You Say Potato: A Book About Accents
You Say Potato: A Book About Accents

2.0 out of 5 stars Far too superficial, 14 Nov. 2014
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
I was disappointed by this book. I expected more depth from an author with the track record of David Crystal. It is in truth superficial in the extreme. Yes, I already know there are different accents in different parts of the country and world and that they have changed over time and I know in broad outlines what they sound like. I was looking for more than this padded out statement of the obvious - I wanted some insight and analysis, but sadly this was not forthcoming. A missed opportunity indeed.

Giants of Steam: The Great Men and Machines of Rail's Golden Age
Giants of Steam: The Great Men and Machines of Rail's Golden Age
by Jonathan Glancey
Edition: Paperback
Price: £9.98

4.0 out of 5 stars A great book for steam buffs, 28 April 2014
This is a good comprehensive survey of steam locomotive design and development over the last 100 years. I doubt it will appeal to the general reader - it is too specialised for that - and the descriptions of the different locomotive classes covered can become rather repetitive and overwhelming. At times it is difficult to see the wood for the trees. Nevertheless, it is good to have plenty of coverage of developments in countries other than Britain.

While the author is not afraid to make judgements as to the merits or otherwise of different locomotives and their design features, it would have been useful to have had some sort of summary towards the end of the book setting out what he considers to be the optimal design features for a brand new steam locomotive (should one ever be built nowadays) in the light of the findings he presents. The book takes the form of a historical survey rather than specifically being a guide to best practice in steam locomotive design, although much can be gleaned from its pages along the way.

The decision by railway companies around the world to dieselise and end of steam locomotive production in the decades following the Second world War means that the building of steam locomotives incorporating new design improvements came to a halt. The book does leave one hoping that a new locomotive incorporating all the design advances developed since then could be built somehow. All it would seem to need is a suitable philanthropist with £10m to spare!

If you are already interested in steam locomotives I have no hesitation in recommending this book.

4.0 out of 5 stars Too much talking, 3 Jan. 2014
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
The music is fine on this double CD. Early Beatles sounding quite raw and rough in places. Some reviews have marked the CD down because in their eyes the performances are unpolished and not up to the standard of artists appearing on today's X Factor. This misses the whole point. When the Beatles burst on the scene, part of their attraction was just that they and their 'beat' music was a bit unpolished, certainly in comparison to most of the crooning that was the mainstay of the radio at that time.

I only give 4 stars because too much of the CD is taken up with talking - I would have much preferred less chat and more music.

1.0 out of 5 stars Light flashes when it is time to switch off, 29 Dec. 2013
I fitted my light a while ago. It soon developed a fault whereby it flashes on and off for about a minute before switching off. No mention of this problem in the manual. I have had complaints from neighbours. Totally useless.

The Disappearance of God: A Divine Mystery
The Disappearance of God: A Divine Mystery
by Richard Elliott Friedman
Edition: Hardcover
Price: £19.81

4.0 out of 5 stars Thought provoking, 20 Jun. 2013
In my opinion the strongest part of this book is the first part which makes a strong (and scholarly) case that God gradually withdraws from contact with humanity as the books of the Old Testament follow one another. The author is keen to state that his argument can be accepted by atheist and believer alike. This is certainly true of this first part of the book. However when the author gets on to more recent developments (and he is fairly selective in what he choses to discuss - see the other reviews on this site for details) I got a growing feeling that, for all his protestations to the contrary, ultimately the author believes in some sort of deity and this assumption underpins much of his concluding discussions.

Perhaps as an American (where church membership is much higher than in Europe) he does not feel so keenly the secularisation of our age, but I would have expected a discussion of the disappearance of God to include a reflection on the situation we have now (at least in much of Europe) where God has in some sense disappeared from our current society. (I know this is a broad generalisation, but you get my drift.)

I was also struck that the book is written very much from a perspective of being written firmly within the Jewish/Christian/Western tradition. While the last part of the book seeks to draw conclusions applicable to all mankind, I'm not sure what someone who had grown up in a Hindu or Buddhist society (or even an Islamic one) would make of the prescription offered.

Nevertheless this is a thought provoking and interesting book worthy of 4 stars.

Der Rhein - The Rhine: Von der Quelle bis zur Mündung - From the river head to the mouth
Der Rhein - The Rhine: Von der Quelle bis zur Mündung - From the river head to the mouth
by Inga Menkhoff
Edition: Hardcover

3.0 out of 5 stars A Pleasant Picture Book, 11 Mar. 2012
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This is essentially a compilation of pictures of scenes along the Rhine with an accompanying text. The pictures are quite reasonable and printed on glossy paper in full colour. For the price not bad value.

The text is in both English and German and the English text is very obviously a translation of the German. It is extremely stilted and has obviously not been written by a native English speaker, which does rather minimise any pleasure to be obtained from reading this book. Therefore only three stars.

4.0 out of 5 stars Excellent guide to the Danube, 21 Feb. 2012
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
I purchased this book to read before setting off on a trip down the Danube later this year. It is an excellent guide to the history and character of the places along the Danube, written in an easy to read style and with just the right amount of detail for my tastes. I would certainly recommend it to others requiring a readable guide to the Danube.

I only give it 4 stars however because of the illustrations. There are plenty of photographs spread throughout the text. However, with hardly any exceptions they have no captions, so one is left having to guess what they depict (usually an informed guess can be made by reading the adjacent paragraphs). Also they are all in black and white and printed on non-glossy paper, so their quality is not great. The book does contain a number of clear and helpful maps however.

I only wish there was a similar book about the Rhine and Main.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent, 13 Jan. 2012
I just purchased this trimmer after trying to decide which one to buy. Another reviewer recommended Dahle and when I found I could get one for significantly less than the Amazon price by doing a Google search I took the plunge. I have no regrets - it does the job perfectly. It cuts cleanly (including card) and the clamping mechanism works automatically. It also seems sturdy and well made.

Humax HDR-FOX T2 Freeview+ HD Twin Tuner with 1TB Recorder

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent results, 29 Nov. 2011
I have had my Humax HDR for about two months now and it's working faultlessly with excellent picture quality. The 'record a series' feature works a treat. I haven't had the chance to try the HD capability yet as HD freeview in my area doesn't go live until next spring.
