5.0 out of 5 stars The greatest work of literature in existence, 28 July 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
And no I'm not exaggerating. The Alexandria Quartet is not only the greatest work I've ever read, it's the greatest work I ever will read. Shakespeare, Chaucer, Proust and Dickens would have got down on their knees to Durrell such is the sublimity of the writing. It's six years since I last read the novels and even today scenes stand out to me with such clarity I could have been standing there watching them occur. Narouz making his final stand against his brother Nessim while striking down bats with a whip, Darley and Nessim sharing a tin of olives in the hall, Justine in the house of child prostitutes, the gay, transvestite Scobie hilariously managing to get himself made head of the secret police, Pombal bustling about in the way that fat frenchmen bustle about. The duck hunt. Pursewarden's monologue, and of course Justine and Melissa, Balthazar and Capodistria, Mountolive and Clea. And then Alexandria!

Durrell's prose isn't good. It's exquisite. You can literally smell the city from the language.

The Quartet isn't for everyone, it's dense, tough and takes no prisoners, if you're not up to the challenge then you'll know within the first twenty pages. Justine is the hardest of the novels to read as Durrell sublimates himself into Darley and Darley's obsession so completely, but if you can get through all four books, and appreciate them, you won't need me to tell you that its a book that will change you.

5.0 out of 5 stars Sublime music, 12 April 2013
What a great piece of music. Uplifting and energetic. Highly enjoyable. Apparently some people don't like it. But these people don't like anything or anyone that don't agree with their views. Sad really.
