4.0 out of 5 stars Innovative and Enjoyable Film, 9 Dec 2012

Having read some really positive reviews of this film through Empire magazine, I was keen to watch it. While I admit to being one of the few people left not to have seen 'Blair Witch Project' or many of the other subsequent 'found footage' films which were rush released to cash in on this genre, I think this film should actually be viewed simply as a film rather than as part of a genre.

In this case the film is shot through the camera of a young, lonely high school boy who with his cousin and a friend make a discovery which changes all of their lives and their understanding of human capabilities.

The film worked on two levels for me, the development of the main character, Andrew (Dane DeHaan) as a smart, introverted young man who feels outside of society's boundaries helps us to really understand his behaviour as the film develops, he tries to integrate but after being pushed away again he reacts, secondly the concept of normal people developing telekinetic powers is handled brilliantly, the effects are excellent and the film is visually brilliant, I can't remember the last time I lost myself so easily in a film concept.

Whilst the ending is slightly weak, the character development is interesting and this is a step above most teen films i've seen. I found this interesting, innovative and the three main actors are all excellent, i'd recommend this to anyone who loves indie films or sci-fi, just don't go into it expecting a found footage film, it's simply a film told from the point of view of one particular character.

3.0 out of 5 stars A regression from Fifa 12, 9 Dec 2012
= Fun:3.0 out of 5 stars
This review is from: FIFA 13 (Xbox 360) (Video Game)
I have to admit to being one of the foolish people who buy the Fifa game every year hoping for incredible developments of what is already a very good game, unfortunately Fifa 13 leaves a lot to be desired and I would suggest is actually a regression from Fifa 12.

Playing in career mode I have found that after playing one season, I start to play the second season and matches start without a visible ball, this makes the game random and really does test your skill levels but is a massive bug which a huge company like EA should have found and eradicated prior to release rather than allowing this game to be released in this manner.

There are varying other bugs with the game, which have mostly removed any enjoyment of the game.

While the game itself is enjoyable and there are lots of little touches added from Fifa 12 (improved defending, crowd movement, visible substitutes and manager), these really aren't enough to justify its continued release initially at £40.

This game reminds me very much of what happened with the Fight Night series where the developers found that after a while their 'improvements' actually began to be to the detriment of the game and it lost some popularity and credibility. I think Fifa 13 has taken a big hit to it's credibility and i'm disappointed EA haven't been more front footed in admitting this.

I also own PES 13 and whilst generally preferring Fifa over the last few years, I now play this game more often as it doesn't have game changing bugs and it's improvements actually enhance the game rather than make it simply more visually realistic.

I think EA need to have a good think about what they want from the Fifa franchise in the future, if the plan is to rush release games to maximise profits from online games pre-Christmas then they should be honest, if they want to enhance and improve what was an outstanding game, then they should take their time and do this rather than adding superficial window dressing and not concentrating on problems with the gameplay.

Overall, i'd recommend purchasing Fifa 12 at a snip of the cost as it provides very similar gameplay and options but doesn't fall foul of awful bugs which limit any longevity of this game.

4.0 out of 5 stars Beautiful film, 17 Oct 2010
This review is from: A Single Man [Blu-ray] (Blu-ray)
Films about suicide are rarely life affirming, however this film is something that will make you consider your own life and how lucky you are.

It is a beautiful film, shot in a considered and mature style by Tom Ford in an excellent directorial debut, it is a 90 minute long piece based on the Christopher Isherwood book.

Starring Colin Firth as Professor George Falconer, it follows him on a day when he considers the death of his beloved partner and decides to end his own life to be with him. However events conspire against him, as small thinks make him realise how precious our lives are.

The film has an exceptional lead in Firth who deserves utter praise for his gripping portrayal of the character, both heart breaking and motivating in one go, this is his finest film performance bar none and the film is brilliantly shot with evocative music and performances from Firth and Julianne Moore especially that make this fictional tale feel incredibly raw and emotional.

A beautiful film with an interesting message, i'd thoroughly recommend this film.

4.0 out of 5 stars Weird and wonderful, 17 Oct 2010

Item arrived quickly, its a film which i would imagine is either loved or hated, by Michel Gondry starring Gael Garcia Bernal it follows a young man who prefers his dreams to his waking life and gets lost in them, it is funny, brilliantly imaginative and has a lo-fi quality that really worked for me, I found it a lovely off-kilter romance which I go back to whenever I want to smile or lose myself for a few hours.

4.0 out of 5 stars To Love is a blessing, 16 Oct 2010

This is a beautiful book, it is the written love notes of great men to their partners, it is filled with inspiration, true elegance and a real sense of how people used to be able to communicate more prosaically through the written word.

I bought this as a gift to remind myself what love is, it is inspiring and beautfully presented and well worth a read for hopeless romantics and anybody who has ever been in love, or is in love.

Basically bought this as a gift for my Star Wars obsessed partner, its a Mr Potato Head in a Storm-Trooper mask, thats it really, possibly good for kids or Star Wars officiados who want to play out a root vegetable based version of Empire Strikes Back, otherwise, fairly pointless, fragile and probably only for fanboys.

I bought this DVD expecting a Michael Bay super-productions (i.e, lots of explosions and very little substance), in some ways I wasn't surprised but in others I felt he really brought to life the Transformers and fitted in a reasonably good story between chases fights and explosions.

The film is fast paced, action packed and full of incident, the script perhaps lets it down a bit, but if you like Transformers and big explosions this is a good film for you. It is a good price, with plenty of added extras and well worth a look.
