Yoga for a New You
by DK
Edition: Paperback
Price: £8.99

5.0 out of 5 stars Concise but comprehensive, 23 Dec. 2014
This review is from: Yoga for a New You (Paperback)
Concise but comprehensive, this would please anyone who is either beginning to practice yoga, or who wishes to improve. The illustrations are clear and the text is easy to follow, with tips provided on how to perform the asanas, and alternatives in some cases for practitioners with medical conditions. Altogether, a valuable resource.

5.0 out of 5 stars A journey through the elements, 24 Jun. 2014
You don't need to be a chemistry graduate, or even have a sound recollection of school science, to enjoy this. Even basic chemical terms like isotope and allotrope are clearly explained. The presentation is simple, with a double page (or in some cases, two double pages) devoted to each element, exploring its chemical properties, history of discovery and use, and its importance to plants and animals. We learn how Phosphorous gained the reputation of being 'the devil's element', how sulphur was used as a naval weapon in the Byzantine empire, and the use of argon lasers in surgery. If you enjoy combining serious knowledge with trivia, you will love this book.

The Shell Seekers [DVD][2006]
The Shell Seekers [DVD][2006]
Dvd ~ Vanessa Redgrave
Price: £10.89

4.0 out of 5 stars A lovely drama, 26 May 2014
The drama spans five decades starring Penelope as an elderly lady who has inherited valuable paintings from her artist father. In her mature years, her grown-up children become acutely aware of the paintings' value and two of them (Noel and Nancy) seek to persuade her to part with them. But Penelope's emotional ties to the paintings and her Cornish childhood home would make such parting an immensely difficult task. There is an uglier side to the drama, as Noel and Nancy display unmitigated greed.

Vanessa Redgrave delivers a convincing performance as the elderly Penelope, and there is good casting and acting from most of the supporting cast. Noel and Nancy on the other hand are portrayed as one-dimensional characters; their dialogue and performance are wooden. Altogether, this is a lovely drama, which well deserves another viewing.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good adaptation of a great novel, 3 Mar. 2014
Having viewed the film (several times) and read the novel (recently), I'm reasonably impressed by the effectiveness of the adaptation. There are critical differences - the book focuses more on Gordon's squalid existence, whereas the film tries to balance that political commentary with the lightness of a RomCom. That balance generally succeeds, and creates some exceedingly memorable characters - the po-faced landlady followed by the cheerful one; the patient sympathetic publisher and his insufferably snobbish girlfriend; the pompous magistrate with his formulaic sentencing approach. Well worth another viewing.

Great Train Journeys of the World (Time Out Guides)
Great Train Journeys of the World (Time Out Guides)
by Peter Lynch
Edition: Paperback
Price: £16.99

4.0 out of 5 stars Train Journeys - Great and Small, 23 Feb. 2014
What is it that makes a great train journey? Epic distances? Extremes of altitude? Feats of engineering? Nostalgia? A photographer's paradise? If you've answered 'yes' to any of these, please read further.

But what makes a great train journey BOOK? Now that is a more difficult question. Some readers will no doubt immerse themselves in the history of each line and stock. Others will be fascinated by the engineering feats that turned inhospitable territories into vital communication routes. Whilst others will be awestruck by the quality of the images, or be engrossed in the authors' anecdotes or the practical tips.

Great Train Journeys of the World achieves all of these objectives. From the expanse of the Moscow to Beijing and trans-Australia lines to the tourist lines of England and Scotland, there is something to stir the imagination of every armchair rail traveller.

With around 40 journeys, each occupying around 5-6 pages of images and text, the focus is on breadth rather than depth.

Pete Seeger's Greatest Hits
Pete Seeger's Greatest Hits
Price: £6.41

5.0 out of 5 stars Glorious, 9 Feb. 2014
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
I've passively listened to Seeger for years, but it wasn't until his recent death that I was able to put a name to his music. And what music! Seeger encapsulates a spectrum of emotions: the austere renditions of Where Have All The Flowers Gone? and The Bells Of Rhymney; the melodic rhythms of Wimoweh, Turn and Guantanamera; and not least, the strident simplicity of We Shall Overcome. Although the sound quality of some of the live recordings does not match that of the studio tracks, the album still makes excellent listening.

4.0 out of 5 stars A quirky novel, 23 Dec. 2013
This review is from: Mr Phillips (Paperback)
Like other reviewers, I caught on to John Lancaster after reading (and enjoying) Capital. Unlike Capital's main characters, Mr Phillips is neither portrayed as a hero or a villain, but as a rather inadequate character whose mind is preoccupied with sex and statistics.

Although the novel is introspective and largely mundane, it is lifted by some episodes, including a hilarious account of a Neighbourhood Watch meeting. The bank robbery scene on the other hand seemed to add little more than to a sense of drama to an otherwise slow plot.

Nevertheless, Mr Phillips retains interest in providing a perceptive insight to a flawed human character.

5.0 out of 5 stars Inspiring Ideas, 26 Oct. 2013
This book is packed with inspiring ideas. Themes are arranged on a monthly basis, although many are relevant to other seasons. The presentation is simple enough for 'point and shoot' photographers for follow, but also provides tips for those who wish to experiment with adjusting apertures, shutter speeds and colour balance. Never again will I see a shoot a mundane object without wondering "what can I do with that"!

The Mosquito Coast [DVD] [1986]
The Mosquito Coast [DVD] [1986]
Dvd ~ Andre Gregory
Price: £14.99

5.0 out of 5 stars Good adaptation, 8 July 2013
Having read the novel many years ago, I was pleased that this adaptation closely mirrors the book. Ford delivers a fine performance as a fanatical father who attempts to 'save' his family from the materialism of 1980s America, despite struggling with the obvious difficulties and discomforts of the rainforest. There are good supporting actors too, including Helen Mirren, who plays his loyal but disillusioned wife. Well worth another viewing.

4.0 out of 5 stars A useful compact guide, 22 Jun. 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This compact guide is useful for any beginner or intermediate naturalist. The illustrations and descriptions are informative, and include references to similar species to enable quick comparisons. Thumbnail maps are provided showing the distribution of each species within most of Europe, although these tend to be too small for those species that have a localised distribution. Apart from this minor point, I can recommend this guide.
