3.0 out of 5 stars The Funk doesn't quit, 21 Nov. 2014
This review is from: Get On Up [DVD] [2014] (DVD)
It’s hard when watching a biopic about a person’s life if to believe if it’s all true or if it’s been fabricated to make the film more interesting for the audience. Whatever the case is ‘Get on Up’, the story of James Brown’s life is both uplifting and heartbreaking. From next to nothing to world-famous musician, James was and still is a musical influence and inspiration to many around the world.

Based on the life story of the Godfather of Soul, Get on up takes a look inside Browns life starting at the beginning, as an impoverished child and ending with his untimely death and everything in between. Get on up takes the audience on a journey of Browns transition into one of the most influential musicians of the 20th century.

Chadwick Boseman stars as James Brown and is joined on-screen by Viola Davis, Octavia Spencer, Nelsan Ellis, Lennie James, Tika Sumpter, Jill Scott and Dan Akroyd.

Boseman effortlessly portrays Brown, the hardest working man in show business with one of the best performances of 2014, whether Boseman’s performing as Brown in his 20′s or in his 50′s the combination of talent and prosthetics are utterly impressive and the lip syncing to Brown’s tracks is flawless .

The funk really doesn’t quit, Get on up will have audiences tapping their feet and singing along from start to finish.

4.0 out of 5 stars Josh Hutcherson's performance is gut-wrenching., 21 Nov. 2014
Possible spoilers.

Mockingjay begins where the Catching Fire movie ended. Katniss is in a bad way, she’s very upset and nurses are trying to get her to come out from where she’s hiding. From the dialogue you can tell it’s something that has occurred a lot. Katniss is given a sedative much to her pleas not to and the Mockingjay logo appears on screen. We then start off once again with Katniss waking up on her hospital bed in District 13 and is greeted by her little sister Prim.

In Mockingjay Katniss finds herself in district 13, a secret district most people in Panem believe no longer exists. Which is understandable as everyone is hidden underground in a secret bunker. Katniss makes a deal with president coin thanks to the help of Plutarch that ensures the safety of the tributes held in the capitol and a mission to rescue them, in return Katniss is “the Mockingjay” a symbol of rebellion throughout the districts.

Jennifer Lawrence embodies katniss flawlessly once again on screen and gives a stunning performance as the female hero of the movie shooting down two capitol jets with her enhanced bows created by Beetee. Jennifer wowed the audience when she sung during the film, the song is also featured as the first credits song but sung by Lorde. Who knew Jennifer could sing?

Once again Elizabeth Banks’ portrayal of Effie Trinket gives the film the light and laughs it needs, Mockingjay is dark, the darkest of the three books, which is quite hard to fathom when you know that ultimately the books/movies are centered around teenagers fighting, wars, death and poverty. Haymitch is sadly absent throughout most of the movie, but the few scenes he is in he steals with his jokes on being sober and about his relationship with his best friend Katniss.

Josh’s performance as Peeta steals the movie for me, Peeta is now in the possession of the capitol and he’s secretly being conditioned to say and do what Snow wants him to. Watching Josh as Peeta is absolutely heart-breaking as you see him slowly come to realise what has happened to his home, his family and to Katniss. Peeta’s final scene in this movie is gut wrenching and sure to bring the audience to tears.

Fans of the books will be pleased to know that the team behind the making of the movie have done an amazing job at converting the story from sheet to screen in a way that enhances the story more than expected and that warrants the need for a part two, is it November 2015 yet?.

A moment of respect is featured at the beginning of the credits that pay tribute to the late Phillip Seymour Hoffman who passed away last year whilst filming Mockingjay P2.

4.0 out of 5 stars I Didn't want it to end!, 13 Jun. 2013
This review is from: This is the End [DVD] [2013] (DVD)
This is the end follows a group of six friends who find themselves hiding out in James Franco's home after L.A and the rest of the world becomes filled with chaos and destruction that spurred from an earthquake like shake and weird blue lights beaming down from the sky. As the world outside continues to fall apart the friendships inside are too, with tensions running high and a lack of supplies the group find themselves leaving the safety of the house in order to find food the friends discover that their friendship is worth fighting which spurs on a series of life changing events.

The film is a laugh filled movie of epic proportions bursting with career in-jokes and cameo's galore. Great friends on and off screen the relationships portrayed are filled with the `banter' and jokes you would expect from a group of 5 friends with vast film and television resumes. This is The End is definitely not one to be missed, especially for those that are fans of Pineapple Express and are hoping for a sequel.

4.0 out of 5 stars Perfect Piece of Forever, 25 Feb. 2013
After a year of waiting fans have finally seen the 'Epic Conclusion' of The Twilight saga.

The film picks up right where we left of in part one with Bella as she opens her eyes and the audience is treated to their first glimpse of how a Vampires vision is compared to that of a human. Boy that Cullen house is a mess, With all that time on their hands surely they have time to run a Hoover and a duster around the place every once in a while.

The film's first section is a refreshing change from the previous four movies Edward, Bella and Renesme (Bella and Edward's half human half Vampire child) are living happily with the rest of Cullen family and Jacob, of course the film wouldn't be a Twilight film if something didn't go horribly wrong. The Volturi are led to believe the Cullen's have broken one of the few laws Vampires have, they haven't but in order to help the Volturi see that they draft in the help of 18 new Vampires. Anyone else love the Garret and Kate moments? I did!

Being a huge fan of the franchise it's hard to be subjective towards the films, from a fan perspective the way Bill Condon ended the franchise was fantastic and I loved it . The ending scene brings me to tears every time I see it, PERFECTION.

4.0 out of 5 stars Wargs, Orcs and Goblins oh my!, 25 Feb. 2013
Having very little knowledge of The Lord of The Ring's trilogy and Tolkien's work, I was a little unsure as to whether The Hobbit would be for me but my reservations were quickly forgotten as within the first minute I was captivated by `The Shire'.

The adventure follows the journey of Bilbo Baggins, 60 years prior to the events of The Lord of The Rings Trilogy. Bilbo is swept into an quest to reclaim the lost Dwarf Kingdom from Smaug, a fire breathing dragon. Approached by the wizard Gandalf, Bilbo finds himself joining a group of thirteen dwarves. Their journey takes them into the Wild; through treacherous lands filled with Goblins and Orcs and deadly Wargs. After a series of ambushes Bilbo finds himself in a cave with Gollum, Whilst there he finds a Gold ring and takes it, but the ring isn't just a ring. This simple looking gold ring is tied to the fate of all Middle-earth in ways Bilbo can't even imagine.

Nine years after the release of the last of Lord of The Rings trilogy Gandalf and friends (old and new) are back in The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey, directed by Peter Jackson the film is 2 hours and 49 minutes of intense action and laughs. Whilst it seems impossible for such a small book to be split in to separate films, the first installment has been executed beautifully (with the help of Tolkien's other works) and the HFR 3D is a must see if possible.

3.0 out of 5 stars Pitched Perfect, 25 Feb. 2013
This review is from: Pitch Perfect [DVD] [2012] (DVD)
Free spirited Beca (Anna Kendrick), a wannabe music producer heads to Barden University to appease her father before she follows her own dreams of becoming a Producer and moves to L.A. After being ambushed in the shower by Chloe (Brittany Snow), Beca auditions and then gets invited to join the Barden Belles, an all female singing group who are on the ICCA competition trail. Enter Jesse (Skylar Austin) one of the new recruits from an all male rival singing group also from Barden called The Treblemakers.

Beca and Jesse fast become friends resulting in Beca's attitude towards School, The Bellas and Music to be altered. With these changes in her life Beca decides that the Belles need a new, more up to date sound to the dismay of Aubrey (Anna Camp) and after a failure of a performance, a repeat of the year before (outfits and all) and with a chance second shot to win the ICCA competition Aubrey decides to give in and hand the reins over to Beca who leads the Belles to Victory with her own musical mix.

The quirky Belles provide the audience with plenty of laughs especially 'Fat Amy' or should we call her Patrica, played by Rebel Wilson. Pitch Perfect is a flawless combination of both Glee and Mean Girls with a brilliant selection of songs both old and new.

3.0 out of 5 stars Traveled the world in generic jeans, 25 Feb. 2013
No one ever said marriage was easy, and in I Give it a Year, that becomes abundantly clear within the first 20 minutes of viewing. The film follows the first year of marriage between Nat and Josh, played by Rafe Spall and Rose Bryne.

Despite warnings from family and friends, the two marry after a whirlwind seven month relationship. Only a few months in, the relationship seems to barely function when the annoying habits and character traits they dislike about each other (not emptying a clearly full bin, singing the wrong song lyrics and nose scrunching are just a few) become too much to handle.

Their commitments to one another are tested when a `Shiny American' (Simon Baker) and a past relationship (Anna Farris) admit their true feelings, turning one marriage and two singletons into a quasi-romantic relationship.

I Give it A Year is a fun, laugh-filled non-romantic romantic comedy. With its jaw dropping moments through out. As well as some moments that may seem like anecdotes from the viewers own lives, which isn't at all surprising when writer and director told us that the some of the Narrative was plucked from his own marriage and that of family and friends.

2.0 out of 5 stars Visually captivating, 25 Feb. 2013
From Stage to Screen Cirque Du Soleil does not fare well in the efforts of the creative team behind the motion picture, the atmosphere is some what lost during the translation of taking it from the stage to the big screen.

As we find ourselves watching a circus show with next to no dialogue, repetitive aerialist and no real animals it's hard to see why the film was conjured. Whilst World's Away could be wildly popular with fans of the stage show, as a Cirque Du Soleil virgin it was hard to enjoy.

The film, drafted together from 7 of the troupes Las Vegas shows, is the story of a girl and a male aerialist who become enchanted by each other, when an act goes wrong the aerialist finds himself in a dream like world. Not wanting to leave him in the other world alone the girl, Mia follows him. World's Away is 85 minutes of Mia's frantic search to find the guy she fell in love with the moment they first met.

Visually captivating yet boring, the show features stunning backdrops and a eclectic choice of music, there is no doubt that the dancers are oozing with talent but the lack of substance leaves you wanting more.

4.0 out of 5 stars Ralph doesn't Wreck this!, 25 Feb. 2013
If you've ever played a computer game, this film is one you will thoroughly enjoy. Whether it be the bright colours and amazingly sickly looking sweet treats featured in Sugar Rush or the Aliens in Hero's Duty there's something for everyone.

This film is filled with nostalgic memories of childhoods past as we attend `Bad-Anon' over in PAC Man, the room is filled with Ralph's fellow video game baddies such as Bowser and Doctor Eggman. The younger audience won't appreciate the inclusion of pong or the reference to SNES but you'll be able to talk about it once you get home and maybe even get some old games out of storage!

The tongue in cheek attitude towards the collection of medals is a comical theme that flows throughout and the bond between Silverman's Vanellope and Riley's Ralph is so adorably cute it may reduce the softer hearted viewers to tears.

There's a reason why Wreck-It Ralph has been a number one box office hit in the U.S, Visually captivating with a stylish narrative Wreck-It Ralph is set to be yet another Disney Classic.
