George Saunders is a wonderful writer. These stories are funny, sad and moving, and his writing style, with dialogue particularly, is pure joy.

Read it, it is a good book. But for the love of god, don't adopt the parenting styles. The behaviour she describes often crosses the line into child abuse - and just because it works, doesn't mean it's okay.

Asian-American (and Bristish) children may be more successful than non-Asian counterparts, but the methods which Chua advocates in this book can also create severe mental health problems. A recent study by a female Asian-American professor at Columbia discovered:

- Suicide is the second leading cause of death among Asian American women, ages 15-24.

- Asian American women, ages 15-24 and over 65, have the highest female suicide rates across all racial/ethnic groups.

- Asian American adolescent girls (grades 5-12) demonstrate the highest rates of depression across both race/ethnicity and gender.

- "Model minority" expectations and family pressures often are cited as factors of suicide.

Chua's books is supposedly a "self-parody" - but in the end, she is extremely self-congratulatory about her methods and their success. This satisfaction is misplaced in my opinion.
