5.0 out of 5 stars Remarkable, 27 Feb 2014

Remarkable account of Russia's past viewed through the prism of the story of the Kremlin and Moscow. This, together with Natasha's Dance, is a must from anyone with an interest in Russian history and culture.

Big book this: I found the kindle edition an easier read.

Dull, dull dull and they look like "old socks" the moment you put them on. They also seem on the thin side. All this said they do seem to do the job and they don't really fall down. So that is a recommendation I guess. But these are not feet to be proud of, like the modern designs from M&S for example.

A little goes a long way. Expensive-smelling understated perfume. They've changed the description a couple of times but still the same cool squirty container.

Good solid case won't easily crush. Fits the smaller Seagate drives perfectly (but not the 1TB wireless plus device storage drive). Also space for the USB cable and more.

5.0 out of 5 stars OMG!, 24 Jan 2014

My nephew asked if maybe I wanted some proper photo editing software as a Christmas present, to replace the software which comes bundled with e.g. Canon Powershot and with Lumix. This has proved completely transformational. Not cheap maybe but worth every penny. You can rescue the most difficult shots and produce the most amazing results. It works best with RAW files so always try and shoot in RAW, but it does a surprisingly good job with old jpgs too. I've nothing but praise for this software: there are niggles but they are quite minor.

Lightroom is not always entirely intuitive but it does seem to be state of the art. If you are not familiar with this sort of software a manual is pretty much essential. As another reviewer mentions there are lots of YouTube clips out there telling you about the functions. However, I really need a manual. Scott Kelby is highly rated. I found his book useful to read through but I don't personally find it that useful as a reference book. There seems to be some very useful material from Lightroomqueen, including a table of shortcuts. With the table of shortcuts in front of you most of the functions can be managed once you have familiarised yourself with the general scheme.

Best tip for new users courtesy of Scott Kelby: He kicks off by advising that you should start by organising your files for Lightroom in a separate drive (or drives) and doing this before you begin. This is really valuable advice. Almost worth 5 stars and the price of his book on its own.

Suggestions for Lightroom designers: I know users should organise files for Lightroom in a separate drive from the start (see above). However, there are better software solutions out there for finding lost links to previous files. For example iTunes does this pretty well (and I'm not really an itunes fan - what a mess!). Also, some more thought could go into the designations of the shortcuts, which are hardly intuitive. Biggest shortcut annoyances: X = switch between portrait and landscape if you are in GRID, but it means UNSELECT if you are not in GRID. How dumb is that? Also, why doesn't increase/decrease exposure use arrow keys (like my TV remote) instead of the +/- keys, which are inconveniently placed on the keyboard. Actually all of the +/- adjustments ought to be linked to the arrow keys IMHO. Or at least have +/- actually on the sliders - as SilkyPics does.

Anyway, there you go: BUY THIS SOFTWARE: YOU WON'T REGRET IT! (provided you invest a little time in figuring out what it will do).

but a rather poor design. The adjustment is by means of a sliding bolt that you have to tighten. The desined was obviously unaware of simlper design solutions with an excentric disk instead of a slider

4.0 out of 5 stars A little slow, 24 Jan 2014

Good capacity but a little slow to transfer the full amount of what it will take. Also, to be hondest, I've never cared for the bendy design: it is hard to fit a carry ring to and it just gets in the way when you want to plug it in

3.0 out of 5 stars Not such a Scott Kelby fan, 24 Jan 2014
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
You will find a lot of reviews from the Scott Kelby fanclub rating this book very highly. I have both the hard copy and the Kindle version. I have read the book through twice now. I am completely new to Lightroom 5. He kicks off by advising that you should start by organising your files for Lightroom in a separate drive (or drives) and doing this before you begin. This is really valuable advice. Almost worth 5 stars on its own. However, downhill after that: the book is written in that jokey discursive American style which makes it hard to find anything when you actually need it (as opposed to just reading through). Also some of Scott's info on ALT shortcuts is incorrect for PC - possibly because he is a Mac user or this is an update from tips on earlier versions of Lightroom. So the book isn't that helpful when you are sitting in front of your first rubbish snap and you see the colour balance is wrong and the image is too dark: what do I do now? Whatever, what this book seriously lacks, and what I have found in practice more useful than the book day to day, is a table of Lightroom shortcuts. You can of course Google for this: try lightroomqueen. I have found that in editing a few sessions of shots the shortcut reminders are a lot more user-friendly than trying to edit with the book (or your Kindle) in front of you. Still, I've not tried any of the other textbooks so I can't compare. However, a shortcut table is an obvious omission. Also, a "what is this for" table would be super-helpful: Lightroom clearly has hidden depths that I don't really have the time or the patience to research and this book isn't going to get me there.

1.0 out of 5 stars Disappointing, 24 Jan 2014

According to other reviewers this is convenient and easy to clean. I found it fiddly to fill and really difficult to clean - you have to pull the end cap off and then use a skewer or something to clear the old tealeaves and even then there are some left stuck. I'm afraid it is back to the old teaball technology
