4.0 out of 5 stars Thought-provoking, and beautifully written., 21 Jun 2011
This review is from: Never Let Me Go (Paperback)
This is a challenging book. The tone is wistful, but not sad. The present is recognisable but twisted. The story draws you in, becoming increasingly disturbing as the strange truth is revealed.

Not a light-hearted read, but a rewarding one.

1.0 out of 5 stars Awful book. Don't be taken in by the hype - it's just that!, 21 Jun 2011
This review is from: The Slap (Paperback)
Don't understand why this book has achieved fame. The story is weak, too long (goes on well beyond the point at which the original premise has been resolved) and lacks a single appealing character. The language seems meant to be deliberately shocking, but actually comes across as grotesque and pointlessly vulgar. An old fashioned word perhaps, but it does sum it up.

Don't bother.

Miss McKirdy's Daughters Will Now Dance the Highland Fling
Miss McKirdy's Daughters Will Now Dance the Highland Fling
by Barbara Kinghorn
Edition: Paperback

1.0 out of 5 stars Dreadful, self indulgent book!, 31 Dec 2010
Absolutely awful book, depicting spoiled, self indulgent people making a mess of their lives and blaming / living off others. The only thing going for it is the catchy title, which was the reason for purchase. Avoid!

5.0 out of 5 stars This is a classic film, depicting a significant event in history, now in glorious HD, 31 Dec 2010
A vintage film that (almost) all of us have seen already, refreshed by being released in blu-ray definition. Picture quality is excellent, sound is fine, and the film itself has definitely stood the test of time. Well worth the investment if you are a fan, and worth consideration if you are not!

2.0 out of 5 stars Some good suggestions, but key info for hotels - price! - not obvious., 7 Sep 2010
I bought this book thinking to add to my reference material on good places to stay around Britain. No such luck!

There are some interesting entries, and the descriptions are okay, but the costs are hidden away at the back of the book, not with the main entries. I'd looked most of them up (very boring!) on the web before I realised. And some of them really are too well known to class as "interesting".

Overall, I'd recommend spending the time on the internet and using Tripadvisor rather than investing in this one.
