5.0 out of 5 stars Skechers delivers yet again!, 31 Oct 2013

Comfortable and good-looking shoes from my new favourite brand, Skechers. I use them when travelling to and from work where a daily 2 km walk from the bus-stop is involved, and I feel no rubbing whatsoever which I usually do with newer shoes. The quality itself is, as usual, outstanding with a leathery finish making them quite resistant to water (but not water proof!). The inner sole made of memory foam does its work to make them even more comfortable. Size is what it says, I'm a 10 and the fit perfectly.

Highly recommended!

5.0 out of 5 stars A classic finally arrives on Blu-Ray (the release which this review is about)!, 31 Aug 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
Since most of you know the basic plot of the movie I'll skip the description and just say it's a classic definitely worthy a spot in everyones movie collection.

Regarding the 40th anniversary Blu-Ray release, Disney has made a really good job restoring it. Sharpness is good, colours are well saturated without exaggeration and the sound is gently pushed from its original mono track to 5.1, even though the surround channels are rarely used. In some scenes they make smart use of the subwoofer which creates an extra punch and adds to the atmosphere. For those of you expecting a Diamond Edition makeover, I say be warned because even though it's a good release it doesn't reach that high quality.

Highly recommended!

4.0 out of 5 stars Zombie-slaying extravaganza!, 8 Aug 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
A botched attempt to steal a very powerful virus sets of the automatic defences in a top secret underground facility known as The Hive, locking all employees inside. Directly above, Alice wakes up in a shower not knowing where she is or even who she is. Upon searching her room she finds, hidden in a locked drawer, guns, and lots of them. A few moments later she stumbles upon a tactical response team on a secret mission into The Hive to dispatch of the Red Queen...

For a videogame-based movie, I must say I like it. I remember the first time I saw it I felt real skeptical because of the catastrophic attempt of videogame adaptations like Street Fighter, Super Mario Bros and others. The acting is good, at least compared to other action movies, and the special effects are overall also good. Being a zombie movie it contains a surprisingly small amount of blood and gore to which you get an explanation though, which makes it more interesting and thought through (the blood has coagulated in the undead bodies, ergo they don't bleed in the normal sense).

The release was better than average, a big step up from the DVD, with sharp and crisp picture throughout and intense colours.

3 / 5 stars

Continues directly after the first one where Alice once again wakes up not quite knowing where she is. After exiting the hospital she finds herself back in Raccoon City where the dead walks the streets...

This sequel was a bit of a letdown. First of all the director tries too hard to make it look like the video game, with all from how the characters move to how they are dressed. This is particularily apparent in the case of Jill Valentine. Sure, it's fun to recognize a character from the game in the movie, but lines have to be drawn somewhere, and I think they crossed it by a mile. What works in a game may not work in a movie. I also thought the acting was below par. In some scenes I could almost feel how silly the actors felt, especially Ms. Guillory. On the plus side was the special effects which were way better than the first with much less apparent CGI.

The picture was sharp, nice saturated colours with very little grain. Only problem was with the sound which was prone to distort during loud scenes. The recording volume seemed to be a bit on the high side, and the difference between the lows and the highs were quite extreme. Not a big problem but anyway.

2 / 5 stars

Five years after the Racoon City incident, the T-virus has spread around the world and humanity is on the verge of extinction. The only way of surviving is by constantly moving from place to place to avoid the undead. A small band of survivors, led by Claire Redfield, choose to make for Alaska where supposedly the virus hasn't reached yet...

My favourite so far, better than both its predecessors. The special effects are better, the acton scenes more intense and the gunfights seem more realistic. And this time, when the zombies are shot there is blood, and quite alot too. It also felt as if the actors did a better job, especially Ali Larter who is a bit out of her element portraying a tough survivor.

Regarding the release it was also excellent, best of the three first, and nicely balanced sound with great space and dynamics.

4 / 5 stars

Another seven years later, Alice decides to take action against Umbrella in Japan, bringing her clones that she discovered in Extinction to help out. After all, one Alice is bad enough, and letting them fight 30 or more is truly devastating! Wesker escapes in an airplane, with the original Alice on board, but just when she is about to end his evil reign he sticks her with a syringe containing an antidote which strips away her special powers. Helpless against him without them she tries one last desperate thing...

Paul W.S. Anderson is back in the directors chair for this sequel, both for the better and for the worse I think. He has a thing for slow-motion action sequences, a bit like Zak Snyder, and usually I think it's OK to use it in a small amount but I felt that certain scenes in this movie looked like they'd been copied from The Matrix. No new thinking at all which is a shame, as Anderson is most of the time an accomplished moviemaker. Apart from that, it's an entertaining 90 minutes with more gore than the previous ones and also, so far, the best special effects. In my opionion this is as good as the first movie.

This was also the best release of them all, slightly better even than Extinction, with a really good surround mix, crisp picture and well-saturated colours.

3 / 5 stars

All in all, I recommend it to fans of sci-fi action movies and considering its price, just buy it!

4.0 out of 5 stars Get ready for an adventure of historic proportions!, 15 July 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
An unsuccessful and unemployed inventor takes a job as a night guard in The Natural Museum of History, simply because it's the only job he can get and that he needs a job to keep his apartment and the shared custody of his son. How hard can it be guarding old, dusty skeletons and puppets? In this museum, where the tablet of Ahkmenrah also is housed, apparently a lot more difficult than it may seem...

Two great movies that contain both action and laughs, which can be enjoyed by children and adults alike.

Ben Stiller does a great job, as always, portraying Larry Daley and Robin Williams gives an excellent performance as Theodore Roosevelt. And in The Battle of the Smithsonian Hank Azaria is hillarious as the evil brother of Ahkmenrah, Kahmunrah!

Regarding the releases, the video was somewhat blurry and really grainy at times, but the audio was really good. If you already own them on DVD save your money, it's not worth the upgrade.

4.0 out of 5 stars Better than average fantasy action., 5 July 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
Most of us know the story of Hansel & Gretel who escapes the clutches of an evil witch in her gingerbreadhouse by pushing her into the fire. But what happens next?

Apparently they become professional witch hunters and are celebrated as heroes throughout Europe, vanquishing covens all over. When being hired by the mayor of a small town to track down a witch responsible for the abduction of eleven of their children, they stumble upon an evil that may be too powerful even for them...

If you like easy-to-watch action I think you'll like it. To me it felt a bit like Sleepy Hollow and Brothers Grimm, and even A Knights Tale, with the mix of medieval setting and modern-like weapons. Add to this some martial arts fighting between the lead characters and the witches, a troll crushing heads and swinging branches as big as a small tree, you have Hansel & Gretel in a nutshell!

For those of you who likes gore you'll be satisfied without a doubt. Not the splatter-movie amount, thankfully, but enough to make a point. I particularily liked the use of "real" blood and guts and no CGI-blood which seems to have become a trend in many action movies of late. Also the makeup effects were stunning and instead of using computers all the time they used it only when necessary which gave the movie a more gritty feel, in a positive way.

Renner and Arterton both did a good job portraying the two hunters. Peter Stormare convinced as the overzealous and sadistic sheriff, kind of like his role in Brothers Grimm, only evil. Famke Janssen also delivers a solid performance.

The Blu-Ray release was really good and sharp with some grain, which I think was added for a more filmlike look. The Dolby TrueHD soundtrack worked good as well with a lot of use of the surround speakers and a clear dialogue from the center.

Recommended to all who likes to be entertained for an hour and a half with fast-paced, gory, medieval fantasy action!

5.0 out of 5 stars Cute handbag for everyday use!, 26 Jun 2013

Bought this for my wife and this is what she thinks of it:

Great quality fabric, nice colours on the owls and lots of room for all the necessary everyday things you want in your bag. I've gotten a lot of both Facebook-likes and spontaneous comments on the street about how good it looks. This is a true 5-star product, I really love it!

4.0 out of 5 stars Arnie is back!, 6 Jun 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
I have to admit, I did have some fears that Arnold's acting days were over but this film proved me wrong. He can still look as cool and menacing as he did 30 years ago which is really impressive and a thing that can't be said about most of the other actors his age with a career that long. But, enough about the big guy!

The movie is basically about a drug cartel boss escaping from FBI custody on his way to death row, wreaking havoc in his custom 1000 horsepower Corvette on his way to Mexico and freedom. The only ones standing in his way is a small-town sheriff and his three deputies, a gun collector and a former marine.

It feels as a good-old action movie from the 80s and 90s, equally gory and filled with gratuitous bad language throughout. The action itself is fast paced, the car chase scenes are as good as they come and the acting overall is above standard. Arnold feels a little rusty but loosens up as the movie progresses. The obligatory fight scene at the end is fun to watch, and this is the only scene where I got the feeling that Arnie is indeed back!

In a perfect world I would have wished for some more gunfights, especially with the good-old Vickers, and a bit more screentime with Arnold, but otherwise I liked it alot and recommend it to anyone who enjoys old-school action movies.

Regarding the release itself, the picture is sharp and clean with little or no noise even in the darker scenes. The 7.1 soundtrack is awesome with distinct separation of the channels and the dialogue is easily audible over all the sound effects.

5.0 out of 5 stars A must-have for all Star Wars lovers!, 28 May 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
The only minor drawback is the size, which can be a good thing if you're looking for a small bag, but I would've prefered it to be a bit bigger. Read the measurements before ordering it to see if it suits your needs. It's big enough for a 13.3" Ultrabook/MacBook Air (I know, it's not a laptop bag but hey, it's got the original Star Wars logo on it!).

I recommend it to all of you out there wanting to pay a tribute to perhaps the greatest movie trilogy ever made!

*Update*: Keep the bag dry! I recently got caught in a rainstorm and the bag got a little wet, far from soaking as I had a small umbrella with me and tried to keep it out of the rain but still the print on it is now a bit bubbly and uneven. Not a big thing perhaps but it doesn't look as good anymore. Rating in terms of quality would be *** out of *****.

5.0 out of 5 stars Comfy!, 21 May 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
Without a doubt one of the most comfortable pair I've ever owned! Had them on every day during my recent vacation in London, and even after walking all the way from Swiss Cottage to central Westminster, via St John's Wood, Regents Park, Baker Street, Bayswater, Kensington Gardens and Hyde Park, Green Park and back again, my feet still didn't hurt one bit. Regarding the size they feel like they are just the size advertised, I bought a 10 and they feel, well just like a 10 and not smaller like some other shoes from Skechers.

Highly recommended!
