I'm still enjoying this series, the books are well written and the story-lines fast paced. But... I wish the author would develop Rachel's character a little more. After 10 books she is still the immature, selfish, headstrong witch she was in the very first book. She charges in to situations without regard for her own safety and, more importantly, the safety of those who have to pull her out of whatever hole she's found herself in.

As a result, the stories are starting to get a little formulaic - Rachel dashes in to a burning building to rescue a familiar from a tree, despite being told it's a trap and gets caught by whoever is the baddie for this book and gets rescued by Ivy/Glenn/Jenks. Oh yes, don't forget the obligatory trip to A&E after getting beaten up again. So much for being a "kick-ass heroine", the only ass that gets kicked is her's - every time!!

I don't know whether the author has stunted the character's development deliberately or she has (as another reviewer suggests) run out of ideas, but it is starting to get a little predictable.

Goods were promptly delivered and well packaged (which it needs to be, given the way your average Postie shoves packages through the letter box) and contained everything you need (including loads of jumper cables), except...

Absolutely NO documentation whatsoever!! I mean not even a slip of paper pointing to the manufacturer's web-site where a circuit diagram or or data sheets on the lcd display and sensor or any other documentation could be found. Nothing. Zip. Nada. Our survey said... uh-urrrrrrr.

Quite a shame, really. It's not going to stop me from using the kit, just a major pain in the rear and quite unnecessary.

As a kit, you would expect some documentation, surely? Not an unreasonable expectation I would think.

P.S Just discovered that it *doesn't* contain all that you need. The Utrasonic distance sensor has 4 x pins on it's header board. And guess what? No M/F jumpwires are included, only M/M jumpwires. Not clever at all. If you look at the product photo it suggests that these are included.

... damn but Rachel is annoying. Kick ass heroine? More like whiney little...witch.

She's impulsive, headstrong (but without the brains of an earth worm to back it up), charges off without thinking or listening to those more capable than herself. She uses people without thinking of anyone but herself, often putting them in danger as a result.

She complains that Ivy cannot seperate sex and her blood needs. Yet Rachel cannot seperate sex and danger and her relationship with Ivy is more about satisfying her craving for danger than genuine feelings for a friend.

All in all, if the author's aim was to create a central character who deserves a good slap, then she has succeeded. If her aim was to create a "kick ass heroine", then fail. The only person's ass that gets kicked regularly is Rachel's (she must be on 1st name basis with the doctors at the ER by now) and without a host of supporting friends, she would have died before the end of the first book.

Don't get me wrong, the books are well written and the storyline is engrossing, I just wish Rachel had been written as a stronger character. If she was male, I'd want to yell at him to man up and grow a pair!!

I'll admit to being hooked on this series. Ignore comments about this being "chicklit" - ok, so the main two characters are female, so what? The storyline is gripping, fast paced and the characters are interesting and well developed. The author balances character development with plot development better than most of this genre.

But...

At times, the main character is annoying, she's constantly getting herself into scrapes, charging headlong into situations like a bull in a china shop and relying on others to get her out of trouble. At first I wanted to slap her, then I wanted to strangle her, before finally starting to root for the demon Big Al. She's a powerful witch who seems to use her fists to get her out of trouble more than her magic!! Her obsession with tagging the bad guy at all costs blinds her to everything else.

But...

I love these books, they are inteligently written, with an attention to detail without overloading you with trivia. A storyline which keeps you coming back for more, wanting to know what happens next. Will Rachel and Ivy finally "get it on"? Will the Demon Big Al drag her down into the depths, will she finally get herself into a scrape even Ivy cannot extract her from or will she at long last learn patience!!!

If you love this genre, then you won't be disappointed.
