4.0 out of 5 stars Nice movie, 1 Dec 2006
This review is from: Maybe Baby [DVD] [2000] (DVD)
This might not be an actual masterpiece of movie history, but I think it is a lot nicer movie than some other commentators gave it credit for. It is nice feel-good romantic comedy and manages to raise some interesting issues while entertaining. Hugh Laurie is gorgeous, as always, and his acting is good, too. The female lead was annoying, but it was the way her role was written more than the actress (and there are people like that). Recommended for friends of romantic comedies for a solid 1,5 hour entertainment.

1.0 out of 5 stars Big disappointment, 30 Dec 2004
I have enjoyed several Scarpetta novels by Patricia Cornwell, and since I have been interested in the Ripper, I decided to pick up this. This was big diappointment, however.
Cornwell tries to show that Ripper was in fact artist Walter Sickert; some of the evidence is more or less convincing, some isn't. The biggest problem with the book wasn't the theory of Sickert as the murderer, however, but the presentation of the evindence. Cornwell seemed to have written everything she had in mind, without very clear cronology, often halting the story to move on to something completely different and then returning to another point of the Ripper story much later, after several excursions to Victorian society or the method investigations are nowadays conducted in the US. I would have really expected more from a experienced writer.
Also the bibliography left something to wish. It looks extensive at first glance, and many primary sources are listed, but the secondary literature is mostly about Victorian society, forensics, psychology... Only one or two of the titles really related to Jack the Ripper are listed. Since this book left me wanting to read also something else about Ripper, the bibliography wasn't too helpful for me.

5.0 out of 5 stars Another great work by Connie Willis, 18 Dec 2004
I have read several books and stories by Connie Willis, and she's become one of my favourite authors. This warm collection of Christmas stories was not disappointment, either, but everything you'd expect from Ms. Willis - romance, humour, mystery and also genuine Christmas spirit.
This book, like other works by her, has been labeled as "science fiction". But if you're looking for space travel and funny aliens, this probably is not the book for you :) This collection comes perhaps closer to magical realism than scifi, and I would suggest it for also larger audience, not only for scifi enthusiasts. The genre of these stories varies from comedy to romance, from English country manor mystery to story of religious epiphany. "Inn", church comedy with more serious undertone, and "Cat's Paw", English Christmas mystery, are probably my two favourites.
Warmly recommended. The Denver Post critic says in the back cover of the book, "When the holidays seem too stressful, pick up Miracle and Other Christmas Stories, slow down, read a few and remember what the holiday is all about", and I couldn't agree more.

3.0 out of 5 stars Great episode but disappointing extras, 10 Nov 2003
This DVD was a bit of a disappointment to me. Don't get me wrong - the episode, the famous Buffy musical, was great. Several of our favourite Buffy actors show their talents in singing and dancing, and the episode inclundes all the good stuff of Buffy: great characters, interesting relationships and funny dialogue.
But this DVD publication itself was a big disappointment. What I would have wanted would have been some extra material about the musical - at least making of and/or commentary track, but neither of them were included. There were only some trailers, and a short featurette of music in Buffy, which concentrated on bands playing in the Bronze during earlier seasons, and did not have any reference to the musical, probably because the featurette was made already before the musical.
Five stars to OMWF and one star to this package :)

4.0 out of 5 stars Great episode, 16 April 2003
Buffy is, IMO, a great show, and this musical episode is one the best episodes. Although the excuse for singing, yet another demon, is not very original, there are several actually important and very interesting plot points in the episode.
The songs are mostly good, and the actors make a great job singing. Highlights are the songs performed by Anthony Stewart Head (Giles) and especially Amber Benson (Tara), especially those two are talented singers.
