5.0 out of 5 stars Great book but the same book, 6 Oct. 2012

This review is from: Cut Up This Book! (Flexibound)
I have already reviewed The Crafter's Guide to Papercutting, an excellent book. So good that I was pleased to find another title by the same author, and immediately ordered Cut Up This Book. But beware - the two books are identical except for the differing cover. Very disappointing. (This partially cut cover is nicer than Crafter's Guide but only if the price is the same!).

5.0 out of 5 stars Inspiring, 19 Sept. 2012

As mentioned in the previous review, this lovely book has a short section on the history (with old and new examples to aspire to) as well as the cutting and designing aspect of this craft, so you can get creative yourself. But the designs included are stunning. All the templates are full size and one-sided so you could cut them straight out, if you can stand to damage this gorgeous book. It's the designs which really make this book worth it - highly useable and varying in difficulty, Hogarth shows you how to use them to decorate candles, make pictures (I an especially pleased to see cuts in more than one colour, which most books avoid), cards, tags, banners, cupcake decorations, mobiles and beautiful shadow puppets, which are often the most recognisable example of this genre. A beautiful book and a useable book.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great, but not the colour shown, 16 Sept. 2012

The t-shirts are really good quality for the price. They are on the smaller rather than generous - the necks are tighter than most tops, but it's fine. Ordered the green ones, but they are very dark: almost black. Exchanged them for white and dyed them the colour I needed - really lovely t-shirts.

5.0 out of 5 stars Enthralled, 1 Sept. 2012

Haven't got the DVD yet but just seen this at the cinema, which was quiet throughout as the kids were all spellbound. And as an adult, it was sweet and quite watchable. There was not much diesel/steamie angst and a pleasant lack of irritating voices. Due to the toys, we already knew the answer to the mystery, but it was nicely done both for new fans and for the experts (lots of cameos for engines in the long shots and a lovely scene where the engines remember their most shameful episodes - from the original Awdry books, though now in cartoon). The music is gentler than some of the others, but I think this will probably be the favourite Thomas film (that or Calling All Engines) for both 3 year old and myself.

With effort, you can make Tort go back into his shell and out again, but all it takes to make my 15 month old fall over with laughter is move him very, very slowly about.

Good quality - we love this set of puppets.

4.0 out of 5 stars Very pretty, but beware beads!, 22 Oct. 2010
This greenish cropped cardigan is very pretty, and with the contrast pale pink beads, is a bit funky too. However, the beads come off very easily, which can spoil the pattern. Luckily it does come with a good number of spares.

5.0 out of 5 stars Laced back, 22 Oct. 2010
I don't have this coat, as they didn't have my size, but it is very pretty in the flesh, and also has a cute and funky lace up back.

4.0 out of 5 stars Finally - a range of biscuit recipes!, 9 Feb. 2010
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
I generally find that whilst you can find a range of cake recipes, biscuit ones are samey. This book does involve a large number of recipes using the basic shortbread or basic butter biscuit recipe, but you can forgive that with the beautiful photographs and recipes for things such as Bourbons and Fig Rolls. The author doesn't like giving rough numbers of biscuits, so everything makes 'one batch', but I'm just writing in how many I make each time.

What's the Time, Mr Wolf? (Finger Puppet Books)

4.0 out of 5 stars Simple but captivating, 9 Feb. 2010
The story is not really a story - each page consists of something along the lines of 'What's the time, Mr. Wolf? 'Five o'clock - time to lay the table!', with both a digital and analogue clock in the illustrations, whilst Mr. Wolf and child are always thinking about food. But my seven-month-old's eyes light up when we get this one out, and he tries to eat the wolf at the end! It reminds me of my favourite book as a child, and if you're willing to add a little, it gives a lot back.

If you liked the film, and loved the old records Seymour played, then you will be in heaven with this album. It has all the main songs from the film, as well as a few extra that fit in with the others. Skip James was the highlight for me (as it was in the film), although I personally would have preferred the 'ribbon in my hair' song Enid plays to the deliberately cringe-inducing 'Graduation Rap' and Blueshammer song.
