I remember this on the original TV transmission in 1980, and I was pleasantly surprised as to how well this stands the test of time. I have watched the whole thing twice since purchase, but I will be watching this again on an annual basis. The Professor can explain the likelihood of other intelligent life in the Universe better than Professor Cox with only a piece of paper (that said Professor Cox is a fan of Professor Sagan, and he does have the benefit of CGI), but I got lost twice on his explaination of DNA on the biology section. Historical re-constructions look convincing. I did find reading the relevant chapter in his book AFTER watching the episode did help me to remember things better (just a suggestion, but that could be just me!). A broad canvas filled with knowledge and interest, updated by Professor Sagan in 1990. However, would benefit from a "Cosmos update" by somebody equally talented (Professor Cox?) for a re-issue in the future.

3.0 out of 5 stars but not a waste of money either, 1 Dec 2014
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
I only really bought this for one track, but the majority of the songs are worthy of a listen or three. It was also interesting to hear other items from that particular group. I caught myself humming one of the "other tunes" on the CD so that at least had "ear worm" qualities. Not an essential purchase, but not a waste of money either. You have to tune your ears to the culture of the period, and forget about the intervening years of music.

This review is from: From Scotland With Love (Audio CD)
Music with a mixture of positive attitute and sadness at the same time, perhaps that's what it means to be a Scot? (I'm only English, but nobody's perfect). Interesting tunes, and the lyrics go in interesting directions. Having got hooked on these songs from watching the film of the same name, you get a little shock not having the visuals too, but this wears off.

This was a replacement for my wife's laptop battery which seemed to be on its way out. So far so good. I wasn't keen on the instructions translated directly from the Chinese, but they could be followed.

We asked a handy friend to change the original boot struts, and he did. One strut needed a bit of work on it to get it "fit for purpose", so it lost a star. They work very well now.

4.0 out of 5 stars An Introduction to (mostly European) History from earliest times, 19 Mar 2014

The style of writing is most definately "Marmite", you will either love it or loath it. It is like a story being read to you by your Grandfather, which is pleasant and a little patronizing at the same time. That said, the ease of reading means that you absorb information without having to work at all. Of course, this is a book designed for "small adults" rather than an Oxbridge Professor writing for his students. What I particularly liked is that a piece of information will just stop you in your tracks with an internal "well I never knew that" to yourself, even if you have read shelves of history books before (as I have). This is a particularly good introduction to history for those who have never encountered it before. I would have given it five stars but I LOATHE the Deckled Edge which just looks messy.

Exploding the Myths of Modern Architecture

4.0 out of 5 stars Tells it like it is., 3 Dec 2013

I am not a hater of all things modern, but this is a critique of how some buildings failed to be "fit for purpose". The Sydney Opera House is an Opera House where you cannot stage a large opera due to the fact that the building is unsuitable. The form of the building came into being just because the architect thought it would be interesting to build this building in a particular and new way, which presented terrible practical problems and then failed to be delivered on time or indeed budget. To take a more domestic example, flat roofs (yes, I now they are not really flat, they have a slight tilt) are not a good idea due to the fact the water "ponds" and then finds a way into the building. (I know, my neighbour has one), but were a hallmark of the modernist house.

4.0 out of 5 stars Don and Phil sing sweetly, 18 Nov 2013

A very good compliation from Time Life Music with 24 great songs from the Everly Brothers. The sound quality is generally great with tape hiss only audible on one track. Nice second-hand copy from the vendor with some scratches only on the case itself. (I will change the case!)
