1.0 out of 5 stars Old material, word for word!, 22 Nov. 2008
I hate to say it, since I am a giant French and Saunders fan, but I was soooooooooo disappointed after paying money to go and see this show. The entire show was virtually word for word rehashes of old sketches from the TV show. In some cases they didn't even act the sketch out and they just played the sketch on a screen to let the audience watch! That's right, I was sitting in a theatre watching clips of French and Saunders on a screen! So I assume if you get this you will watching people watching clips at times. There were a couple of odd moments of new stuff, which quite frankly were pathetic! If you want my advice, buy the complete series 1-6 DVD set instead. Or if you have it already, give this a miss. I hate to say it, but if this is the best F+S can do nowadays, maybe it is for the best that this is the last we will see of them.

1.0 out of 5 stars Don't bother. Import the Region 1 copy instead., 9 Nov. 2008
I bought this assuming it would be identical to the US region 1 Woody Woodpecker collection as they have the same cover. How wrong I was!!!!! Whilst the US Region 1 set has 75 cartoons and a ton of bonus features this UK set only has about 30 cartoons. What a waste of time. Get the region one set instead! The Woody Woodpecker and Friends Classic Collection (REGION 1) (NTSC)

4.0 out of 5 stars Wonderful soundtrack, 3 Feb. 2007
This review is from: Pete's Dragon (Audio CD)
Pete's Dragon has a truly wondeful soundtrack, it's one of those that is very cleverly written, with wondefully creative musical themes, which unfortunately doesn't always get the celebration it deserves.

Now Disney have provided all the songs from opening score from the film. The tone of the music, has a calm feeling to it, even though there are upbeat numbers they are not 'razzle dazzle' and stay close to the almost sombre feeling of the film.

One reason why I did not give this 5 stars is because the songs are not identical to the versions in the film, the running times for the songs on the CD are in most cases shorter than you'll find on the DVD, with mostly the instrumental parts of the songs being omitted, although there is some difference in lyrics for a couple of tunes.

But all in all Pete's Dragon is a stunning soundtrack.

3.0 out of 5 stars A little too much for one viewing!, 12 Dec. 2004
If you are a fan of the TV show i am sure you will get this no matter what. As it is a film, they get away with slighty wilder things than on the TV show, I know what you're thinking, 'How could they possibly get any wilder than the TV show?' Well believe me it does. The like the TV show and the main problem I had with this is that is does start to wear thin after about an hour. It is very hard to watch in one full go, as there is no main story or plot running through the movie as you probably know from the TV show, so it is just segmented and there is nothing to hold your attention for the full duration. I am so glad, I did not go to see this at the cinema because I probably have started to fidget!
It does have ot be said however that this is a fantastic DVD. It is quite literally packed with material, that I am sure all you die hard Jackass fans will lap up.

Rascal [DVD] [1969]

3.0 out of 5 stars sweet, enjoyable but forgettable., 12 Dec. 2004
This review is from: Rascal [DVD] [1969] (DVD)
Set in Wisconsin, Young Sterling North (played by Bill Mumy) dreams of nothing more than spending the summer building a canoe. The film is also narrated by a now-grownup Sterling (voiced by Walter Pidgeon). Sterling's mother has passed away, and his father is usually out of town on business. On the last day of school his father returns to town and the two go out into the woods, where they stumble across a family of raccoons. When the mother raccoon is scared away by their dog Wowser, Sterling and his father discover a baby raccoon has been left behind, and so they adopt it and name it Rascal.
At first Sterling and his new friend spend the summer playing, fishing and riding about the countryside. However, as Rascal grows up, he inevitably begins to live up to his name, and starts to cause trouble in the small town. Rascal's trouble making leads to one of the more exciting scenes in the film. One of the highlights of the film is the race which takes place between a motor car and a horse and cart, in order to find out which is the fastest. The scenes are well staged and filmed. In general the film is very formulaic and the two most interesting parts are the two mentioned above and the ending, which I won't spoil for you. There are no real surprises in this film, the plot is obvious from the start, and Disney have made several Boy and animal movies before with similar outcomes. However I feel 'Rascal' does have a certain charm which is lacking from some other movies with a similar theme. Ultimately Sterling has to make the decision to keep Rascal, or to free him. The parting works well and is very solemn, perhaps due to it's simplicity, it is not overly dramatic.
On the whole Rascal may not be one of Disney's blockbuster films, however is still very solid and does hold together well. It is an enjoyable movie. The film has the same flavour as Old Yeller, Big Red, you know the boy and his pet movie, which after so many times tends to wear thin, and it's only the most remarkable ones like Old Yeller that people tend to remember.
Once again Disney have disappointingly graced us with a pan and scan release. When will they learn?

3.0 out of 5 stars Not a masterpiece but still fun., 12 Dec. 2004
This review is from: The Gnome Mobile [DVD] (DVD)
In comparison to some of Walt Disney's other great live action films, such as: Mary Poppins; Bedknobs and Broomsticks; The Parent Trap and Swiss Family Robinson, The Gnome Mobile doesn't quite reach the same level, but it is still entertaining.
The story revolves around D.J. Mulrooney, a rich business man and owner ofMulrooney Lumber and his two children (Matthew Garber and Karen Dotrice, the children from Mary Poppins). When Mulrooney takes his grandchildren on a picnic. Granddaughter Elizabeth goes off in to the forest and she discovers a gnome named Jasper. Usually gnomes do not speak to humans, so at first he is shocked that both humand and gnomes alike share a common language. Jasper and his Grandpsa Knobby are the last of the gnomes and because of this he is starting to become see through. Knobby desires to see Jasper find a wife, but there are no gnome maidens.
Elizabeth assures the gnome that her granfather will help and after some persuasion he agrees. Tey set off in search of a new home, there are rumours of gnomes far north. So they set off in the grandfather's Rolls royce, which affectionaltely becomes nicknamed the 'Gnome Mobile'. From here the film floows the journey of the company, and the obstacles they encounter, with a comic twist on all proceedings, as is the flavour of the movie.
The only song in this film id 'The Gnome Mobile' written by the Sherman Brothers, the duo behind Mary Poppins, The Parent Trap, The Jungle Book, The Aristocats and many more disney classics. Although it's not a show stopper the song is quite catchy.
The visuals in the film are not quite as stunning as those used in the earlier film 'Darby O'Gill and the Little People' which had a similar focus on humans interacting with little people. Howevr there are still a few moments that look quite stunning. Although this film did not have the same budget as Darby O'Gill and where Darby was more a serious movie, this is a comedy of the sixties so as you can imagine there is plenty of slapstick along with gnomes behind dressed in all varieties of colours!
I have knocked off a star for this DVD because it is Pan and Scan, while in the past this was forgiveable, in this day and age I think it is ridiculous that pan and scan is still occuring. I know some people hate seeing those 'black bars' at the top and bottom of the screen but that doesn't mean the rest of us should be punished by having part of the picture chopped off!
All in all The Gnome Mobile is not a Disney masterpiece but it is very entertaining and one of the more memorable Disney films.
