5.0 out of 5 stars Marvellous Work Of Reference, 28 Jun. 2013

As with his other books Hugh Longworth has delivered the goods again. Although primarily a reference book it is a must for any self respecting railway enthusiast and is well laid out and easy to use. Highly reccommended.

2.0 out of 5 stars Could Have Been Much Better, 6 Jun. 2013

This review is from: Dominion (Kindle Edition)
The premise of this book is excellent with a highly plausible historical scenario and decent characters. Where it falls down (and badly in my opinion) is the ending. I won't spoil it for any prospective readers but it is weak and ill concieved. Also in the historical notes and the end of the books whilst explaining how he came to his version of events he goes off into a rant against the Scottish National Party. Whilst I have no views either way on the SNP and its activities I found this tirade of abuse most uncalled for and totally out of place. I won't be reading any of his other works. POOR.

5.0 out of 5 stars Disturbing But Compulsive, 6 Jun. 2013

Simply the best book I've ever read. The subject matter may be disturbing but I would urge anyone with a passing interest to read this book. I believe this to be the definative work on the subject.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Rivetting Read, 30 Aug. 2010

If you've never read any of Lyn Macdonalds books I urge you to do so. Her books not only convey the historical side of events but also the personal view of the men involved. In this latter aspect I believe she has no equal, she conveys the horror and the humour with equal sensitivity and the futility of war and especially this one shines through. Highly recommended.

4.0 out of 5 stars A Book Of Its Time, 11 Mar. 2010
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
A book very much of its time but none the less interesting for that. It gives a VERY concise route review of the then Southern Region of British Rail in the mid 1980's. A very useful guide for railway modellers of said period or for people who prefer their railways when corporoate blue and grey ruled.
