Throw in a bit of electronica, heaps of alt-country and some indie you've got this record. It's exactly as though Beck and Neil Young decided to get together to make a record after kicking back to some Can. This is a real hidden gem.

I can't do that much better than the earlier review of this but just want to back up the positive view of this record! I have been hooked on it since I managed to get a copy of it a few weeks ago. Excellent, excellent work. It's the sort of album you wish Scott Walker would make.

I love his voice, the arrangements and thought that goes into tracks like 'Voyage of Bran' (see Irish mythology for the full details on the background to that one!) and 'Archangel'. It takes a lot to out do a Tim Buckley original but 'I must have been blind' does just that.

This is a really rather beautiful and highly intelligent record. Dark, brooding but very struck through with a rich seam of melody and intent. Just a very good record.

Drummer makes good album shocker. My art-house/semi electronica album of 2007. There are a lot of neat little tricks going on here and Mr Jansen has learnt how to sample on the front edge of the genre with some assistance from his brother, Mr Sylvian. There are some excellent vocal performances on here from the likes of Nina Kinert, Anja Garbarek and Thomas Feiner (the latter sounding like a disgruntled Tom Waits) and the album also has some glorious instrumental tracks.

My one complaint is that there are a couple of tracks in the middle that have obviously been taken from last years `Nine Horses' sessions and it shows, otherwise this is very impressive work.

Interestingly I have had some quite extreme reactions from some of the people who I have spoken to about this record. I think it never helps when a band gets well known via an over-played advert (Intel used `Ice Cream' for one of their adverts) but I really rate this record. For a change I actually think the more interesting tracks are at the end of the record then the start where they break away from the Blondie, nu-wave type sound.

NYPC produce some nice neat songs and clearly have listened to a lot of different sources to produce modern smart pop. They remind me a little of a cleaner sounding CSS. I believe their live performances can leave a little to be desired. We shall see.

4.0 out of 5 stars Glittering Whispered Beauty, 25 Jan 2008

A glittering treat of a record in amongst some of the mud of the year. Not at all what I expected when I bought it. I thought they were a one off electronica outfit in the style of `Squarepusher'. Nope, this is a big sound glam, electro thing, covered in whispered vocals with obvious nods to MBV and Spacemen 3. Check out `You don't know her name' and `Elouise' for some great melodies. The record is a bit front-loaded but overall it's got some outstanding tracks on and deserved to be short-listed for the Mercury Prize.

Ah yes, this is my `alternative' American indie rock album of the 2007. Silversun Pickups come from Los Angeles and have delivered the best guitar noise album of the year by miles. Like a more melodic and less annoying `Smashing Pumpkins', Carnavas is a great record. It's very powerful, kicks some dust and actually has something to say.

King Creosote is the name used by Scot, Kenny Anderson. According to his MySpace site he seems to have released up to 24 albums worth of material. Anyway, this was a huge slow grower of a record for me. The songs are focused around the accordion and guitar and get right under your skin with their beautiful melodies and understated lyrics and hooks.

It's hard to classify really. Is it folk? Not really? Rock? Nope. Just good song writing that dares to be different and that is always a welcome thing in my book.

One of the most consistently interesting of all the 1990's dance acts to have endured this long. They have steadily moved on to become genre defying with their, internet only, river-run project a couple of years back and the beautiful soundtrack to `Breaking and Entering' last year.

The new album is a return to what they do best, a flow of consciousness musical barrage filled with snap shot pictures of the UK and the huge landscapes or modern urban scenes and the people who live in them. Listen to the `blue collar' rap of `Ring Road' or the lush landscape of `Best Mamgu Ever' and you'll hear Underworld doing what they do best....plugging into everyone's subconscious hopes and fears and putting them into music.

5.0 out of 5 stars One of Underworlds Finest, 16 Oct 2007

Underworld have proved to be one of the most enduring and interesting electro-orientated outfits over the last 20 years or so. The soundtrack to 'Breaking and Entering' released earlier this year stands out as one of the most hypnotically beautiful soundtracks ever released, alongside the intriguing and embracing download releases from their own website.

Oblivion with Bells is a return to a more febrile musical state with a mix of upbeat danceable tracks, subliminal hypnotic grooves (but don't be fooled, the lyrics may be oblique but they hit the targets intended!) and straight forward ambient pieces of music which are fantastic.

I can't really add much more to the detailed track description given on the earlier review posted on this site but would like to reiterate that this is one of the best releases across any musical genre this year. Underworld are very intelligent, thought inducing, subtle and highly commercial. A truly rare mix.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent Goldfrappian style Electro Pop, 16 Oct 2007
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This review is from: Overpowered (Audio CD)
This is just a fantastic piece of soulful pop and electro disco. The one thing 2007 has really missed is an album of classic pop. Well it has arrived in style and if you like Goldfrapp, Kylie and the retro-electro disco pop of the likes of Cerrone from the 70's, then you will love this record.

Roisin Murphy is a true eccentric with some..er...interesting clothing tastes (she looks like one of 'Zig and Zag' on the album cover) but she is also extremely talented and has produced a piece of magic here. Classic stuff.
