Appropriate Adult [DVD] [2011]
Appropriate Adult [DVD] [2011]
Dvd ~ Dominic West
Price: £7.20

5.0 out of 5 stars A difficult topic, handled very well, 6 Feb. 2015
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
Given the subject matter, some people may initially be reluctant to watch this film, I was a bit apprehensive myself at first as I am quite squeamish but I needn't have worried. The whole film is done very tactfully and tastefully, and while it does get a bit disturbing at times its never too much. Emily Watson and Dominic West are amazing in their roles and the film never plods or gets boring. If you like this I also recommend See No Evil: The Moors Murders.

Shining Through
Shining Through
by Susan Isaacs
Edition: Mass Market Paperback
Price: £6.04

5.0 out of 5 stars Shining indeed, 11 Nov. 2014
Prior to this I had only read one Susan Isaacs novel (Compromising Positions) but I have to say I much prefer Shining Through. The main character is well drawn and very likable, the period detail is convincing and beautifully done, the story is fun to read and absorbing and there are some very funny moments. There is something for everyone, its a romance, a spy thriller and a historical novel

5.0 out of 5 stars One of her better efforts, 29 May 2013
To be honest, I am not a huge fan of Andrea Newman, even her most famous work A Bouquet of Barbed Wire I didn't actually enjoy finding it tacky and unconvincing and its obvious why shes not as hot as she was when she was first writing in the 60s and 70s.
However, I did enjoy ASOG which I found remarkably better than 'A Bouquet''. The characters are all compelling and sympathetic even the nasty and pathetic ones and the story is absorbing and entertaining.

Edition: Paperback

5.0 out of 5 stars A very underrated author, 25 Mar. 2013
Carol Clewlow is a brilliant writer because she has the talent to tell an entertaining gripping story and at the same time have something profound to say. Wish she would write some more books.

3.0 out of 5 stars 3 and a half stars, 18 July 2012

This review is from: Batman Forever [DVD] [1995] (DVD)
Granted, this film is nowhere near as good as the previous two films, there are several bad and cheesy moments and its flaws are evident but its still entertaining enough to get it through its running time.
Val Kilmer is pretty good as Batman, Chris O Donnell does a good performance as Robin, but his character dosen't get much development for us to really care for him and he does some pretty stupid things at times which makes him harder to like, the same is true of Nicole Kidman's character
Two-face and The Riddler are not bad as villans, but they lack any development or real motives to be sinister, to be taken really seriously or for us to sympathize with them.
So, those few quibbles aside, not a great film especially when compared to Batman and Batman Returns, but still a fun ride. I probably wont be watching Batman and Robin.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good idea, let down by dissapointing second half, 13 July 2012
This review is from: The Cry [VHS] [2002] (VHS Tape)
It started out great, a clever original idea. Sarah Lancashire is convinving and sympathetic in a very difficult role, but she manages it beautifully. The other main actors are also very good. The use of camera angles and music helped to build suspense and create the atmosphere. The second half also started out great, but by the end I didnt feel that all of the plot points had been fully resolved.
Still worth a watch though.

Love on a Branch Line (BBC Books)
Love on a Branch Line (BBC Books)

5.0 out of 5 stars Great read, especially if you like old steam trains, 22 Feb. 2012
It's a pity this was John Hadfields only novel as he shows he has a talent for writting about people and places in this story of a civil servant who journeys to investigate the fictional village of Arcady and finds himself becoming enthralled by the people and their way of living. Its unchallenging stuff, but makes for an enjoyable feel-good read.

5.0 out of 5 stars Not the best of the bunch, but defineately not the worst either, 14 Jan. 2012
I am a big fan of Gerry Andersons puppet shows, granted they will not be to everyones liking, but there is something unique about them. After watching this I can see why people dont like it, it was obvious Mr Anderson was trying to tread new ground when he did this show. It does feel like its trying to be aimed at adults, but the way its executed feels like kids show and thats where the main problem is.
However, there is a trick to enjoying it which im going to let you in on, don't take it seriously, and come on which of Gerry Anderson's shows were mean to be taken seriously? They are just lightweight enjoyable peieces of fluff. And besides, this show does have its perks, the impressive sets and makeup and the well developed, endearing characters.
Cheese, but enjoyable sci fi cheese.

This Is Your Life: A Novel
This Is Your Life: A Novel
by Meg Wolitzer
Edition: Hardcover

5.0 out of 5 stars Very entertaining and relevant, 26 Dec. 2011
Prior to this I had only read one Meg Wolitzer book, Surrender Dorothy which I didn't like finding it dull with boring characters, but this one is a lot better, all of the characters are believable and sympathetic, the story is beautifully written and compelling and perhaps more importantly, deals with a very relevant theme, the issues that women face based on their apperance

5.0 out of 5 stars The Cage, 2 Dec. 2011

Andrea Newmans third novel is an interesting look into the plight of unmarried teenagers during the 1960s. The main character is well drawn out and easy to relate to. Not quite The L Shaped Room, but still gripping and beautifully written
