4.0 out of 5 stars What's in the box?, 10 Oct 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
The package I received was a standard plastic DVD case containing:

- A DVD with installation files, documentation in a selection of languages, some virus definition files, and a web-page which describes the options and from which you can launch the installer. (There is also an autorun file on the DVD, if your computer is configured to use it).

- A leaflet with a "sales number" which you must convert into a licence key by visiting the AVG website.

- An advertising leaflet which offers AVG anti-virus pro for Android one year free trial.

Once installed, the virus scanner visits the AVG website to obtain the latest virus definitions and, occasionally, software updates which keep the virus scanning engine up to date.

I haven't installed yet, so I can't comment on how easy it was to get up and running - I'll come back and update this review once I have done so.

Q-Connect KF01413 Airmail Envelope Printed 70gsm DL (Pack of 500)
Q-Connect KF01413 Airmail Envelope Printed 70gsm DL (Pack of 500)
Price: 14.60

4.0 out of 5 stars 4.8 grams per envelope, 10 July 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
As stated in the description, these envelopes are made from fairly ordinary 70 gsm copier paper, rather than the thinner and smoother paper that airmail envelopes were traditionally made from. Consequently they are, at 4.8 grams, about 1 gram heavier than traditional airmail envelopes. According to my scales, one A4 sheet of 80 gsm paper in one of these envelopes and a stamp just exactly hits the 10 gram price break for Royal Mail airmail with no contingency for measurement error. It's probably best to use a lighter weight of writing paper to gain a little bit of weight margin, just in case the Royal Mail are feeling particularly picky on the day they weigh your letter.

Also as stated in the description, the envelopes I received are gummed. This should give them a longer shelf life than self adhesive envelopes (which, in my experience, lose their sticking performance after four or five years in storage).

4.0 out of 5 stars Information for Windows XP users, 26 July 2012
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
The WD20EARX is an advanced format disk, meaning that it has 4096 byte sectors. Windows XP uses 512 byte sectors, so the disk must operate in 512 byte emulation mode. A disk partition created by Windows XP does not align correctly with the 4096 byte sectors - it is misaligned by 512 bytes. Disk accesses still work in this situation, but internally the disk must do a lot of read-modify-write activity, which slows down the data transfer rate.

Fortunately this disk has a rather neat Windows XP jumper which, when fitted, causes the disk to move its sector boundaries by 512 bytes so that a Windows XP partition is correctly aligned. Now the data transfers happen at the proper speed.

Technical information on the Western Digital website explains how to fit the necessary jumper link.

4.0 out of 5 stars Power supply specifications, 12 Jun 2012
Although there is plenty of information about the EA-380D Green on Antec's website (...), I thought it might be helpful to list the main specifications here.

The power supply unit I received has the following outputs:

One 24 pin main motherboard connector. The wires leading to this connector were 500 millimetres long. The 24 pin connector can be cut down to 20 pins if your motherboard only has a 20 pin socket, leaving a four wire separate piece which presumably does not get connected to anything.

Two 4 pin 12 volt motherboard connectors. The wires leading to these connectors were 500 millimetres long.

One 6 pin PCI card 12 volt power connector. The wires leading to this connector were 500 millimetres long.

One SATA power cable with three SATA power connectors, at 500 millimetres, 650 millimetres, and 800 millimetres.

One legacy power cable with three four pin Molex connectors, at 500 millimetres, 650 millimetres, and 800 millimetres, plus a legacy 3.5 inch floppy power connector at 990 millimetres.

One mixed power cable with SATA power at 500 millimetres, SATA power at 650 millimetres, and 4 pin Molex at 790 millimetres.

It appears that the SATA power connectors have all three voltages (12 volts, 5 volts and 3.3 volts) supplied to them.

The output ratings are:

+3.3 volts - 20 amps (current limit at 29 amps)
+5.0 volts - 20 amps (current limit at 35 amps)

maximum continuous power from +3.3 and +5.0 volt outputs added together is 115 watts.

+12 volts output 1 - 17 amps (current limit at 25 amps)
+12 volts output 2 - 15 amps (current limit at 25 amps)

maximum continuous power from the two +12 volt outputs added together is 336 watts.

-12 volts - 0.8 amps
+5 volts standby - 2.5 amps

maximum continuous power from all outputs added together is 380 watts.

Input is 100 to 240 volts AC 47 to 63 Hz

4.0 out of 5 stars Power supply specifications, 11 Jun 2012
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
There appears to be some ambiguity about the power supply capacity - the product description gives it as 120 watts but the product specifications give it as 100 watts. So, this is what I actually received...

The power supply unit was marked with the model number HEC-120SA-7FX. It has these output connectors:

One twenty pin ATX motherboard main power connector.
One four pin ATX motherboard 12 volt power connector.
One SATA power connector, but with only 12 volts and 5 volts wired up.
Two legacy Molex four pin disk drive power connectors.
One legacy four pin 3.5 inch floppy disk drive power connector.

Note that the SATA power connector and the first of the Molex power connectors are only 50 millimetres apart on the wires. This shouldn't be a problem for most system configurations, but if you're packing your box full of stuff you might finish up having to use an extender cable.

The the label on the power supply unit gives these current ratings:

3.3 volts - 10 amps
5.0 volts - 10 amps

(maximum power available from 3.3 volts and 5 volts added together is 50 watts)

+12 volts - 9.5 amps
-12 volts - 0.3 amp
5 volts standby - 2 amps

(maximum total power from all outputs added together is 120 watts)

Input 100 - 240 volts AC 50 - 60 Hz 2 amps

5.0 out of 5 stars Works OK in Compaq Presario SR1329UK, 19 Mar 2012
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
I fitted two of these memory modules to a Compaq Presario SR1329UK (which has an Athlon 64 3400+ 2.4GHz CPU) and they work OK even though the Crucial website recommends a different part number. Note, however, that this machine reserves 128MB for internal use so the operating system could not use the whole of the 2GB of installed memory.

5.0 out of 5 stars Password protection utility included, 14 Feb 2012
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
Although the product description (and also the description on the back of the cardboard blister pack) make no mention of it, the 32GB Trans-IT USB memory stick I received has the same password protection capability as the smaller Trans-IT memory sticks. A password program (for Windows/Intel X86) and a user guide are supplied on the stick. Caution - be sure to save a copy of the user guide on your hard disk before using the password utility, because it reformats the USB stick and puts back only the password utility program. The user guide is not restored after the reformat.

3.0 out of 5 stars Be careful with the power supply brick, 10 Aug 2011
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
There's no problem when you use the included power supply with this hard disk enclosure, but please be aware that the plug which feeds power into the back of the enclosure is not wired up the same way as it was for some of the earlier Sumvision enclosures for PATA hard disks. If you already own one of these older enclosures, be sure not to mix up its power supply brick with the one from this SATA enclosure or else you might blow up your hard disk.

This SATA enclosure is a very neatly designed unit. However, when I investigated the internals I discovered that the rear panel power switch only disconnects the 5V power rail. The 12V rail remains on all the time. That's a bit cheap - who knows how the hard disk is going to react? I think I will leave the switch on all the time and turn the unit off at the mains power socket instead.

The bridge chip is JMicron JM20329 (which claims to be Advanced Format aware).

4.0 out of 5 stars My one works OK, 28 July 2011
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This review is from: Shake Powered Torch
I think there must be more than one version of this torch being sold. The one I received (from Paragon Supplies Limited) was Duratool part number D00001. It is a genuine attempt at a rechargable torch which includes a 40mAh three cell NiMH battery, a bridge rectifier, a coil, and a (very strong) magnet. A white LED draws power from the battery via a one ohm resistor and a push-on push-off switch.

By contrast I also bought another, very similar looking, torch from a supermarket. It has two CR2032 lithium cells instead of the rechargable battery. These lithium cells are not really meant to be recharged, and once they went flat the performance of the torch was very poor.

So what do I think of this genuinely rechargable torch? Well, the light it gives is not super bright, but it is enough to see your way out to the rubbish bin when it is dark, or to read the electricity meter. It's too early to say how much long it stays alight for with 45 seconds of shaking, but some quick calculations suggest that if you were to shake it for long enough to fully charge the battery the light would stay on for about an hour. The standard of assembly was not as good as it could have been, but it works and has not fallen apart so far.

I must confess that shaking the torch is not the most natural action I have come across. My limit is about two minutes of vigourous shaking, after which I need to take a break or reduce to some rather half-hearted shaking which probably does not contribute very much.

I should repeat that the magnet is very strong, and its field extends outside the plastic body of the torch. If you have cassette tapes, a mechanical watch, floppy disks, or anything else which does not like magnetic fields, you should be sure to keep the torch away from them.
