4.0 out of 5 stars Eventually set up - a good drive let down by silly installation issues., 17 Dec 2014
Customer review from the Amazon Vine Programme (What's this?)
If you want a drive for streaming media, look elsewhere. This is designed solely for storing data securely on the encrypted partition of the drive. For the secure "encryption standard developed by the U.S. government designed to meet FIPS 140-2 Level 3 requirements to protect sensitive data." you pay a premium over a standard drive, but for peace of mind from prying eyes, you may feel it a worthwhile trade off.

The drive itself is in no way classed as a slim drive. It is a chunky heavy drive with rubberised corners that also act as feet, raising the drive off stable. It comes with a lead that plugs into the drive then the computer and nothing else. All the documentation is supplied on a public partition on the drive itself. When in use the drive has 3 lights to show the operations. The Orange light is the power light to tell you when it is on, the blue light is a read/write light to let you know when the disk is being accessed and a further light alternating between green and red - to show if the drive is locked (red) or unlocked (green) to allow access to the secure contents.

The first thing you have to do when installing is format the drive with a password of your choosing, so that it can then encrypt a partition on the drive. I have a an iMac, so I followed the following steps to set it up.

After inserting the USB from the drive to the computer, I opened the IRONKEY drive to locate the read me file to see what steps needed to be taken, this was located in Documents, Basic. The file is called "Basic User Guide". This states that to install the Mac software, go the the Mac folder and open the file Ironkey. However, there is no Mac folder, however there is are 2 files called Ironkey in the root directory, for PC open the one with .exe extension, otherwise open the other file. When open, you are asked to enter a password - don't make it too easy as this will defeat the object of a secure drive. After this continue to the Device Setup for some options to consider, I opted for a self destruct option if there are 10 consecutive log in fails. I opted for FAT32 rather than NTFS as I am running on a Mac, otherwise for PC only, select NTFS. I also opted to install Auto Launch Assist to speed up loading times. When satisfied with the settings, it will then format the drive. After it had formatted it quit unexpectedly. I had to unplug the drive and re-insert it again. It asked for my password so I though everything was OK, but it stated the drive was unreadable and did I want to re-start the setup procedure. I opted for yes. The same thing happened yet again, failing after formatting (which took 7:36). On the 3rd try, I opted not to install Auto Launch Assist as I thought that may be the culprit, and it formatted with no problems this time round, however, on checking the settings later, it was installed on the drive. Weird!

When you enter your password to unlock the drive, it opens it up and is shown as a hard drive in the Finder window for you to move files to and from. The Iron key Control panel is also active whilst the drive is connected and unlocked, and just a password box when locked. From the control panel you can lock the drive (bottom left button) before removing to secure your contents. At the top are 3 main icons Applications, Files and Settings. Clicking the Files button will open the Finder on a Mac so files can be moved to it, viewed, erased etc. Settings has Tools (Upgrade to Enterprise, re-format secure volume or uninstall/install Auto Launch Assist). Password is to change the password you have set for the drive or to set an option for multiple failed log in attempts (re-set device or self destruct). Preferences sets the language, auto lock after disk inactivity and an unlock message and also the device information. The bottom right shows a bar indicating the space that is left, together with a size of how much free space there is. When the drive is locked, the actual drive is removed from Finder so you do not know it is there, only after entering the password in the Control Panel will allow the drive to be seen.

I have copied several large files, movies, music and lots of small files, and the read/write speed has been far better than expected. It is faster than my WD Slim drive, my Seagate Wireless Media Drive and several of my USB sticks in various sizes from 512mb to 64Gb.

Upon checking the size of the partitions, the public volume has a size of 365mb with 258mb free, and the secure volume has 499.66Gb space for securing your data.

I like this drive and have copied my photos to it for backup, as well as some music and important documentation files and scans. The only thing that let it down was the hiccup with the installation not going as smoothly as anticipated. It may be a breeze with a PC, but was not so on my Mac.

Got this to replace an older cover that was being worn away. When fixing the cover on, it seemed to only just fit and it was a struggle to do so, even with 2 of us stretching and pulling it. Looks OK on and does the job.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent solar light, 15 Dec 2014
This item was sent to me by the supplier for an honest and unbiased review.

I have a couple of LED lights activated by movement, these are battery as they are placed underneath an overhang. However, if you have good sunlight, solar is the way. This is very easy to install. The backing plate is crewed to the wall, and the light fits on the bracket.

I used a 5.5mm masonry drill to drill the holes, and used the supplied wall plugs and cross head screws to hold the back plate into position. This was very easy as the main light is fixed separately. Then you remove the plastic cover from the solar panel and place the light on the bracket, a push on the light makes sure it in place. Supplied with the screws is a thin metal spike, which is used to insert in the middle hole in the underside on the lamp to turn the unit on and off, but once turned on it really does not need to be turned off. During the day the sunlight will charge the batteries and a small light on the underside will show that it is being charged. Several hours of daylight will charge the batteries, so make sire it is positioned in a place where sunlight is available for a long period.

I positioned this above my rear door, and as soon as you open the door, the light comes on. Being a larger light panel, it illuminates the patio very well. I am able to step outside and place the rubbish in the bin with no problems. Also, if the light comes on I know there is someone or something outside (usually one of my cats waiting to come in).

As it is a fairly large solar panel light, it will stick out slightly, so make sure that you position it as not to catch yourself on it. Mine was placed 2 brick levels above the door, and it works perfectly.

Overall, really pleased with this light. Being solar means I do not have to worry about batteries going flat.

3.0 out of 5 stars Overall, a good idea let down by some silly flaws., 10 Dec 2014
Customer review from the Amazon Vine Programme (What's this?)
I like the idea of a device to tracy your activity and display it as an easy to read stat chart. Worn on the wrist throughout the day and night, it will keep track of movement and display steps taken, distance travelled, calories burned, stairs climbed and active minutes. Press the button on the side and a bright green OLED display shows you the stats. Create an account with Fitbit, download the smartphone app, link it with Bluetooth and it will update and record your activity for you to check against previous days.

What I liked:
Nice easy to read display, day and night.
Full record of activity when worn.
Regular emails (if opted in) regarding your activity against previous weeks.
Easy to keep track of steps made.

What I don't like:
The small is VERY small. I have small wrists and I had to stretch it to the max just to fit it on my wrist. This will be fine for a smaller person, child or small lady, otherwise go for the large.
Locking the strap is very fiddly, better option would be a buckle. Probably because it was so small. Do not know how the other reviewers managed to get it on their wrists - must have smaller wrists than me,
You need to remember to keep charging it, I thought the modern phone battery didn't last long, now I have to charge 2 things up.
One night I woke up at 2:38am (looked at the time on the Fitbit Charge) then went back to sleep. Input what time I went to bed and woke up the next day and that time it said I was in a deep sleep - so not that reliable.
Some of the steps seemed to be missing compared to a separate pedometer that I used as a reference. The odd one yes, but not 100's.
You cannot remove the main body from the band, so if the band were to split, you have had it.
Caller ID seems to be a gimmick. I just look at my phone, rather than this, then get my phone - an unnecessary step.

Overall, a good idea let down by some silly flaws.

5.0 out of 5 stars Brilliant accurate infrared thermometer at a low cost., 4 Dec 2014
I was sent this item by the supplier for an unbiased and honest review.

It is hard to believe that such a high quality device is so cheap, not many years ago this item would have been easily 4x this price.

The unit is powered by a square PP9 battery (supplied) and is so easy to operate. Just depress the trigger button and you get an instant readout of the temperature. If you are unsure where it is aiming, just press the left button underneath the display to emit a red laser pointer. The middle button changes the readout between C and F, and the right button turns on/off the back lit display.

I have tested the radiators, cats, bulbs, fermenting wine and beer, fridge contents etc, and the readout has been so easy to see and the device so easy to use. Had some fun as well as the cats chased the red laser dot around the room.

It feels like a spray nozzle for watering the garden, or a ray gun from the future, it makes me smile each time I use it, and keep testing different items to see their temperature.

Very handy around the house, and for such a low price, its a steal.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good filters but slower to filter water, 4 Dec 2014
Customer review from the Amazon Vine Programme (What's this?)
A filter cartridge that last a long time, and you get 2 cartridges that last 6 months. I have been using a filter for about 2 months and have noticed a difference with tea and coffee, but never use filtered water for cooking etc, it takes too long to filter and to be honest, can't tell any difference.

Filtering the water is slower than Brita type filters, but being in the filtration business this is not a bad thing, as there will be more contact time with the active ingredients in the filter resulting in a better filtration.

What I don't get is that a 6 month supply is dearer than a 12 month supply (on Amazon at 4th December 2015). The 12 month supply has 4 filters instead of 2 and os £1.50 cheaper. If this is a pricing error, suggest that if you use this type of filter, stock up on the 12 month supply whilst it is that price.

5.0 out of 5 stars LED bulbs are the future., 3 Dec 2014
Customer review from the Amazon Vine Programme (What's this?)
The quality of LED bulbs has gotten better over the last few years. This is a 6 watt LED bayonet style bulb that is equivalent to a standard 40 watt bulb. The description says it is a 9 watt, but it is definitely 6 watt.

The colour is a warm white, very similar to the old filament bulbs. If you want a more white light like daylight type, then look for a whiter white.

Running costs are extremely low, the bulb does not get hot. A very good bulb, and although dearer to buy, will save in the long run and you benefit from full instant light rather than dim then getting brighter like the normal energy saving bulbs.
