Gordon Ramsay's Great Escape - India [DVD]
Gordon Ramsay's Great Escape - India [DVD]
Dvd ~ Martha Delap
Price: £12.93

4.0 out of 5 stars Interesting and quite funny, 10 July 2011
In terms of the food available across India, the DVD did not really tell me anything new. It was interesting to see Gordon's views on real Indian food - which is far better than that across the UK.

The one part of the series that I did not like was Gordon's lack of integration. He did not seem to make any effort to adjust to the Indian way of things - particularly his manners. Had he not done any research on the culture of India before he left the UK? I'm sure I even saw him eating with his left hand...

Ghajini [DVD] [2008]
Ghajini [DVD] [2008]
Dvd ~ Aamir Khan

5.0 out of 5 stars Probably the best Bollywood film in the last ten years, 3 Jun. 2011
This review is from: Ghajini [DVD] [2008] (DVD)
Although known as an Amir Khan vehicle, the one thing about Ghajini that disappoints is Amir Khan's performance. It is way too over the top, and we often see him angry when he gurns for the camera.

That said, although a remake of Memento, Ghajini is a nice film with a strong - and long - story.

Jiah Khan is also in the film in a support role and is as gorgeous as ever, her acting is a little week but she has improved since this film was released.

I would recommend this to anyone who wants to see a well made Bollywood film.

3.0 out of 5 stars Meanders along, 2 Jun. 2011
This review is from: Aakrosh DVD [2010] (DVD)
I have to give the makers of Aakrosh credit for tackling a very difficult subject - honour killings.

As for the movie, it is a bit of a copy of Mississippi Burning and even lifts some scenes directly.

Why Bollywood film makers insist on copying ideas shot for shot, I will never understand and this is something that affects the film. If the film makers would only be original rather than copying the Bourne films (and others) then maybe this film and others would be more original and more entertaining.

3.0 out of 5 stars Not too bad, 1 Jun. 2011
Quite an interesting premise, with an Indian family coming to terms with a loss during the days following September the 11th.

The direction is not too bad, but Tanuja Chandra really needs to get more from her ctors.

The performance by Mahima Chaudhary is very weak, and the acting never rises above the level of a soap opera. Despite this, the story is good enough to entertain for an hour or two.

4.0 out of 5 stars Sanjay's charm lifts this to above average, 30 May 2011
This review is from: Munnabhai MBBS [DVD] [2003] (DVD)
The origins of this film are immediately recognisable as being close to those in Patch Adams - the Robin Williams comedy. To be honest, I think this film is a vast improvement on its source material.

Sanjay Dutt is at his charismatic best, and is often very funny. The musical numbers are also a great deal of fun, particularly Mumait Khan's star turn in a great item number.

Huge fun, and hugely touching - add this to your DVD collection as soon as you can.

5.0 out of 5 stars Improves with viewings, 30 May 2011
This review is from: Jab We Met [DVD] (DVD)
I've lost track of how many times I've seen this. If you want an example of when Bollywood got it right, then this is the film for you. Great musical numbers, an excellent use of India's majestic scenery and as others have said - great, no amazing, chemistry between the two lead actors. I don't think Kareena Kapoor has ever been better, and most of her roles have lived in the shadow of this little movie.

I almost wish they'd make a sequel.

1.0 out of 5 stars Great, if you like terrible films, 28 May 2011
This review is from: Kambakkht Ishq [DVD] [2009] (DVD)
I bought the film on the strength of the reviews on this page, but perhaps those people saw a different film. This film is a real mess, and left me feeling embarrassed. Kareena and Akshay have no real chemistry, and at times it feels that all Akshay can do now is far out and ridiculous comedy. He seems to have had more box offices bombs than anyone in recent years.

The film is childish and the performances are absolutely dreadful. Denise Richards, and the other western stars seem to have been given no direction, and if grinning at the camera is acceptable to the director, Sabbir Khan, then perhaps its time he found another profession. This film is nothing short of embarrassing.

The Playback Queen: The Very Best Of
The Playback Queen: The Very Best Of

5.0 out of 5 stars Music from the golden age, 23 May 2011
I have to agree with the previous review, this collection is an excellent introduction to Asha's music.

Each track plays in excellent quality and is spellbinding.

If you buy this collection, make sure you catch a collection of videos from Asha's Bollywood days - you'll get stunning vivid colours to go with the beauty of her music.

Indian Films Dvd | Lamhaa
Indian Films Dvd | Lamhaa
Dvd ~ Sanjay Dutt
Price: £12.99

4.0 out of 5 stars Better than I expected, 23 May 2011
This review is from: Indian Films Dvd | Lamhaa (DVD)
Although it lifts scenes directly from the hurt locker, and one or two of the Jason Bourne films, there is a lot more to Lamhaa than you might think.

In fact, one of the film's weaknesses is that it strives to imitate where it should really innovate. The shaky handheld camera work is akin to the Bourne films but doesn't really suit the strong dramatic story of Lamhaa.

Having said that, the film is interesting, historical and also genuinely exciting.

I was delighted by Bipasha Basu's performance in the film, she is more than capable of shouldering a more serious role than in her previous film roles, and Sanjay Dutt plays his role with the usual charisma and self assured confidence that we have become used to.

This is a great little movie and I recommend it to anyone who also wants to take in the beautiful scenery of Kashmir.

5.0 out of 5 stars Even better than the Sopranos, 21 May 2011
Dry wit, tough office politics, bad behaviour towards women, mix in a dash of cynicism for good measure and you've got the best television series ever seen.

Some episodes are so busy, it seems a miracle that that plots come together. In other episodes, nothing much happens. But what makes mad men so effective is the acting, pace and quality of the dialogue.

I don't want to tell you anything more about it, for fear of revealing too much.

You may think this is an over hyped series, but not until you sit down to watch it.
