Sometimes there are unsung heroes we need to know about. People who do things for the right reasons and remain understated. Hanns is such a person and this well written book is well worth reading.

I enjoyed all three books. Light and easy reading with quite a few rather funny moments. I will read the next one too.

A good read written by a brave but understated man who did his duty and did it well. He deals well with both the physical and emotional aspects of being a Marine and fighting in a war. A steal at the price and better than many other books on the subject.

Well documented and easy to read. A good balance between the story and the military facts. Out of the many historical accounts I have read, this is amongst the best and for the price, well worth enjoying.

5.0 out of 5 stars Very enjoyable - don't miss this book!, 28 May 2013

If you experienced the helpless bitterness of being a conscript, marvelled at the fact that anyone would voluntarily join the SADF permanent force, wondered if you were the only one who was cynical about living in (and recognised it as) a dysfunctional society, but nevertheless retained your sense of humour, read this book. It will bring back memories, some good, some unpleasant, some of Hillbrow (remember?), with a few very good laughs thrown in.

Anyone wanting a different perspective of what it was like to live in South Africa during the late 80s and have to do national service will also find this a very interesting read - it touches on race, religion, culture, language - broadly, everything you would expect from a well written engaging book.

I seldom recommend books because people have such diverse tastes, but this book is the exception.
