Things to Make and Do in the Fourth Dimension
Things to Make and Do in the Fourth Dimension
by Matt Parker
Edition: Hardcover
Price: £11.89

5.0 out of 5 stars Intensely likeable, 24 Oct 2014
Customer review from the Amazon Vine Programme (What's this?)
This is an intensely likeable book, combining interesting anecdotes and mathematical principles along with wry observations, cultural references, and whimsical asides. I do enjoy books on mathematics, although largely lack any real ability to apply what I learn. I've enjoyed the books of Simon Singh and other such authors, and this easily compares with the best of those. It's not a book for really learning how to do mathematics, but it's tremendous for understanding both how mathematics work and how they interface with real life.

4.0 out of 5 stars Do you really need to spend this much on a razor?, 16 Oct 2014
Customer review from the Amazon Vine Programme (What's this?)
It's an objectively high quality electric shaver. It's quiet, it's comfortable, and it gives a gentle and extremely close cut. It's also aesthetically pleasing - it pulses and glows and gently coruscates with so much information it seems a bit like what the crew of the Enterprise might use for personal grooming. It's tremendously good, is what I'm saying.

But...

The price tag is eye-watering, and I can't say I really see or feel much of a difference between this and electric razors a third of the price. There is a point where you have to ask yourself 'How much is a closer shave worth', and to all intents and purposes that point was reached about 150 quid ago for most reasonable people. If you're absolutely in need of the closest shave that money can buy, I can't really fault this. But the diminishing returns at this point over cheaper electric razors diminish *really* quickly.

5.0 out of 5 stars A tremendous iron., 1 Oct 2014
Customer review from the Amazon Vine Programme (What's this?)
his is the best iron I have ever used.

Having traded up from an entry-level iron to a nice enough £40-odd pound one that got the job done, I wasn't convinced that spending an extra £20 - 30 on a higher-end iron would make much difference. However, I got offered this one through Vine and decided to give it a go. How wrong I was.

This iron is amazing. The best thing about it is that it is so smooth. Really smooth. It glides much more easily and feels lighter than previous irons I have used. This isn't because it is lighter really, but because the base plate is so good.

The steam settings work well. There are no issues with water drippage, or clothes ending up damp because the iron had to spurt out a big chunk of steam at once, like has happened to me with other irons. This iron does the job very well and makes ironing less of a chore.

I have a couple of minor niggles with the iron. It (mine anyway) came without a wee plastic jug to fill it - this is standard for all irons I have had before and I felt a little inconvenienced by this. Secondly, it is hard to see whether you have it filled to max or not, because the colour of the see-through bit is not very see-through. You can see when it is about half full, but get it near max and you can no longer clearly see where the water line is. Finally, the cable would benefit from being longer. However, none of these niggles prevent it being worth 5 stars for the actual purpose it was invented for.

4.0 out of 5 stars A very decent tacker, 22 Sep 2014
Customer review from the Amazon Vine Programme (What's this?)
This is well worth it for the price. It's takes a little practise to use, but once you're used to it it's a quick, convenient and comfortable way to tack down carpets and underlay, even faster than you could get with a staple gun. It lacks the accuracy of the latter, but tackers like this are best used when there's no real need for precision in the first place.

The build quality is pretty good - it's sturdy and feels substantial. Recommended.

Level Up!: The Guide to Great Video Game Design
Level Up!: The Guide to Great Video Game Design
by Scott Rogers
Edition: Paperback
Price: £16.99

5.0 out of 5 stars An excellent, experience-driven book, 22 Sep 2014
Customer review from the Amazon Vine Programme (What's this?)
Scott Rogers writes eloquently, and comprehensively, on the topic of game design. His credentials on this score are considerable, including a stint of service on God of War. It's not a manual for developing a game, but instead a series of example-informed discussion about the principles of game design. The structure is lucid and worthwhile, including taxonomies of design and vocabulary that help build understanding of the topics. Some of it is informed by a series of small, capsule, 'best practise' guidelines drawn from experience - that's perhaps where it's strongest as it's where the experience of the author really shines through.

It's not comprehensive enough in itself to stand alone, but when used in conjunction with other key titles on game design it would make an excellent addition to a bookshelf for the aspiring game developer.

2.0 out of 5 stars Not cheap, but tacky, 10 Sep 2014
Customer review from the Amazon Vine Programme (What's this?)
The kit's biggest failing is that of trying to live up to its claim as a 'gift set'. Everything in it feels cheap and tacky, to the point that I'd assume anyone receiving it would think that it came from a pound shop. It also fails to come close to meriting the rather eye-watering price-tag - the bulk of the price is taken up, presumably, by the rather weedy electronic foot file - but it is hard to reconcile the price with what's left after that - a small container of moisture cream, a nail file, a cheap-feeling container bag, foam toe-separators and 'a packet of small sticks'. The foot file by itself has an RRP for £40 - unless the cream is made from crushed diamonds, it's hard to see what else justifies the inflated price-point. Certainly not the packaging.

5.0 out of 5 stars They straighten your hair, 31 Aug 2014
Customer review from the Amazon Vine Programme (What's this?)
These are excellent straighteners - previously, I've worked with both GHD and Braun branded straighteners, Compared to some other devices with gimmicky features, they're a little austere in their offering - no personalised care or sensors for better hair enstraightening or such. However, in their core responsibility, straightening, they work a good deal better than the others I've had. I don't know if the 'millions of negative ions' are responsible for that or if that's more technobabble pseudoscience from the beauty industry (I suspect the latter) but I do notice a real difference. With thick or especially wavy hair, these are especially good over their competitors.

I can say, without qualification, that these things will indeed straighten your hair and that's realistically all that I can ask of them.

3.0 out of 5 stars It's fine., 31 Aug 2014
Customer review from the Amazon Vine Programme (What's this?)
It's fine, I suppose. It's hard to really get worked up about an iron. Best I can do really is talk about the problems I had with it - nothing especially significant, but annoying enough to present themselves as features when I sat down to write this.

The first problem is that while its lightness makes it easy and non-tiring to use, it also means that it doesn't do a very good job on heavy clothes unless you apply more than a healthy amount of pressure. The other is that it's actually quite frightening to use at times, with unsolicited steam being issued from it at seemingly random intervals.

It's an odd thing - too bulky to be a travel iron, and too light to really handle most of my laundry. But don't get me wrong - it's fine. It's just not anything else.

Oral-B Braun CrossAction Replacement Rechargeable Toothbrush Heads - (Pack of 8 Refills)
Oral-B Braun CrossAction Replacement Rechargeable Toothbrush Heads - (Pack of 8 Refills)
Price: £31.02

5.0 out of 5 stars A generous pack of refills., 27 Aug 2014
Customer review from the Amazon Vine Programme (What's this?)
The toothbrush heads that came in this pack are an improvement on the precision clean ones I usually use. The differing heights of the bristles does ensure that you get into the gaps between teeth more effectively without using too much pressure. I used to go through the precision clean heads really fast doing that (like, they would be totally splayed within 6 weeks) but now don't need to use too much pressure to get round the sides of my teeth.

The toothbrush heads I use don't really need replacing all that much, so you're unlikely to go through a pack this big for a while unless you've got a big family and they all use compatible toothbrushes. It's good value for money.
