Updike
Updike
by Adam Begley
Edition: Paperback
Price: £9.98

5.0 out of 5 stars A must for all interested in the great author John Updike., 28 May 2015

This review is from: Updike (Paperback)
A simply superb biography. While Adam Begley clearly admires the work of John Updike, this is no hagiography. He is particularly perceptive on Updike's autobiographical literary style. The book is never pedestrian or dull and there is a wealth of personal detail not dealt with by Updike himself in his various memoirs. A must for all interested in the great author John Updike.

An easy, light, and enjoyably dirty confection. To be read solely for pleasure. Meades at his bizarre best. Dangerously funny.

Boy, is the reader expected to work hard! However, along with the byzantine complexities of the many characters and the plethora of picaresque sub-plots, is wonderful, outrageous, pitch black comedy. Have a good dictionary to hand.

3.0 out of 5 stars Lanark: Life in very long Four Books, 27 Aug. 2014

Reading it for a second time (who says masochism is on the decline), I found it just as annoying and opaque as the first time. The illustrations however, remain wonderful.

Slipstream: A Memoir
Slipstream: A Memoir
by Elizabeth Jane Howard
Edition: Paperback
Price: £8.99

4.0 out of 5 stars A fascinating insight into the life and loves of the beautiful novelist, Elizabeth Jane Howard., 27 April 2014

This review is from: Slipstream: A Memoir (Paperback)
A very interesting, frank and amusing autobiography revealing the lifestyle and mores of this upper middle-class author from her childhood in the 1930's; through the second world war and her first marriage to Peter Scott; to her post war success as a popular novelist and final marriage to Kingsley Amis from the mid 60s to the 80's. The torrent of name-dropping includes those of her many lovers and three husbands. In spite of her considerable success, privileged social position and undoubted attractiveness, she still comes across as a rather vulnerable and misunderstood woman not well-treated by many of the males attracted to her.

Excellent. Both informative and interesting. Only minor criticism is that more photographs would be have been welcome to illustrate the range of architecture,.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Terrific Read., 18 Sept. 2013

Tom F. Cunningham's work is not only detailed and scholarly, but funny, quirky and opinionated. He is also not afraid to debunk the many myths still associated with Buffalo Bill's Wild West Show.

4.0 out of 5 stars A pleasant dose of nostalgia, 18 Sept. 2013

Yes, it was all there as I remember it from my childhood - the Indian tribes, the cavalry, the frontiersmen, the covered wagons, the herds of bison. The illustrations by Dennis McLoughlin are very good. A pleasant and harmless dose of nostalgia.

4.0 out of 5 stars A tour de force by Kristin Scott Thomas, 28 Mar. 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This review is from: In Your Hands [DVD] (DVD)
In a two-handed piece like this, it is important that each actor has the ability to deliver their character's message with equal conviction.
It is truly unfortunate for Pio Marmai that he is exposed to a breath-taking performance from Kristin Scott Thomas which completely over-shadows his own very competent one. It is impossible to take ones eyes off of Scott Thomas. Her performance is almost flawless
and is completely convincing. It lifts this small and rather hackneyed story of revenge to a higher level.
