5.0 out of 5 stars Another smasher., 26 Feb 2014

This is a love story without the slush, written sympathetically by a superb story-teller. The situations are real, as are the characters. You can see the surroundings, hear the people speak and fear for what happens next. Marvellous!

This novel ios full of real characters, who live and breathe before your eyes. There is a mystery at the heart of the book, which is revealed tiny bit by tiny bit, with the maximum of suspense that never dies away. the plot is subtle and powerful, and the writing creates a real atmosphere of truth, lies and obfuscation.

This is another cracker from Alexander McCall Smith, set on a train, with wonderful storylines and believable characters. I found it impossible to put down, so much so that I was reading faster and faster so that I could go out for a walk. Do not miss this one.

Good, workmanlike (workwomanlike?) bags, priced fairly. They are easonably difficult to come by, so I was pleased to find them.

We saw this film in Amsterdam, with Dutch subtitles, so it was a relief to find out what the Italian bits meant, as my Italian is quite elementary. The film is fab, with outstanding acting and gorgeous scenery. The plot has unexpected turns, and mysterious byways. Of course, you have to ignore Woody Allen playing Woody Allen, but the rest of the cast make up for his attempts at acting. This is a lovely, funny and quite emotional film.

Marvellous! Another spiffing novel from the master himself, although this one was rather dark, in contrast to the earlier stories. I was quite worried about Isobel here, placed in a somewhat dicier situation than usual. I worry about her marriage also. Is it still as strong as it was? Jamie seems to be tiring of her adventures, possibly. I hope not; theirs seems to be a perfect partnership, especially in view of the wonderful job they are doing with their little one. Having said that, they were quite brave to tackle Grace on the question of maths for the baby. I quite thought that she would leave them flat. Is this a preparation for her farewell? You can see that the characters in this book, and indeed in all Alexander Mc Call Smith's books, come alive in the reading, and have what feels like a real existence.

Alexander McCall Smith writes again. This novel is full of beautifully drawn characters who have a life of their own. One can see them and hear the way they speak. They are so real that, for example, one's blood pressure rises on reading about Irene's treatment of that poor little boy, Bertie. One feels as if the characters were old friends whom One would recognise in the street. This is a relaxed and dreamy book, with a few surprises on the way to a believable but not quite tidy ending. I thoroughly enjoyed this latest and was quite cross when I had finished it. Another, please, and quickly.

I love Stuart Maconie's writing; it is intelligent, intellectual, articulate and very, very funny. I like the way he spares not the idiocies of the present day, the "dribbling" television programmes, the culture of unmerited celebrity and the generally weary folk he meets. This book is a fantastic ramble through history, geography and his own subject of sociology.Be warned, though; this author can reduce you to tears.
