Pink!
Pink!
by Lynne Rickards
Edition: Paperback
Price: £5.63

5.0 out of 5 stars Fantastic book for boys, 1 July 2014
This review is from: Pink! (Paperback)
One day in Linlithgow, after a walk around the palace and a good lunch (haggis and cheese panini!) we ended up in a bookshop, and down in the basement, in the children's section, we found author Lynne Rickards sitting and waiting to do a book reading! Since it was just us there, she very kindly offered to read this book to our 3-year old. It was an excellent reading - but then it is an excellent book, about a young penguin boy who one day awakes to find that he is a non-standard colour for Spheniscidae. He loved it then and - when we came home - demanded it again for a bedtime story. Highly recommended.

Warning - if, like me, you live thousands of miles from Britain, be prepared for some frustration as this book will make you want to jump in the car and go looking for evidence and the remains of the Romans in Britain. Highly recommended.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fantastic, 2 April 2014

A gripping review of Royal Navy submarine operations (focused on the Hunter Killers, but covering SSBN operations as well) from the 50s to the end of the Cold War. With a comprehensive epilogue and telling many stories that needed to be told (many only rumours until now) this is an essential text for all interested in this topic.

5.0 out of 5 stars Majestic, beautiful, brutal, 20 Jan 2014
This review is from: Rave Tapes (Audio CD)
Mogwai seem to have been around for ever, but their trademark quiet-loud style has evolved over the years - now the music just flows and meanders as needed.

Elements enter and dissipate, the music builds and ebbs.

This music needs to be played loud. Ears should bleed as the peaks are reached.

I've skipped meals, left work undone and sacrificed relationships to finish this book. Get this, buy this, right now ... but be careful when you start, you'll need a good few clear hours ahead.

... and I have to agree with them. Brilliant writing on a fascinating (but little known) subject. The trials, tribulations and - indeed - terrors of early airline flight and flying as a civilian in World War 2 are brought stunningly to life in this autobiographical work. Don't hesitate - read this today.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fantastic start to a new sequence, 21 Sep 2013

This review is from: Proxima (Hardcover)
I didn't actually know this was a sequence until (a) I read the book and the ending calls out for more, and (2) I read the description here on Amazon, and that describes a series not really this book!

This is vintage Baxter, excellently plotted and generally hard science, bar the couple of MacGuffins that drive the plot. Many interesting characters, some fantastic science AND fiction and a great hook. Can't wait to see how it all pans out.

5.0 out of 5 stars A beautiful novella, 20 Jun 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This beautifully written, evocative (of childhood, of home, of family), magnificent and scary book took me less than two hours to read. Not a novel then, definitely a novella. Too short, but wonderful.

Most Dangerous Enemy: A History of the Battle of Britain
Price: £6.17

5.0 out of 5 stars Definitive, 20 Jun 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
An excellent modern study of the Battle of Britain that covers both strategy and tactics at a high level. It lays to rest many of the myths surrounding the battle, draws heavily on sources from both sides, and is an excellent synthesis of current research. Highly recommended.

Aces High: The War in the Air over the Western Front 1914-18 (Bloomsbury Reader)
Price: £3.08

5.0 out of 5 stars Evocative story of air warfare on the western front., 9 Jun 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
A short, but beautifully written account of the knights of the air above the western front. Non-fighters get short shrift and other fronts none at all, but still a worthwhile introduction.
