Norfolk Broads: The Biography
Norfolk Broads: The Biography
by Pete Goodrum
Edition: Paperback
Price: £14.88

3.0 out of 5 stars Could do better., 12 Oct. 2014

The premise of the book, a chronological life story of the Broads, is good, and there is lots of useful and interesting information gathered from a variety of sources. There are some factual errors and some oversimplifications, but generally it is a well informed and interesting work. The biggest problem is that the author has a poor writing style, his prose is difficult to follow at times, he leaps about rather randomly from point to point - points that do not naturally seem to follow on from each other - and overall the impression is of a clumsy amateur rather than a skilled wordsmith. With sympathetic editing this could have been a much better book. Not bad though.

Ella in fine voice and though the song is many years old it is so pertinent for our times. The allegorical story of the mythical land of Oz, so bespoilt by the devastation brought by the wicked witch, and the joyous celebrations when the news emerges of her death. Of course her offspring try to suggest she was a saint - but we the people know better. Would be great to see this song soaring up the charts at this auspicious time.

3.0 out of 5 stars Buy the Ella Fitzgerald version instead., 9 April 2013
We need to focus ourselves on just one version if we're going to get this song to number 1 this week. Total sales of the song are shooting up, but we're dissipating the effect across the different takes.

This review is from: Not Ready Yet! (Paperback)
I had the privilege of hearing the author read this book to an audience of about 40 children in a public library. The children listened avidly, and kept inching forward to get a better view of the rich illustrations - indeed several reached out to try to touch the pages, so enticing were they. A lovely and engaging book, perfectly designed for its intended audience.
