1.0 out of 5 stars Embarrassing errors - there is no death penalty in South Africa, 24 May 2012
A major part of the plot of this novel hinges on a character being on death row in South Africa. The novel ends with the main character learning that the execution - which he could have stopped - will go ahead.

However, there is no death penalty in South Africa - not now, and not when the book was written and set.

If an author is going to research a country so poorly that he doesn't even know whether there is a death penalty - let alone what police procedures are like - how can we trust anything he writes? I understand this is a work of fiction, but it's only effective when we can believe in it.

Nesbo didn't even do the most basic Wikipedia or Google research for this formulaic hack job. What's even worse, though, is that none of the proof readers have picked it up either. The book has been translated into numerous languages and republished many times by big publishing houses - don't any of them fact check to avoid embarrassing basic errors like this?

4.0 out of 5 stars Good value, 15 April 2012

This is a fantastic recording for a good price. The only problem is that the tracks are .wav files with no metadata (tags). This means you can't burn it to listen to on an mp3 player unless you're prepared to spend time writing lengthy tags in German. Great for long car journeys, though.

How To Be a Woman
How To Be a Woman

4.0 out of 5 stars Great book - men should read it too, 8 Dec. 2011
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This review is from: How To Be a Woman (Paperback)
Male here - I absolutely loved this book. I don't agree with Moran's position on everything, but she gives a very lucid, funny and sexy perspective on contemporary feminism. I had rather gone off feminism recently as many feminists I came across seemed dull, self-righteous and judgemental.

Men should read it to get an insight into the issues facing women - they won't feel lectured by it, but instead understand women better and hopefully be more inspired to support the women in their lives.

Moran criticises women's behaviour as well as men's, and shows how we'd all be a lot better off without patriarchy.

Light, funny, not at all preachy, but still quite profound.

A Banishing Ritual
A Banishing Ritual

5.0 out of 5 stars Beautiful ritual doom metal, 15 Oct. 2011
This review is from: A Banishing Ritual (Audio CD)
Technically, this is doom metal. But really it's a series of sound scapes using doom metal elements to create an intense ambience and sense of shamanistic ritual. It's powerfully beautiful.

Magical Marxism: Subversive Politics and the Imagination (Marxism and Culture)

5.0 out of 5 stars Inspiring re-reading of the Marxist tradition, 1 Aug. 2011
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
Merrifield takes Sorel's observation that people are not inspired by dry analysis but by living movements, and attempts to find a Marxist spirit that is both ephemeral and resilient. Politically he draws some of the same conclusions as John Holloway - that liberation can be found in the "cracks" in the system, but he presents them in a way that is life-affirming and non-prescriptive.

He also provides valuable commentary on The Invisible Committee's "The Coming Insurrection", which he regards as our generation's "Society of the Spectacle".

5.0 out of 5 stars Powerful, beautiful, 9 May 2011
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This review is from: Jex Thoth (Audio CD)
I agree with the reviews above. This broadly fits into the stoner metal/psychedelic rock genre, and I've been listening to a lot of that lately, but this is in a league of its own. Jessica Toth's witchy vocals go really well with the powerful chords. I have played this to death over the past few weeks, and I still love it. Best comparison is kind of a contemporary Jefferson Airplane.

Also worth checking out is Jessica's gnostic project Sabbath Assembly.

4.0 out of 5 stars Excellent dissects the world we live in, 27 Mar. 2010
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This is a short book, more of a pamphlet, but it is extremely insightful and well-written. Mark Fisher describes the world we live in very accurately, and inspires you to deepen you understanding.

What's missing is any detailed way to get out of the mess we're in.

5.0 out of 5 stars Works perfectly, 9 Mar. 2009

No complaints at all. This arrived very quickly, and worked perfectly as soon as I put it in my Linux machine. I am really impressed to get so much storage at such a good price, and the device is really handy as I am able to back up huge amounts of data and carry it with me.
