Grandma's Bears
Grandma's Bears
by Gina Wilson
Edition: Hardcover

5.0 out of 5 stars Read over and over again, 19 May 2014
This review is from: Grandma's Bears (Hardcover)
We got this out from the library and will now get our own copy as we have borrowed it so many times! My almost five year old son adores it. A story about staying at Grandma's for the first time. But Grandma's house is full of beautiful bears, who are all scared and need Nat to look after them and love them. Gorgeous story and illustrations, the length is just right - plenty of words, but not so look they start to fidget. A classic.

5.0 out of 5 stars Lovely set for a Strawberry Shortcake fan, 10 Mar 2014
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This is a gorgeous little set in a sturdy 24x27cm (approximate) case. There are two of the standard Strawberry Shortcake books plus a 'Progressing Reader' book with simpler text ('The Ballet School'). The cards are little postcards of each of the six characters (pre-Cherry Jam), the pen really smells of strawberries, and the poster is big - it reads 'Life's a Bowl of Berries' and features Strawberry on a swing plus some berrykins, waiting to be coloured in. It really is a lovely set for a present, and my little boy was thrilled.

Cut Up This Book!: Special Occasions
Cut Up This Book!: Special Occasions
by Emily Hogarth
Edition: Paperback

4.0 out of 5 stars Not as good, but still inspiring, 9 May 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
Emily Hogarth's follow up concentrates on special occasions and there are certainly some lovely ideas. Indeed, the pages showing several designs together decorating a room are my favourites, showing how versatile a craft papercutting can be. There are of course some beautiful designs and variations, but I just feel I will end up making few of them. Paper hairbands anyone? The cards and window decorations are beautiful, and she provides a useful if small seasonal motive library, but some designs feel try-hard: how long will moustaches on sticks be in, and others seem unnecessary such as food flags. Still a beautiful book and some designs I will soon use, but it's better to inspire your own creations than as a book to copy all of hers.

4.0 out of 5 stars Joy Crafts brings joy, 28 Mar 2013
= Durability:4.0 out of 5 stars  = Fun:5.0 out of 5 stars  = Educational:5.0 out of 5 stars

This paper set is from Joy Crafts and is thin enough for most origami. There are ten of each design as shown: green scales, red crocodile scales, blue (tending to purple) flowers (my least favourite), purple (more red toned than deep purple) ferns and my favourite, silver stars. A nice little set for a variety of uses, though if you're not doing origami, it may be a bit thin for some projects.

A good selection of card at a reasonable price. The holographic design is the same starry effect for each, with two of each of the following colours: gold, silver, red, green and royal blue. Great for a variety of uses.

5.0 out of 5 stars Get Folding and Cutting, 3 Mar 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This review is from: Creating Kirigami (Paperback)
This set contains origami weight paper and 'card', which I would call normal weight paper, as well as a book full of patterns. The designs are striking but aimed at beginners, and often include alternative ways of cutting (such as the pattern without the final fold if your paper is thicker). The book also includes a picture with folding angles marked out so you can use that if you lack a protractor. The designs include the classic snowflakes as well as honeycomb (this and a couple of other designs suggest adding a detail - in this case a bee - cut out separately), an impressive cube design and a five-fold design featuring 25 small stars (this was the first I tried out, and the result was great considering how easy it was!). Overall, the patterns are brilliant and the paper stack is decent, but it's definitely designed as an introduction to the art rather than an extra. Older children will find designs accessible, although some do require internal cutting (most don't), and the folding can be tricky. But a fun book for a rainy afternoon or to discover a new hobby.

This is a great book, which I was pleased to see after loving Rob Merrett's Sew It, Stuff It. However, this is the same book - the cover is the only difference. This is the third book this has happened to me! So beware - buy one or the other, but not both!

3.0 out of 5 stars Good game but very short!, 17 Feb 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This is a nice game and easy for even young children to play alone. However, it doesn't feel complete. There are five small hidden object scenes and five shorter mini games. My three year old did it all in an hour. And that's it. You can play the same scenes/games again, but there's no variation. It's very nice, but more the standard you might expect on a website rather than something you have to pay for.

5.0 out of 5 stars Plenty for everyone, 30 Jan 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This books contains a wealth of patterns divided into themes: floral, botanical, cats, dogs, birds, wild animals, farm animals, country children, nautical. Although the patterns are all original, there are also ones inspired by the styles of Dutch, Shaker, Native American, Polish and Chinese papercutting. The author is clearly American, but the range of patterns, both individual and scenes, allow for easy adaption. The cover shows one piece cut from white paper and then coloured - there are further examples on the back but none within. The other cover photo shows what most patterns are like - cut with detail added by way of pin pricks. Some patterns could be easily altered to not feature these pinholes but most require them. Overall, the patterns tend towards whimsy, but the variety means hopefully there is something for everyone.
