4.0 out of 5 stars Struggle for Identity, 30 Aug. 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
It's a classic book, with a classic theme - the hunt for personal identity. The story line is haunted, for me, by the knowledge of the author's life and, more significantly, her death. It is poignant, the play between the character's struggles with managing real life and the knowledge of the final outcome of that same struggle for the author.

Definitely worth reading, and reading over again, but make sure you are in a happy place first!

5.0 out of 5 stars Winter is here, 5 Jun. 2013

The story continues, develops, takes on some unexpected twists and turns. I found myself sympathising with characters I had previously loathed, whilst still despising them; while I could predict some of the action, there were moments when I was taken completely by surprise.

Martin writes believable characters in the midst of some totally weird situations; characters behave in really complex ways, just like real people do and I like the way Martin captures the way people don't always do the things you think they will do. I also like the way, because it is written from different perspectives, you get a variety of view points and you get a glimpse into how miscommunication, misinterpretation and confusions come about.

I couldn't put it down until I got to that point where you know that if you read for too much longer, you will finish the book but you don't want to finish the book - oh the agony of that dilemma! I now have to decide how long I can put off buying the next one.

I was surprised by this book. I hadn't expected to find it quite so funny or quite so much fun to read. The story is told through a variety of narrators, who each in turn take up the tale and each one has their own 'voice'. I loved it.

Great read, made good holiday entertainment. Central characters are believable and the story has moments of great social and cultural comment but it isn't a heavy, overly judgemental book. For those with no real concept of the racial repression in the American South, this is a gentle way to learn a little - and it may stimulate a desire to find out more!

The film does it justice, too.

I watched the TV series on DVD; lots of great actors and thought the story was absorbing, given the number of central characters who all have well drawn personalities! The book more than lived up to the promise. Well crafted writing, great characterisation, lots of twists and turns, with believable consequences.

The fantasy angle is well played, with good use of the extraordinary. Have had to restraint myself from buying the entire series in one go!

Winter is coming...

Enjoyed this very much. Having watched the film, I wanted to get the whole story. Easy to read, the story flows along and is well constructed. Not a challenging read but it is designed more for the teen market. Perfectly enjoyable holiday reading for the grown up, though!

I've read Fitzgerald before, some i like, some not. This is ok but some of the stories I found a little stilted and many feel quite dated. But then, it is the product of its era! Reading the title story actually put me off watching the movie, though!
