Very enjoyable - don't miss this book!, 28 May 2013
If you experienced the helpless bitterness of being a conscript, marvelled at the fact that anyone would voluntarily join the SADF permanent force, wondered if you were the only one who was cynical about living in (and recognised it as) a dysfunctional society, but nevertheless retained your sense of humour, read this book. It will bring back memories, some good, some unpleasant, some of Hillbrow (remember?), with a few very good laughs thrown in.
Anyone wanting a different perspective of what it was like to live in South Africa during the late 80s and have to do national service will also find this a very interesting read - it touches on race, religion, culture, language - broadly, everything you would expect from a well written engaging book.
I seldom recommend books because people have such diverse tastes, but this book is the exception.
