2.0 out of 5 stars S*** with a few solid parts, 9 Dec 2013
This review is from: The Black Album (Audio CD)
I get that most rappers adopt an egotistical persona but this record is basically a love letter to himself.

'December 4' is laughably bad he got his mum to narrate the track! - who cares if he ride a bike at 4is this a mark of greatness?

All the tracks deal with the same subject matter - mostly about selling drugs when he was young, yes compared to most other rappers Jay-Z's backstory is soft.

The other half of Jay-Z is just boasting and telling us the uninformed listener of his importance and genius.

Some of the stronger moments here include 99 problems (obviously), Allure and My 1st song

The black album is a project of vanity a truly vacuous record that annoys with the first track.

It's apparent in 2013 that Jay-Z is only about the fame and money he has never had anything important to say ever and he does not care about his fellow African Americans - Jay-Z is in fact white and a remarkably average rapper

1.0 out of 5 stars please give the record a listen to before you buy..., 29 Sep 2013
This review is from: Winery Dogs (Audio CD)
another one of mike portnoy's bands that he put together flailing from being booted out of dream theater. first of all this sounds promising billy sheehan and mike portnoy! richie kotzen i'm not familiar with. Now before i explain why i gave this album 1 star i will preface it by saying that obviously all three of these guys are great musicians.

Because they can play it's even more disappointing to here stock alt-rock riffs and these awful lyrics - for a band called the 'winery dogs' it's puzzling as to why their songs are all about sobriety and angels etc...

and the vocals such a pale imitation of chris cornell, it's been done and you're also over 20 years late to cash in on this style

I'm not sure who compared this to cream, I don't think cream ever wrote christian alt rock in the vein of "I'm no angel" this sounds nothing like 60's blues rock at all

please make sure you have a listen to this before buying because i really think the 130+ 5 star reviews are misleading and dishonest. Even if you like this record there is no way you could like that much.

5.0 out of 5 stars Ruined by an abundance of strange one star reviews (beware of trolls), 10 Jun 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
I for one do not own the '92 remasters of the stranglers albums however i do own a couple of the 2001 ones and they are exactly the same. I don't really have the energy or time to go and collect and compare the '92 discs presuming how sought after they are after reading these reviews. On an interesting side note I've just checked the reviews for the single 2001 remasters and they all have an overall 4-5 star rating for some reason if you collect those and put it into one affordable set with a disc of rarities it gets a bad review?

While I don't have the '92 discs to compare to this is still the best way to pickup a whole era of stranglers history including a rarities disc I'd definitely still recommend this set over picking up single 2001 cds.

I would also suggest that the people that have given this product bad reviews sound like they already own the stranglers catalog at least one time over (and probably on vinyl too which almost always sounds better than a CD) so there would be no incentive to buy this set anyway just to put those reviews in context (what type of psycho is buying stranglers cds several times over?).

This set is a great way to immerse yourself in the stranglers

PS - read amazon US reviews as they are honest don't bother with the nutters that have trolled the reviews this product

5.0 out of 5 stars A great set puzzled by the bad reviews, 9 Jan 2013
This review is from: Original Album Series (Audio CD)
It should be very clear to everybody that this is the original album series what this means is that the album are in cardboard sleeves housed in a small cardboard box. There are no liner notes except whats reprinted on the front an backs of the sleeves and the font is usually very small. More often than not these are usually not the most up to date remaster of the albums. The main point of contention with original album series is that people want the most up to date with extra tracks etc This can be easily avoided if people took the time to look at the track listing, there are no bonus tracks in this box . I feel for the price they are worth it especially if you're looking to get into a band you can pick up a chunk of their output in one place.

There is a review here saying there is no sound? I can confirm that these CDs play perfectly obviously there is problem with that persons CD player/speakers.

While the last two discs in this box are average their first three albums are must owns and this is a great way to get them if you do not mind not owning bonus tracks etc.

4.0 out of 5 stars Unfinished - could of benefited from better sequencing, 7 July 2012
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
"Lucky you" are the first words that come belching out of Lydon's gob on This Is PiL a track that can either be enjoyable or annoying at the same time it basically consists of "This is PiL, This is a PiL loading zone" over and again. The heavy repetition of lyrics is also prevalent on 'One Drop' and "Terra Gate" especially. The repetition of the same lyric over and over is something of a Lydon trademark from their first album on, twisting the same phrases over and over again all the vile and venom being ringed out of each word (i.e. Religion from their first album.

The lyrics on these early tracks seem to lack any real social comment or anger even Lydons voice moves in and out of the music which seems undermixed and doesn't really jump out at you. The bass is especially not present which is a little disappointing considering the bass of Jah Wobble was the signature sound of PiL. Feeling underwhelmed after one drop it moves into Deeper Water which is a pleasant track once again nothing really remarkable about this one either.

Things start to pick up on 'Human' and 'I must be dreaming' which is almost dub like and very welcome so far. The real meat on this album comes when 'It said that' and the 'room i am in' starts both experimental tracks the latter being a spoken word track which something like early PiL. After that is the 'Lollipop Opera' which is a dance beat over almost what could be considered a rhyming game Lydon's lyrics start to sting like they used to (almost). "Fool" starts after that which is a nice blues ballad which kind of feels out of place it's almost like a breather after the hyperactive lollipop opera.

The best part of this album comes in the last two tracks, the psychedelic 'Reggie Song' and 'Out Of The Woods' which really cooks over a long jam highlights include double tracked Lydon really belting it halfway through.

This is a very loose unfinished sounding record which is made up of really half hearted pop-ish tracks in the first half but takes a turn for the better on Human onwards. The music seems really under mixed and muddy which really hurts the album. Maybe a better track sequence would help the album or just more time spent working on the tracks (especially Deeper Water which goes nowhere for six minutes similar to One Drop and Terra Gate. The final word from me is that it's been a very long time since a new PiL album and a new PiL album is better than no PiL album, without the vitriol of Lydon some of the humour of PiL shines through which is a different thing to hear from them. It's a very long wait for a new album - Heres hoping this is a warm up for the next one which hopefully happens in the next few years and not on Lydon's 70th birthday.

4.0 out of 5 stars And Interesting Project, 26 Jun 2012
This review is from: OVO (Audio CD)
If you've come this far then you probably know that this is a soundtrack for the Millennium Dome Show. One of the main aims of this project was to seam world music and who better to do that than the creator of WOMAD.

This CD isn't as focused as his other soundtrack projects and it's greatly misses the visual aspect which you can see in the booklet. Also it probably should be said that Peter Gabriel only really starts singing in parts from Track 5 onwards. His lack of a vocal presence in favour of other vocalists really distances himself from this album. Although it should be said that this album is more of an ensemble effort than just Peter like the Blue Ball project. I really wish he sung the parts that Paul Buchanan sang as it seems hes just copying his vocal style anyway (Make Tomorrow - especially).

This release is worth it to get the tower that ate people/Revenge/White Ashes and The Nest that sailed the sky/the tree that went up/Make Tomorrow. The Tower starts off sounding like an almost 2000's King Crimson improv and at times sounds almost like the residents (White Ashes). Although you may want to skip downside up which in my opinion is peter gabriels worst track. Its just lame and it somehow makes an appearance on the still growing up live DVD and New Blood I hope he pulls this track out of any future live sets. The Ovo version is the best as it neither Melanie Gabriel or Peter sings this track.

I would recommend this one after you've checked out his other 'proper' albums and soundtracks first. Ovo, scratch my back and new blood sort of serve as stop gap releases (which was said in another review) as we patiently wait for I/O will we see it in 2012?
