BT 610 Dual Band Wi-Fi USB Dongle
BT 610 Dual Band Wi-Fi USB Dongle
Price: £29.00

3.0 out of 5 stars OK, but....!, 22 Jan. 2015
Customer review from the Amazon Vine Programme (What's this?)
The BT 610 dongle is a small, cute looking piece of gear which will connect to an individual computer to improve its WiFi reception. While it works with any service provider, it will only serve Windows 7 or 8 operating systems and, to get the best results, you will need to have an 11ac dual band router. I find it a bit of a footer and think its use rather restrictive and limited. It's not cheap and is poor value for money.

Personally, I would advise that you save up, spend a bit more, and invest in one of BT's excellent extender systems. These will simultaneously serve you and any other member of your family or visiting guest, using either Windows, Mac or Linux operating systems, with fast and reliable WiFi in any room, even in an old, thick-walled house. They also provide the additional option of linking a laptop or desktop to your router by ethernet cable. Although dearer, they work a treat and offer great value for your money.

Consider carefully!

Tacwise 18G 50mm Brad Electric Nail Gun
Tacwise 18G 50mm Brad Electric Nail Gun
Price: £116.69

5.0 out of 5 stars Horses for courses!, 20 Jan. 2015
Customer review from the Amazon Vine Programme (What's this?)
Another professional quality item from the reliable Tacwise stable. While finish nails are used for supporting loads, brads are finer and come into their own for neat connections to finishing jobs such as window trim, among other things. This gun is easily loaded, accurate and limits damage to the end results. The nails can be purchased as galvanised or stainless steel for outdoor use. With a bit of practice, a reluctant maintenance man like myself can get great results with this item. As well as being user friendIy, it arrived in a sturdy, durable, and beautifully finished case; ideal for both storage and carriage. I consider this a great addition to my toolkit.

5.0 out of 5 stars Soothing deep heat!, 14 Jan. 2015
Customer review from the Amazon Vine Programme (What's this?)
As a daily large dog walker for the past 25 years, my legs and lower torso are relatively pain free most of the time, but, as a septuagenarian, my upper body is not exercised as frequently as it used to be and, especially in the damp Winter weather, I suffer from neck, shoulder and upper torso muscle and joint pain. I use various rubs which have a limited, beneficial effect, but, with this infrared lamp, I find the heat it radiates penetrates deeper to warm and relax my muscles and joints to provide longer lasting pain relief. My wife, who suffers from both upper and lower body muscle and joint pain, is also very impressed with the pain relief provided by this infrared lamp.

It arrived very well packaged so as to eliminate most of the dangers of likely damage during transit. Once unpacked, I found it to be in three separate parts; the base, the telescopic standing post and the lamp head. The post slipped into the base plate and secured neatly, and soundly, with a sprung button fastening. The head unit slotted easily into the post and was similarly secured with a sprung button. Job done! The post is easily expanded in two sections to meet your personal demands and secures firmly by turning the black section joints. The lamp head is fitted with a swivel joint which allows a great variety of movement, both vertically and horizontally, and, with easy height adjustment of the telescopic standing pole, it offers a huge range of positioning options. A two metre power cable, fitted with a UK 13amp plug, is attached to the lamp head. The presence of two handles on the lamp head also further ease adjustment.

The complete unit is finished to a very high standard. Indeed, it would not look out of place in any medical unit. It has been manufactured from quality materials, has a solid, durable feel and finish and is most attractive looking. It is relatively heavy, weighing approximately 24lbs, but this increases its stability and safety. While it comes with a no quibble two year guarantee, I would expect to get many more problem free years of use from it, having previous experience of Philips' products and given the brand's history for reliability and longevity. A prospective purchaser is offered the best of two worlds here; Philips innovative infrared technology and quality German construction. The makers recommend that anyone suffering from any serious disease or illness, such as heart or acute inflammatory diseases, should check the suitability of the purchase with their doctor before buying.

The following additional safety measures should be observed. Once set up, a single treatment to any one painful area using the lamp should not exceed 15 minutes. The lamp is set to automatically switch off after this time, but the user is advised to also set a separate timer as a further precaution. The most effective distance from the lamp during treatment is about 18 inches (50cm), but you can move further away if you find it too hot. You should not look directly at the lamp during operation and take care handling after use as it does warm up.

Apart from treating normal aches and pains, it could prove ideal for sports injuries and I have no hesitation in recommending this lamp as a good buy and excellent investment.

5.0 out of 5 stars LED Kindly Light!, 3 Jan. 2015
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This extremely manipulative and highly versatile little lamp offers so so many potential options that its only limitations will be those imposed by your own imagination. Looking like a larger version of my Apple Magic Mouse with an illuminated periscope, my initial, prime use will be to light my desktop computer keyboard. While it operates cheaply on mains, its brilliant rechargeable battery, once full, allows up to 12 hours of highly portable light use anywhere you want for whatever purpose you desire.

Buying at this price is a no brainer!

Humbrol Workstation/ Cutting Mat and Spitfire Bundle
Humbrol Workstation/ Cutting Mat and Spitfire Bundle
Price: £23.91

5.0 out of 5 stars Get off to a good start!, 3 Jan. 2015
Customer review from the Amazon Vine Programme (What's this?)
The urge to have a go at building a plastic kit model can strike at any age and can lead to a lifelong satisfying hobby. Old habits die hard, so it is a good idea to adopt good ones from the beginning. This great starter bundle lets you do just that. The Humbrol workstation is not a cheap floppy item, but one which offers a stiff, safe, and sound building base. It is made of good quality plastic and will prove durable. You would need a really heavy hammer to smash it up. It is well designed with a raised lip on three sides, to prevent parts falling off, and has various sized circular shaped areas formed into the moulding. These varied shapes are intended to hold, and organise, paint pots, paint brushes and modelling tools such as tweezers, scalpels, knives or files. Centrally placed is an area specifically designed to accept the cutting mat that comes with the bundle. This, too, is a quality item which works something like a live sponge. You can cut it with a knife and it will self seal. To either side of the mat space are handy sunken spaces which can be used to store the relevant model parts being worked on. While the workstation can be rested on your knee, I would advise placing it on a table or desk during use for safety reasons. Each time you stop for the day, it is also a great place to store your bits and pieces for the duration of the build and keep things tidy.

The 'Spitfire' kit that accompanies this bundle is an ideal beginner's model. A World War II icon, it is sufficiently challenging without being too intimidating. If you have never seen a kit before, it arrives with the the various parts, which have been pressed in a mould, connected by slim plastic rods. Each part is numbered and and should be checked off against a detailed plan enclosed with the kit. It is very frustrating to find that parts are missing after you have started the build. All the plastic parts arrive in a uniform shade of grey and you may wish to paint these to your taste. While the kit contains transfers (decals), you will require to buy any paints and glue to hold the kit parts together. I would recommend Revell 39604 Contacta glue for the build. You can buy it from Amazon and it is relatively inexpensive. The container holds enought to build several models. To get going, you will, however, also need a sharp knife for separating the individual parts and a small file for smoothing any excess plastic. Make sure you follow the logical sequence of construction indicated by the plan, only separating the parts as and when necessary.

Whether you might intend buying this bundle for yourself, or a younger relative or friend, you can rest assured it will lead to the development of numerous skills, including patience, and offer fun and satisfaction. It comes at a very fair price!

5.0 out of 5 stars Terrific Tacker!, 29 Dec. 2014
Customer review from the Amazon Vine Programme (What's this?)
They say it's a poor tradesman who blames his tools for poor performance, but, having the right tool for the job makes for light work and no need for excuses. Specifically made for tacking large areas quickly with minimum effort, the Tacwise Heavy Duty Hammer Tacker is a great tool for roofers and carpet fitters. Its operation is mechanical and, as no mains or battery power is necessary, it can be used virtually anywhere you can swing a hammer! While it is robust, it is no heavier than most ordinary hammers and it has the added advantage that you don't need to hold each individual tack in place as you swing. This gives you a spare hand that you can put to much better use in your tasks. Much is made of the fact that you can use the tool repetitively for long periods without strain and this, no doubt, can be a big selling point. If you are, however, like myself; a reluctant, bumbling, amateur, home maintenance man, repetitive use becomes less important, but time and effort saving are priorities. With any new tool, it pays great dividends to find out how to make proper use of it. Both by finding its strong points as well as weaknesses. No one tool can tackle every job. That's why we have toolboxes! But, with practice, it is possible to get the most out of each item and, with care and some effort, this hammer tacker can be a very accurate and useful addition to any toolbox. I have four huts which are needing their roof felting replaced and I really expect this tacker to make for lighter work.

The hammer tacker is well put together from durable materials and should take a lot of abuse. It is easy to load and operate and has a very comfortable rubberised grip. The basic operation of it is so effortless and straightforward that your Granny could easily use it. It comes with basic instructions showing how to load the staples, which are available in various sizes and come in galvanised or stainless steel versions. If you have never used a hammer tacker before, you can view some excellent videos on U-Tube which cover the the basics before having a go. The rest is up to you!

5.0 out of 5 stars This really sucks!, 23 Dec. 2014
Customer review from the Amazon Vine Programme (What's this?)
Whether it is used in its tall, elegant, slim, upright stance or in its small, round cuddly and readily portable form, this sweet shape shifter of a vacuum cleaner does what it is supposed to do with extreme ease; suck up dirt! In either form it is just as lovable and efficient. Being battery powered it also has the added advantage that there is no trailing flex to trip over. It takes approximately four hours to fully charge the battery from flat and, the makers claim, the charge will hold without use for about 18 months, thanks to the latest lithium-ion battery technology. A clear display on the side of the vac indicates the state of charge while connected to the mains or in use. Note that it will not charge in the 'ON' position. To charge, it sits in a supplied docking unit which also acts to keep it in an upright position when not in use.

In practise it is very user friendly and performs a treat. Its versatility allows its use in a variety of ways to save time and effort. I find it light, easily manoeuvrable and, with the accessories supplied, it reaches awkward spots easily. I have a large book collection, for example, and I find its dusting capabilities first class. It is also relatively quiet to operate and compares favourable with our Dyson. The great flexibility of the innovative design and unique battery power lets you use it virtually anywhere; in the house, the car, the yacht or even in your private jet. An additional bonus is that, living in a rural area with pets, subjected to relatively frequent power cuts, the battery power will let us keep the place tidy during outages which have, at times, lasted up to 4 days!

It is well finished, easily maintained and, coming from the tried and trusted Black and Decker stable, I would expect it to be durable and reliable. It is very competitively priced in a very competitive market place and, given its capabilities and versatility, and I would have no hesitation in recommending it as a good buy.

5.0 out of 5 stars Middle Aged Celebrities!, 22 Dec. 2014
Customer review from the Amazon Vine Programme (What's this?)
One of the Medieval People featured in this book, the 14th century poet, Chaucer, in his Canterbury Tales, offered us some intriguing description and insight into the lives of 24 medieval travellers on a pilgrimage in southern England.

Prestwich takes this idea further by examining some 69 individuals who lived out their lives at various times between the 9th and 15th centuries within a vast land area from Scandinavia in the north to the Mediterranean in the south and from Europe's Atlantic coasts in the west to the plains of Asia in the east as well as encroaching on the Middle East. His selection of candidates is very personal and highly subjective, but those chosen could certainly be considered celebrities of their times. The end result is a fascinating mix. We are introduced to monarchs, warriors, saints and sinners, writers and artists, among others, whose very existence not only had great influence during their lifetime, but has reverberated down to the present day. Have we learned anything from their actions and experiences? I'm not so sure. They no doubt lived in turbulent and changing times, but our own existence is still very fragile and our modern world is still a violent and dangerous place.

The period covered is divided into distinct time zones to aid the reader and each life chosen by Prestwich has been meticulously researched and is presented to us in lucid prose. Overall, it makes for very varied and interesting reading. The book is profusely illustrated throughout by contemporary art works and offers a visual feast. Most illustrations are in full colour. The 'medieval' effect is heightened by the choice of appropriate fonts which add to the pleasure of reading and browsing. As you would expect, it contains an excellent bibliography and a good index. This beautiful book is a work of art in itself and it is most apparent that a lot of tender loving care has been devoted to it from its original conception.

This printed treasure falls into the category of 'must have' for any serious collector and, while you might not need a coffee table to show it off to its best, you will certainly require quite a deep bookshelf.

5.0 out of 5 stars Functional workout aid!, 11 Dec. 2014
Customer review from the Amazon Vine Programme (What's this?)
Very comfortable armband which will securely hold your iPhone 6 while you take exercise. I found I had to remove my Apple case to obtain a relatively tight fit and, doing so, this let me fit and use headphones with no difficulty whatsoever. The tightness of the fit gave me confidence that my iPhone was well protected against slipping free or damage. The phone is completely covered yet can be easily operated and viewed in situ. Slide on is easy and selecting an appropriate App offers no problem. All other controls function well and the only feature you cannot use is the camera! The armband offers good sweat protection and is hand washable, both necessary features after a good workout! The use of feel good padding, quality Velcro fastening and excellent finishing make for a durable, reliable, and value for money product. I am suitably impressed!
