speakers. Though I have not found a way to do that as such. Two. There are not a lot of options in the menu. I had a Samsung before this, you could alter absolutely everything to do with the TV - from the start up screen to the lights on the front of the TV - and there were plenty of pre-sets with the video and sound. It just seems a bit limited for this TV. Though you can alter everything that is important but there could be more options.

To say this a TV from a company I have never heard of. They have made this TV to prove something. I believe they have succeeded with a great success. It is not perfect though what is these days??

Cheap and really good quality. It delivers with outstanding results in all the areas that count. Spot on really!!!

Do not get me wrong. The film is not that bad. Though it is completely flawed. Logically and theoretically not possible. For a film that is trying to be clever, it completely fails. If you think about it then you will see why it is flawed. I will not give away any spoilers, though, just think about the idea behind getting him into the time machine. How would that be possible? It would have to be an eternal event or nothing at all. Otherwise it would just not be possible!

1.0 out of 5 stars Ouch. What a mistake!, 18 Oct 2011
The main point for me is. The main character is far from likable! He has the attitude of a ten year old, that is naughty because he can be. Rich beyond belief he feels the need to respect no person other than himself. I presume the films ends where he becomes a man and everyone loves him? If that is not how the film ends then the main character must remain a shallow, arrogant, chauvinistic, selfish - and the list goes on. The list goes on to the point where I had to switch it off. Entertainment does not have to be this gut wrenching. The film is beyond entertainment!

The other thing is. It really comes across as if everything was put there for a reason. It is trying so hard to fit into the idea of itself. That idea of being the hip careless film that rides in and proves itself. It goes past the point of being convincing to the point where it looks like a tick list by a producer. You can tell down to the point where everything was placed for that special emotional effect: laugh here - think he is cool here - think he is sentimental here - be emotional with him here - think he is brilliant here. To the point where the film actually turns into one long shopping receipt for the producer.

It is not an easy film to watch. Maybe for a philistine. Though I personally still do not understand the appeal.

Please watch Bill and Ted. Jay and Silent Bob for the light hearted humour in a film. Please watch Iron Man for a film that actually has a person that is likable but arrogant. At least those films have the common decency to respect their audience as human beings. I felt like a monkey clapping some cymbals. Though I probably turned it off just before the good bit?!

Verdict. The script is terrible. The acting is crude and the character is far from likable. It tries too hard to make an impression - the wrong impression.

If there is ever a film that deserves one star. This is it!

An easy to watch and thoroughly enjoyable film. The story is simple yet interesting. The characters are interesting and the acting is fairly good. The direction is worthy of appreciation. The FX are really good and show plenty of realism. The start of the film might not be that gripping but the ending is good.

Do not expect it to be the best film you have ever seen. Though, if you are looking to be entertained and don't like really rubbish films, this is one of those films that has enough qualities to keep you interested and entertained.
