Crucial Conversations: Tools for Talking When Stakes are High
Crucial Conversations: Tools for Talking When Stakes are High
by Kerry Patterson
Edition: Paperback

5.0 out of 5 stars Superb assistance in saying what you mean, kindly., 10 Aug. 2014

Utterly terrific - i read a lot of books on communication and am rarely to be found scribbling furiously in the margins. More than that i actually began to practice the tools immediately after reading. this book will help you if you sometimes say things in the wrong way or find that your tone stops you being heard. it has already made a huge difference for me in my personal and professional lives. In both contexts i have meant well but not conveyed that - this book will teach you how. wonderfully written, practical and elegant i am a big fan.

Quiet: The power of introverts in a world that can't stop talking
Quiet: The power of introverts in a world that can't stop talking

2.0 out of 5 stars Disappointing, naive and a touch silly, 10 Aug. 2014
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
Susan Cain certainly writes well, and as a trainer and coach i was very interested to hear her insights on introversion. i work with lots of technical specialists, who do seem more likely to have an introverted disposition and as as someone who identifies as an extrovert and has a very 'quiet' partner, I thought it would be useful to find out more.

The trouble with this book is the black and white thinking around both camps. Someone who continues to invest his life savings in a gamble on the stock market, repeatedly making the same mistake on a bad assessment of the risks is not guilty of this BECAUSE he is an extrovert. He is guilty of this because he is a fool. Besides, as the other half points out- "Where was his wife in all this?" I think an example of a person gambling your life savings away repeatedly that surmises that his behaviour is because as an extrovert and doesn't pause to learn from his mistakes is insulting to half the population - just because i like to talk and get stimulus from the outside world, doesn't mean i can't stop to think and draw sensible conclusions.

This kind of naive conclusion making continues throughout the book and is, I think unhelpful. I know plenty of introverts who are impulsive, vulnerable addicts and I know plenty of extroverts who are risk averse, thoughtful and strategic in their approach. I was sorry to be so disappointed by this book as I was looking for some inspired insight into my delicate brethren and instead received a perjorative view of extroverts and a 'rose tinted' specs look at introverts.

Even the definition of introversion an extroversion is not agreed and explicit in this book, which you would think given the topic, would be covered in detail. It reminds me of the blue eyes/brown eyes experiments where a group of kids were told that one was better than the other and reacted accordingly. I DO agree that the world listens less well to the quiet voices and would benefit enormously from doing so, but i am afraid Susan Cain will not provide you with a methodology for moving this particular needle.

Wheat Belly: Lose the Wheat, Lose the Weight and Find Your Path Back to Health
Wheat Belly: Lose the Wheat, Lose the Weight and Find Your Path Back to Health
by William, MD Davis
Edition: Paperback

4.0 out of 5 stars Not new but useful., 5 Aug. 2014
This is a really well written book and inspiring too. The only thing I would say is that for about 20 years, Food Addicts ( 12 step group) have had a programme of 'no flour, no sugar' so it is not really NEW information, just packaged by a credible opinion former in an easily digestible ( no pun intended) fashion.

This review is from: Square Metre Gardening (Paperback)
as a newbie to gardening this book is a great manageable introduction to the principles of square metre gardening. I llike the style of writing - friendly and approachable and the clear illustrations. I gave up on square metre gardening simply because slugs ate everything so I discovered I needed a larger patch but the principles are sound.
