Nicely performed in period style.

As a taster for the range and scope of Vivaldi many concertos this is a good choice.

have given away all my old 'non-period' Vivaldi concertos in favour of this.

2.0 out of 5 stars Not the best history writing ..., 19 Oct 2013

Rather light on original thought ... more received polemic and opinion than original history research ... the earlier periods are rather too reliant on secondary sources ... it is not even justifiable as a coffee table tome, which is disappointing, since I hear the restated exhibition was appealing..

This is a very nice looking piece of kit, and works seamlessly with my home wifi to store the data in my 'Withings' personal account, which I can access via an App on the iPad. Printing-out the data for my GP in a formal format is useful, and the graphs and charts are a great help.

5.0 out of 5 stars Seductive and stylish ..., 31 Mar 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This review is from: Handel: Esther (Audio CD)
I bought this CD on the strength of John Butt's other 'period' Handel-at-Canons recording, Acis and Galatea, which I thoroughly enjoyed.

This 'period' recording too is very satisfying. Professor Butt's scholarly awareness in recreating the original resources means he has chosen his musicians with care. The performance is supremely stylish, and colourful not least in the triumphant brass and elegant woodwind playing.

Also triumphant and elegant in equal measure is the stylish singing by soloists and chorus; every word is crystal clear, every musical phrase well-drawn.

The programme notes present in most readable fashion the fascinating back-story of Handel's time at Canons with the Earl of Carnarvon (later Duke of Chandos) and the work's early history.

This is all very nicely done.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fascinating ..., 29 Mar 2013

With the ongoing (2013) steady contraction of the University of London in favour of the increasing independence of its constituent colleges this book reminds us of the tremendous energy and enthusiasm there was for this university from its establishment in the 1830s to more recent times. The Senate House Library remains not only a London treasure but a national treasure, and this well-conceived volume tells why. It comprises a substantial series of short scholarly sketches by expert writers for each of the many objects so nicely reproduced here; the variety of authorial style make this every bit a 'page turner' as do the images of the lovely objects themselves.

After years of being sold unknown-brand starters from my local electronics store, which disintegrate within a year, I thought I would try these. So far so good ... and very prompt delivery.

3.0 out of 5 stars Leaves me unmoved ..., 29 Mar 2013

This review is from: Bach: Mass In B Minor (Audio CD)
I have previously bought this group's Acis and Galatea and loved it. However, despite the first-rate production and excellent singing and playing by all concerned here - under Butt's undoubtedly talented direction - the performance ultimately leaves me unmoved. For me, the argument for performing this masterwork with one voice to a part is not made by this recording.

Fantastic Voyage
Fantastic Voyage

5.0 out of 5 stars Beautiful and haunting, 29 Mar 2013

This review is from: Fantastic Voyage (Audio CD)
I recently (2013) saw this film during one of the regular sci-fi film nights at the UCL Grant Museum in London (UK). I was soon totally overtaken by the music ... not least because it is a long time coming.

"The composer deliberately wrote no music for the first four reels of the film, before the protagonists enter the human body. Rosenman wrote that 'the harmony for the entire score is almost completely atonal except for the very end when our heroes grow to normality' ". [Wikipedia quote]

This is a fully composed orchestral score (no electronic short-cuts here) ... time and again evoking Schoenberg's 12-tone (serial atonalism) techniques, and those of other early c20 western modernists. It is a massive piece of work. I have since discovered the score to be the work of New York composer Leonard Rosenman (1924-2008), and it was no surprise to find he was pupil not only of Schoenberg, but also of other c20 musical pioneers Dalapicola and Sessions.

The score for Fantastic Voyage is notable not only for its large orchestral forces and the huge range of orchestral colours drawn out by Rosenman, but for its uncompromising atonal serialism, perhaps unique in film scores up to that point. Unsurprisingly, for many listeners the score is cold and unrelentingly sterile, but such critics would no doubt think this true of so many c20 musical modernists and their disciples.

Rosenman's highly structured compositional techniques produce a soundscape that feels not out of place today - so ubiquitous has that serial atonal sound world become in accompanying such suspenseful visual media - indeed these days a pastiche might be thrown together in no time at all by a talented undergraduate composition student with a laptop. But for Rosenman every note and colour combination had to be not only imagined in silence (no ready sound samples for him) but also set down on paper by hand before the whole could be brought to life by a symphony orchestra of (I guess) 80 or so musicians; the real effect unknown until finally performed.

While nowadays the film itself can be seen as dated (and perhaps even risible) the score is seriously compelling; beautiful and haunting. Well worth listening to.

I have become quite a fan of this instrumental ensemble ... its recordings of Mudge and of Telemann are well worth discovery ... but on this occasion ... oh dear ... the panache and brio of the playing simply outclasses the soloist who appears two-dimensional and constrained by comparison; no Scholl or Mehta he. I suggest you find and listen to samples of this before venturing further.
