Mary Ann in Autumn: Tales of the City 8
Mary Ann in Autumn: Tales of the City 8
by Armistead Maupin
Edition: Paperback
Price: £6.39

5.0 out of 5 stars A great continuation of the saga, 1 Mar. 2014

Maupin's writing style is like putting on a favourite coat - it feels comfortable and familiar straight away. His characters develop and grow and never appear stereotypical or tired. they change as real people do and Maupin is adept at capturing this in his stories.

1.0 out of 5 stars Noisy & fiddly - oh, and didn't work, 16 Aug. 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
The SkipDr looks impressive and as though it should be able to cope with abused discs. Appearances, however, can be deceiving and this is certainly the case here. In use, again it looks like it should work, but after several attempts with various discs it failed on every occasion. The discs I used had a variety of faults - slight scuffs and others which appeared physically perfect but wouldn't play. Straight to eBay I think.

How to Get a Grip
How to Get a Grip
by Matthew Kimberley
Edition: Paperback
Price: £7.99

5.0 out of 5 stars No nonsense good advice, 16 Aug. 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This review is from: How to Get a Grip (Paperback)
Matthew's style is tough and uncompromising. It answers the critics of self help literature who paint the genre as soppy and appealing to the viewer's fears. Matthew's approach is straightforward and tells you what you knew already, but also shows how to tackle fears and failings and inbred bad habits one piece at a time. An eminently practical and genuinely useful book.

PHP and MySQL For Dummies
PHP and MySQL For Dummies

2.0 out of 5 stars For dummies? Not!, 11 Aug. 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
I chose this as I have not used PHP except for pre-made scripts, and wanted to learn how to incorporate PHP and MySQL myself for custom projects. Unfortunately, on the introduction Janet says she's assuming knowledge of PHP and writing scripts. For Dummies? FAIL.

The book uses 2 examples: a simple online shop for a Pet Store; and a Membership Site. These examples are followed through the book until almost the final chapter where instructions on how to use the PHP and MySQL in a website are shown - but at this, possibly most important step - she refers to the Membership Site as the Pet Store customers database. This new nomenclature made me stop and go back and re-read and stop, and go back and re-read again until I realised this was actually the same thing.

There are literally chapters devoted to how to use a database, how to execute various queries on an SQL database. The instructions on how to actually use the wretched things in a web building environment are one chapter and rushed through.

As an accompaniment to the TV series, this does not fail. It adds to the screen version and the recipes are very easy to follow and well photographed.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great value, 31 July 2013

This is a well made roaster - large enough for a family joint, but works well with small cuts. Handles on either end and the lid make it easy to handle even when hot.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Fabulous Good Looking Kettle, 22 April 2008
We bought this to replace our previous brushed steel Montana which we've had for four years without a hitch. This kettle looks beautiful as you take it out of the box and it just gets better. After following the set up instructions, it boils quickly and without much noise. makes a great cuppa with no aftertaste or taint.

With its stainless steel body it looks fabulous on the worktop and is great value for money.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Basic Toaster, 22 April 2008
This is a stunning stainless steel toaster that does what it says on the box.

2 Slices, defrost and a range of heat settings. It takes up no space and after following the set up instructions it is a breeze to use.

Great value for money and good looking!
