3.0 out of 5 stars Fun roller coaster, with a weak ending., 5 Oct. 2015
This review is from: Seveneves (Hardcover)
This is the first Neal Stephenson novel I've read (well, actually listened to), so I can't compare it to his other works.

*WARNING* Some spoilers ahead.

The premise is superb, lets subject humans to an extinction level event, and see what happens. Neal obviously spent a lot of time researching the minutia of what space is like in near Earth orbits, getting around, and what happens when a big thing gets smashed up. That shines through with (almost too much) glorious detail. The central characters are pretty well developed, although the more incidental ones are pretty two dimensional. For the most part I was reasonably convinced that the events of the first half (two thirds?) of the book were plausible, the story was an emotional roller coaster, and I wanted to know how the characters were going to handle things.

Then 5000 years passed, and things started to go wrong. Some little things just didn't make sense. For instance at one point it's mentioned that 5000 years into the future computer technology hasn't quite caught up with what we have right now. That people marvel at how compact and storage dense a decide like a cell-phone is. Are you kidding? In 5000 years, with the head start of actually having the information available on how it's done, man-kind hasn't managed to recreate something that we did first time round in under 60 years? Then there is the fact that the Seven Eves produced seven distinct human strains, and it seems that these strains have remained pretty 'pure' with little cross breeding. Sorry, don't buy that. There are many other things that just don't pass muster, although thankfully they're (mostly) side-line stuff.

The ending was also quite weak. It seemed to be building to a decent crescendo, but it then just seemed fizzle. The main character for the second half, who basically went to sleep a normal human, and woke up with almost super-human abilities, pretty much just runs around and watches things happen.

Worth reading for the first bit, and given the effort to get that far you'd be stupid not to finish it off. But it could have been so much better.

Many of the puzzles don't make sense, required clues are almost impossible to spot, and it's often hard to even know what some of the items you pick up are. Got this for free, glad I didn't pay. Completed in about an hour.

Anker produce some quality products, and this is another shining example. I needed a portable pack that could provide extended charging capability for a couple of phones and a tablet while on long weekend camping trips, and this does the job easily. I can charge an iPhone 4 and a Samsung Note 3 2 or 3 times each without much problem. Adding a tablet into the mix does take a fair chunk, but that is to be expected as most tablets have huge batteries.

Charge time is swift, and the 4 led indicator gives a good enough indication of remaining charge. The built in led flashlight is an added bonus, but doesn't replace a dedicated torch.

5.0 out of 5 stars A nice compact unit, 28 Oct. 2014

Anker quality shines through yet again. I was after something to provide built in charging capability for my new desk, and this fit the bill perfectly. A nice compact unit, with no huge 'wall wart' power adaptor. Provides more than enough charging power for my Samsung Galaxy Note 3, Google Nexus 10, and HP Touchpad, and they charge as quickly as they could.

The FadCandy controller is a fairly easy way to connect NeoPixel strips directly to a computer (Desktop/Laptop/Raspberry Pi) without having to use a microcontroller board like an Arduino in between. With the added advantage of giving better colour rendering, and easy programmability via the Processing language. Sample sketches are available with the drivers to get you up and running (download from https://github.com/scanlime/fadecandy/)

A little tricky to get running out of the box if you are new to this sort of thing, but don't let that put you off.

They're 'Adafruit' Neopixels. Which means they're bright, full RGB, and individually addressable via devices like Arduino etc. The only thing that cost a star is that there are no wires pre soldered - unlike the otherwise identical string that I purchased direct from Adafruit themselves. Oh, and there was no adhesive strip either.

3.0 out of 5 stars Not bad, but let down in low-light, 28 Oct. 2014
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
A nice chunky watch, pretty easy to use, with the standard functions of a watch of this type - Alarm/Stopwatch/Countdown timer etc.

However the one thing that lets it down is low-light visibility. There is an orange led in the '6' position which illuminates the display reasonably well - except the hour hand. It's a dark red colour and is almost invisible in anything except good light. It would help if the hands had any form of luminescence, but for some bizarre reason they don't. The hour markings do, but not the hands. Shame really as that lets the whole thing down.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent Micro USB cables., 27 Oct. 2014
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
I've bought a number of cheap Micro USB cables over the past year or so, and without fail they've turned out to be of terrible quality. It doesn't take long for the wires to come loose from the plugs, then the connection to become dodgy, and then they are only fit for the bin.

So, I started looking round for something of a better quality that will hopefully last a bit longer, and it didn't take long to find these Xperitus cables. They looked good, other reviews seemed positive, and the price was right. Once they arrived it was obvious that these cables are a cut above the rest. For a start they come in a proper box, not just a zip-lok bag like most others. It's a little thing, but it demonstrates that a little more care and attention has been paid. Getting the cables out of the box the quality immediately shines through. They feel great, and they look great, so we're off to a good start. So far I have used them to charge my Samsung Galaxy Note 3, Google Nexus 10, and HP Touchpad. When connected to a high power USB charge source they all charge nice and quickly. I have not collected any specific data to compare charge speeds, but I doubt that these cables are hindering in any way.

As for data, well, they work. It's unlikely that a short cable will have any actual effect on data speeds - and it's digital so it should either work or not. Like I said, these work.

Lastly, the fact that they come in 5 colours is superb. If you're anything like me you will have a mess of cables plugged into your computer. When they're all black it's a nightmare to trace which cable is which. Not a problem when they come in packs of 5 different colours.

Like I said at the start, I've bought lots of cheap Micro USB cables. These are a little more expensive (but not a lot), but so far the small premium seems to be well worth it.

Now, if only they did Mini USB too.

4.0 out of 5 stars Must have bits, 23 Nov. 2010
If you have a Leatherman, and use it for more than simple cutting with the knife or gripping with the pliers, then this is a must have add-on. You get a huge range of bits that cover most situations - ideal for working on computers or electronics devices. Whilst some of the larger allen/torq bits might not engage quite as fully as their full sized counterparts - they have had to be flattened after all - they'll certainly do to get you out of trouble, and they're a darn sight easier to carry around with you.
