The Remains of the Day
The Remains of the Day
Price: £4.79

4.0 out of 5 stars Beatifully written, engaging, mildly amusing (although you have to have a certain sense of humour), not great valuefor money., 24 Nov. 2014

This is a combination of Jeeves (P.G.Wodehouse) and In Search of England (H.V.Morton). I don't think it is as successful as either although to win the Booker is no mean feat. The humour is a lot drier than Wodehouse and the description of England a good deal skimpier than Morton. Where it scores is the intimate description of the role of the Butler in a grand house and his relationship with the other "below stairs" staff plus the inevitable decline in the role of full-time servants following the 1st World War. Some of the imagined conferences that took place are interesting but, although based on historical fact, do not really add much to anyone who knows just a little history.

There is a theme going through the book of the philosophy of what it takes to be a Great Butler. Stevens, the central character, clearly fails in this by his own standards and, although he imagines that he was nearly Great in his heyday he sadly ends up by denying his former employer and admitting his errors.

Entwined through the book is a motoring journey that he takes in search of an old colleague for whom he clearly has romantic feelings, I will not tell you the outcome!

Nowhere Safe (September Rafferty Book 3)
Nowhere Safe (September Rafferty Book 3)
Price: £2.29

3.0 out of 5 stars It's OK but not a patch on Nowhere to Run., 19 Nov. 2014

It's not nearly as good as book one. I presume Ms Bush has to style it as a standalone novel and therefore repeat an awful lot from the previous books. It's good but I regret buying it whereas the first in the series was really good.

5.0 out of 5 stars Seriously recommend this detective novel, 14 Nov. 2014

I don't normally read series of books as I don't want to be automatically enticed into reading the next one (which is inevitably more expensive than the first). But this is so good, with a number of twists as the murder suspect changes that I have to read the next one!

Amazon Kindle Paperwhite Leather Cover, Ink Blue
Amazon Kindle Paperwhite Leather Cover, Ink Blue
Price: £29.99

4.0 out of 5 stars Probably the best there is but not absolutely perfect., 13 Nov. 2014
I can't complain too much, it has lasted me nearly 20 months and I love the texture and the self sleep feature. Considering I read more than a book a week it has been a great companion. However, there are plastic inserts on the corners near the hinge side and these have fallen out, both top and bottom. This doesn't impair its performance but it doesn't look so good. Also, I think the leather hinge will go soon and lastly, despite the tight fit of the case, dust collects between the case and the Paperwhite which is annoying rather than anything else, it has to be dug out with a toothpick. And, as I can't get the case off easily it won't fit into a waterproof cover but so far I have not dropped it in the bath / pool.

4.0 out of 5 stars Value for money but not the greatest pair of gloves you will ever own!, 13 Nov. 2014
I can't be too picky as this is my second pair. Yes, they keep your hands warm but they bobble and fray at the finger ends which then need to have the threads cut off so the quality is not high. On the flip side you can type with them on and they go in the washing machine.
