This review is from: The Big Fisherman (Paperback)
Read this first over fifty years ago so it was good to catch up with a modern edition. Now realise that historical accuracy is not this novel's strongest point but it is still a 'rollicking' good story based on a brave concept of trying to imagine Simon Peter's reactions to meeting and then following Jesus.

Beautifully written as you might expect from this author and very informative. This is a sympathetic portrayal of the poet and the blending of the poetry with the life brings both into focus.

Women in the Earliest Churches (Society for New Testament Studies Monograph Series)
by Ben Witherington III
Edition: Paperback
Price: 33.39

5.0 out of 5 stars If you enjoyed Witherington's 'Women in the Ministry of Jesus' then you will really appreciate this., 21 Jan 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This volume follows on from Witherington's first foray into the subject in 'Women in the Ministry of Jesus'. Here the author widens out the scope of his study to include the role of women in the Pauline Epistles, Acts and those aspects of the Gospel writers' approach to women not covered in his first volume. This is a vital accessory for anyone who wants to approach the subject of women in the early Church from a basis of sound scholarship.

by Ben Witherington III
Edition: Paperback
Price: 33.12

5.0 out of 5 stars A very worthwhile look at this controversial subject., 21 Jan 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
With the role of women within the Anglican church still under heated debate, this scholarly and balanced approach to how Jesus reacted to and with women in the Gospel accounts of his ministry is to be highly commended. The material is thoroughly researched and coolly yet sympathetically appraised.

4.0 out of 5 stars Certainly worth the purchase, 19 Aug 2011
A fascinating book for anyone interested in the subject. The research involved is examplary and the author has collected a huge amount of material covering the subject. My real quibble is with the layout: not always easy on the eye and a little 'tweaking' would have worked wonders for making it more accessible to the reader. In particular the listing of known hermits and anchorites in Appendix C is something of a nightmare to follow and yet such information must surely be an important reason for anyone wanting to own the book rather than just researching it on line. However, I am still very pleased to have my own copy and no doubt familiarity will make it more user-friendly.
