Best android phone I've ever owned, but not perfect, 15 Dec 2013
Two part review. It will be a long one so bare with me. This is not an amazon verified purchase, I bought direct from Google for £299 and got it the day it was released.
Part one before Android 4.4.2 update, Part two after update.
Part one. (Android v 4.4)
I will start with the main problem first to get that out of the way and that is the camera. Its a very good camera it takes really good quality photos, very good quality video and the mic is one of the best I have ever heard on a phone. However the issue if with its focusing, it takes forever to focus and take a picture, by the time its done the subject has either fallen asleep or gone (due to boredom of waiting). Then when you finally take a picture it has to re-focus again to take the same shot of the same subject. It is quite annoying and really spoils the camera experience. Also the new way of changing settings on the camera is quite irritating as well. You have slide your finger up the screen, then move it left or right to select an option. It really sucks because if your in a hurry to take a photo and the settings are a bit off, its a real faff to get them selected. Also I don't seem to able to zoom in HDR mode.
Also the battery life is not that great either, but neither are most other phones with the same spec as this one. Also the phones WiFi connection has been a bit hit and miss (its not my WiFi as my computer doesn't have this issue)
But hopefully Google will fix these issues in the next update.
Now for the good points.
The screen is amazing, its my first phone with a full 1080p and I have to say its amazing (I know some phones are better, but to me its amazing), thats because my last phone only had half the amount of pixels at a much lower resolution. So for me its makes a massive difference. Watching films is pretty great to on the fairly large display. The colours are really nice, not over saturated or too pale, but very nice. The Blacks are fairly good to and the Whites don't have that awful yellow tinge either.
The next good point is the performance. This is the most powerful phone I have ever had and its amazing it multitasks with ease, opens apps very quickly, runs games and videos very smoothly, the internet browsing is fantastic and the everyday functionality is great to.
The interface although not that difference to the previous version has had a few tweaks as well, there is some subtle differences and the UI is much cleaner and looks probably the nicest version of Android yet.
I like that they have switched from blue to white (however some parts haven't changed and remained blue) but that no deal breaker (and hopefully the next raft of updates will fix it)
Now for the phone itself its very well made, I like the white coloured speaker on this version. The buttons are very well placed and are easy to access when holding in one hand (and I don't have the largest of hands), the phone sits really nice in your and its not too heavy either which makes using it even better. The back plate feels very sturdy and it doesn't slip out my hand very easily. Although with it being white I thought that the dye from my jeans might stain it so I bought a case to prevent that from happening (SPIGEN Google Nexus 5 Case Slim [Ultra Fit] [Smooth White] Premium Matte Hard Case for Nexus 5 - Smooth White
. Its a really good case and doesn't add too much weight or width to the phone.
Android 4.4.2 update
So the new update has been installed on my phone as of the 11/12/2013. And it hasn't sorted the colouring issue (but that's not a major problem) but luckily the camera has been fixed. (Yeah!!) The camera now focuses quickly ans stays focused even after a photo has been taken. You can now take photos quickly without having to wait. Also you can now zoom in HDR mode which is handy as it produces better colours than on normal mode. Also the camera now takes more accurate photos (in terms of colour reproduction)and the update have just massively improved the camera. However they have kept the annoying settings selector (but I suppose not every hates it), but now after longer use I still don't like it but I can use it much better.
Oh and the update has sorted out the dodgy WiFi connection issues, it connects really quickly and stays connected as well.
The update has really improved the phone massively and hopefully because its a nexus device it will get the next android update before most other phones.
Overall I would day that the original score of four stars has been improved to 4.5 stars. There is still some things that bug me, but putting them aside it is a cracking phone and cheaper than a lot of similarly specced phones.
