1.0 out of 5 stars Utterly Pointless, 27 Nov. 2012
This review is from: The Jazz Age (MP3 Download)
I love Roxy music. I love 1920's Jazz . Put them together and what have you got? A tedious pointless plod of an album that has nothing to say and can't even say that well enough for me to get past one or two tracks. Apparently Mr.Ferry is pleased with it. Well, I'm glad somebody is . Quite simply- why?

5.0 out of 5 stars Good Saturday NIght country music!, 4 Nov. 2012
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
Dont know much about Brad Paisley to be honest, bought this on a whim after hearing one or two tracks on the radio. Its a really enjoyable album , you dont have to be a great fan of country music to enjoy it (I'm not normally into country) , well produced and played and thankfully devoid of the usual country cliches.

3.0 out of 5 stars Inoffensive. Your Granny will love it., 8 Oct. 2012
This review is from: Long Wave (MP3 Download)
It's Jeff Lynne so it will be really good right? Well, no actually. It's "nice" . Its there but you won't notice it playing, it starts and 27 minutes later it finishes (yes folks, 27 minutes is all you get for your money). Its hard to be too cruel as it is well produced, competently played and of course Jeff is(was?) the maestro behind E.L.O. Play it on a sunday when your granny comes for tea. She will love it. In my opinion it is just another Leff Lynne vanity project (see also the other "new" album called Mr Blue Sky)and is absolutely OK. nothing more, nothing less. A wasted opportunity and essentially a bit of a rip off.

3.0 out of 5 stars What is the point of this Album?, 8 Oct. 2012
I've been a fan of E.L.O. since I first heard 10538 Overture back in the early 70's. I've got all the ELO albums and a lot of other things that Jeff Lynne has been involved in .. hence I am so disappointed in this CD .Basically, why bother? The originals are excellent and if some of the production sounds a little dated they still sound better than these new versions. This new album (which is a Jeff Lynne solo "vanity project", not a real ELO album)is sterile and uninspired and sounds like your average ELO tribute band. It says a lot that he is releasing two "new" albums on the same day and neither has a new Jeff Lynne composition on them . Has Jeff finally run out of ideas ? You have to hope not but the signs are not good. IF you want the REAL best of ELO there are many compilations out there quite cheap. I really don't see any point in this release and sadly this album will probably not be played again. Come on Jeff, give us some Proper New Material !

2.0 out of 5 stars Very Disappointing. Their worst yet ., 22 Sept. 2012
This review is from: Easy Star's Thrillah (Audio CD)
As someone who has bought and loved all the other Easy-Stars albums I was really looking forward to getting this one. Sadly it turned out to be a huge disappointment. The inspired dub style of earlier albums such as Dub Side of the Moon or Easy Stars Lonely Hearts Dub Band has, by and large, gone and been replaced by formulaic and to be honest slightly boring covers . The album doesnt actually hit a groove til the 3rd track (the girl is mine), the first two tracks are just so bland that they come across as a watered down UB40. There are possibly 3 or 4 decent tracks on here - The girl is mine, Thriller, Beat it are all good . Billie Jean starts off well then meanders on for two minutes longer than it ought to . And really thats it. A real shame- far and away the worst album the Easy Star All stars have come up with and unlikely to get played very often.

4.0 out of 5 stars Penguin Cafe meets Philip Glass ?, 12 Sept. 2012
This review is from: Insofar (Audio CD)
As someone who has bought every release from both the original Penguin Cafe Orchestra and the newer Penguin Cafe I was intrigued to see what Arthur Jeffes would come up with away from the confines of the Penguin Cafe. Well, the answer is something slightly similar but tending towards the minimalist and experimental end of the spectrum. Fans of Philp Glass (and indeed Einaudi's "Nightbook" album) will find much to enjoy here. Over an hour long it may be best enjoyed in chunks rather than all at once as after a while the piano and violin sound can become a little intense, but all in all I enjoyed listening to it and feel it will improve even further with repeated plays. From a personal point of view I have to say that I hope this is only a diversion from the Penguin Cafe , but a worthwhile one for all that.

5.0 out of 5 stars Gregorian Calm - just wonderful, 28 Aug. 2012
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This album is a wonderful blend of Gregorian chant and calming new-age/ambient instrumentation. Nothing like Enigma (who I also like) , this is at completely the other end of the scale. Perfect late night listening and I would imagine great if you have trouble sleeping . Soothing, serene, calming. As an antidote to modern stressful living this CD would take some beating.

4.0 out of 5 stars Greek Folk music with a twist, 28 Aug. 2012
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
I came to this album after buying their 2012 album "Greekadelia" - an impulse buy which has become a bit of a favourite .. This earlier album is a bit more traditional but none the less has enough twists and diversions to be of real interest. Powerful yet vulnerable vocals all underlined by a mix of traditional and modern instruments... This is another album that shows there is so much more to Greek music than endless reruns of Zorba, etc . You dont need to know what they are singing about to enjoy this .. ideal to listen to with a bottle of Mythos and a plate of keftedes or moussaka !

2.0 out of 5 stars Should have been great - but isn't, 20 Aug. 2012
This review is from: Electrospective (MP3 Download)
This was a great chance for somebody to show how the commercial side of electronic music has progressed from the 60's to the present day. Sadly, what they have done is put together "Now thats what I call hits with a synthesiser on" instead. Usual EMI suspects crawl from the swamp for the umpteenth time (Duran Duran ? Electronic music pioneers? I dont think so..) .. so where are Tontos Expanding Head Band? Kraftwerk? Gary Numan? Faust? Vangelis? Jean-Michel Jarre? Perrey-Kingsley? Oh, and if we're going to do 70's/80's electronic dance where is "I Feel Love" and "This beat is Technotronic"? .. The answer simply is that they aren't on EMI so don't get on the album. The list of missing artists who really should be on here is endless really . Summary, A very poor compilation and a real wasted opportunity.

1.0 out of 5 stars Shamless and Monotonous, 13 Aug. 2012
Carfully timed to coincide with his appearance at the 2012 Olympics closing ceremony this monotonous tiresome offering only serves to remind us that whatever talent George Michael may have once had has long since evaporated. Even shamelessly plugging this new single in front of billions of people is unlikely to return this has been to the charts. There was a time when George Michael's music was clever and classy. No more.
