5.0 out of 5 stars Great quality part for solving a common problem, 8 April 2016

I cracked the glass cover on my Macbook Pro trackpad a couple of years ago and finally got around to replacing it with this part. The component itself is completely identical on the surface and functions exactly the same. Now that it's installed, the Mac is perfectly back to normal. Installation, just because of the way that Macs are designed to use the unibody case, is moderately difficult: don't attempt it if you haven't done any kind of repair work at all. You will need the right tools, as magnetised screwdrivers, or you won't be able to remove all of the many screws. You might also benefit from using a magnifier as some of the connectors you will need to disconnect are very small and delicate. Some of the screws are very short and tiny -- keep a small cardboard box for them and then draw circles around them to note where they came from.

The challenge is all because the connector for the trackpad is underneath the motherboard -- so you have to remove the fans, disconnect everything on the motherboard, remove the battery and then take the old trackpad out and install the new one. The good news is that, if you didn't adjust the trackpage correctly, then you only have to remove the battery to fix it. When you replace the motherboard, make sure none of the connectors are looped back under it, as that's annoying.

But, otherwise -- this part is great for solving a common problem, and with patience and a couple of YouTube videos you can do your own repair.

5.0 out of 5 stars Does the job perfectly, 1 Jun. 2013

I have a Canon EOS M which seemed to attract dust particles from day one (there is no shutter or mirror over the sensor). Dust spots were driving me *insane* as I tend to do a lot of photographs which feature sky prominently. A blower brush only goes so far in these situations and, since I live in Jutland, sending the camera in for a clean would just take too long and be horribly expensive. I consulted with a colleague who allayed my fears about cleaning something so sensitive and expensive myself, I decided I would try out these little beauties (after having a look on YouTube for a guide).

It literally takes about ten seconds to do this, and I'm including dipping the swab in that estimate. One continuous pass (top to bottom as that's the way it fits the EOS M sensor) and you are done. The solution evaporates quickly (but not so quickly to cause a static build up) and you're good to go. I took lots of f22 to f25 sky pictures the verify the job and there wasn't a single trace of dust. Now I just have the EOS M's shocking focus issues to contend with.

If you have dust on you sensor and a blower isn't moving it -- try these.

The card works flawlessly with a Canon EOS M, with none of the video buffer issues that you might see on slower cards.

3.0 out of 5 stars No Dr Strangelove!, 26 Nov. 2012
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
Five stars for the films, three for this set.

The quality of the films goes without saying, but bizarrely, Dr Strangelove is not included in the UK version of this collection. I was made after Lolita, so age can't be a reason. My other quibble is that it would have been nice to have the option of the US cut of The Shining, but this also absent.

Brabantia Laundry Basket, 40 L - Fingerprint Proof Stainless Steel with Woodline Wooden Lid
Brabantia Laundry Basket, 40 L - Fingerprint Proof Stainless Steel with Woodline Wooden Lid

2.0 out of 5 stars Sadly Disappointing, 11 Oct. 2012
I love Brabantia products -- their kitchen bins are unbeatable. This thing though, falls very short. I had been searching for the right laundry basket for a long time, and was delighted when this one came up; after all, with Brabantia's experience in making containers for disposing of stuff that smells, how could I go wrong?

Here's how this one goes wrong, from the top down:

1. The sorting holes
Sounds like a good idea, right? One aperture high temperature wash and the other for low? The holes are so small, you can just about get a sock through each one. Forget trying to stuff a pair of jeans through this, it's much easier just to remove the lid and poke them in that way. Which leads me to...

2. The capacity
Because the laundry bag is partitioned, it just never has enough space for whatever you want to put in there -- so as soon as you've rammed your pair of trainer socks in there, it's full.

3. The elastic
The laundry bag has an elasticated top on it, which keeps it suspended when it is snugly fixed to the top. Until, that is, you put something in it, if it weighs more than a newborn kitten then the weight pulls it down and it just slips off.

So, not an unmitigated disaster one-star review, (if you only ever let your laundry backlog build up to a pair of socks and perhaps a wrist band then this might be for you), but very close to being completely useless.

3.0 out of 5 stars Use with Caution, 28 Aug. 2012
After borrowing one of these from my wife to write my long-form poem "One Hundred Reasons Why I'm Not Putting Up the Shelves This Weekend, Maybe I'll Do it Next Week" I can state that, contrary to some of the other men's reviews here, these pens are perfectly compatible with mains de l'homme.

However, I have the sneaking suspicion that I am starting to grow breasts. On the plus side, though my colour coordination is just so much better. Actually, thinking about it, it's all good.

A Song Of Stone
A Song Of Stone

1.0 out of 5 stars Astonishing - But Not in a Good Way, 7 Feb. 2012
This review is from: A Song Of Stone (Paperback)
When I finished reading this dismal book, I was left wondering if Banks had just cranked it out as a Contractual Obligation. I normally like Banks' books -- I'm particularly fond of The Crow Road, amongst his other more popular works -- but this is dire. From cold beginning to mean-spirited close, it seems to mock the reader throughout.

I don't necessarily need my reading to be happy affairs, but in this case it's almost as if Banks was battling a depression at the time and this was his way of lashing out at his readers -- particularly the very ending.

In its favour, it has brevity -- it shouldn't take up much of your time if you do feel like reading it; but then, you have so much more to do with your time. If you do feel the need to read something short, Scottish and philosophical you could do worse than Poor Things by Alasdair Gray or Pfitz by Andrew Crumey.

A Box Of Matches
A Box Of Matches
by Nicholson Baker
Edition: Hardcover

4.0 out of 5 stars A small book about small things., 14 April 2003
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This review is from: A Box Of Matches (Hardcover)
This small book seems at first to be not about very much. Baker’s books tackle small subjects ( a shoelace, bottle feeding a baby, not writing a biography) in very profound ways.
A Box of Matches is concerned with the minutae of one person’s life through a small window of time across a few days. The beauty here is that Baker has discarded much of the brash intellectualism of his previous books and just tells it as it is. This book has a much more human feel to it, and there is almost an air of sadness throughout the book. The tragedy of the everyday is felt in the cadences of the prose, and captures the atmosphere (the dark kitchen, the fire growing each morning) perfectly. That’s not to say there is no humour in this book – I found myself laughing out loud at some of the anecdotes within, particularly concerning his cat. The narrator’s duck, beautifully described, is a superb character.
The book begins and ends quietly, and not much happens on the surface, but it will stay with you for a very long time.

Autechre - Gantz Graf [DVD]
Autechre - Gantz Graf [DVD]
Dvd ~ Autechre

4.0 out of 5 stars Classic ae, 10 April 2003
This review is from: Autechre - Gantz Graf [DVD] (DVD)
Good old Autechre. They tend to divide opinions. Some people love their work almost blindly, many people absolutely despise it.
Well, you get out of it what you put in. I think they are fantastic, and won't hear a bad thing said about them. Having said that, I can understand why some people just regard their music as noise. It can be abstract, random sounding - but there is a lot of beauty there, and a lot of hidden structure.
Gantz graf can sound a bit full on, especially at first listen, but listened alongside the visual here, it makes it more palatable to the uninitiated.
This is a superb single, has a different sound from many of their more recent work, and is slightly more accessible than tunes of late - but it's still classic Autechre, and has all their hallmarks. It won't fill any dance floors (well, none of the ones I've been on), but it's a cracking tune.
