5.0 out of 5 stars Loved it - beautiful to behold BUT how should it have ended ? SPOILERS, 4 Dec 2013
well - stop if not seen the film, for me the film would have ended perfectly if as SB was stretching on the sand she looks up - oh whats that ? - and a hurtling body in a space suit falls out of the sky and kills her. Wallop. Good yeah ? Got better well stick it in the comments below....How Gravity should have ended...

5.0 out of 5 stars Should be a compulsory read for all involved in mental health., 22 Nov 2013
I would highly recommend this book for anyone interested in the fledgling science of psychiatry - flexible, open-minded with the skeptical humility of the true scientist the author, a highly experienced Psychiatrist, discusses many of the complicated and unresolved issues in this area. The bounderies and fashions of diagnosis, the importance of realism and balance in the subject of psychopharmacology and the sad shrinking of psychotherapy options in many modern services. I am a tired. middle aged psychiatrist and after thirty years full-time NHS work realise how little we know and how dangerous it is to imagine otherwise.

I found reading this book to be therapeutic in the way exposure to reality can sometimes be. I remain grateful to the courage of the author for honestly and humanely describing the limitations of our knowledge. There is nothing scarier than arrogance and ignorance combined - he suffers from neither. Many thanks.

5.0 out of 5 stars why oh why etc etc, 21 Nov 2013
This review is from: Maybury Series One [DVD] (DVD)
Captain Picard and Professor X combined is - interestingly enough - my role model as an NHS psychiatrist : so imagine the intensity of my sadness at the ongoing unavailability of this series on DVD...how can I ever get to see it ?
I have the vaguest memory of one episode once..which I quite liked..but thats all.

Oh why, when everything is so available - every era of music, every format and film, every book and series - how can this be ?

a voice crying in the wilderness.

5.0 out of 5 stars Dazzling stuff from an artist of great range, and greater depth., 21 Nov 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This review is from: On Stage (Audio CD)
Elvis Costello is and has been for some years our greatest song writer. He gets criticised for ranging from jazz to country, from string quartet to electronica - but he should be praised and prized for that range. Back in the seventies he pointed me towards reggae with his first really big single, and has remained a source of guidance ever since.

This concert - mid-career - is a collection of interesting songs and played in a rich variety of ways. Oddly Accidents will happen and watching the detectives which featured on the TV show - available as a DVD - are not on this disc even though there is room for both between the 2 discs. A minor quibble when gem is followed by gem - 'nonsense prevails, modesty fails, grace and virtue turn into stupidity..etc' this is poetry. Start buying and listening and do not stop.

5.0 out of 5 stars Long under rated, now a Cult., 20 Nov 2013

Very much of its time but also fresh, hippy chick gentle folk-psychedelia - listen to samples if at all tempted, I'd recommend it - the title track is a beautiful spaced out rambling thing. Sad that there aren't more albums - she made one disc which was not marketed or even produced with sufficient respect, then disappeared.
I first heard the title track on a magical 'late night tales' compilation by Four Tet and bought it directly.

Good news : cashing in on the first album...er....forty or so years later - the 'follow-up' is coming out in 2014 - something about the colours or spirits of nature...hope the record lives up to the long pause.

4.0 out of 5 stars Interesting varied and unpredictable, 20 Oct 2013
This review is from: The Roots Of Drone (Audio CD)
A really unusual mixture swinging between the well known Miles Davis to unheard of world music fragments and curios - linked by a use of a backing drone. Commend the refreshing and educational range of music here - like the Roots of Goth or even the Roots Of Goth - I recommend anyone with a curiosity for the wilder fringes of music to go for it.

Hey whats next ? the roots of .....

5.0 out of 5 stars Puts Brum and the post WW1 years under a much needed spotlight, 28 Sep 2013
Why has this time and place not been touched upon before - England teeters on the brink of revolution, Ireland boils and damaged soldiers return to a new world - empowered women, corrupt cops and competing gangsters. Birmingham has been sadly under used as a setting for drama. but this cracker addresses that omission good and proper. Stylish to the point of being surreal - spaghetti-junction western with nice cave's gothic music, beautiful bladerunner-ish backdrops of the industrial monster, and a central figure whose intelligence is slowly slowly revealed as the various factions plot and scrap for the missing guns. Just watch it. Everyone from set designers to stars, from writer to accent coach, deserves a resounding cheer.

5.0 out of 5 stars not only sounds good - does you good, 10 Aug 2013
This review is from: Holts And Hovers (Audio CD)
This is like the spirit of english folk music distilled into a range of 'shots'. Each piece is carefully and precisely crafted - establishes an atmosphere and then concludes. New Age ambient music for people in a hurry - there are echoes and hints of all sorts of things - like a wine taster searching for parallel tastes you get hints of Penguin Cafe Orchestra, Medieval music, ECM jazz, oriental and middle eastern flavours but comparisons are odious:best to say this is tasteful, skilfully played and involving music - do yourself a favour...for therapeutic background music that also deserves and rewards closer scrutiny. The cover and its contained photographs - of the locations the pieces were played in and evoke - makes the package worth buying physically and not 'just' downloading the mp3s, and with the new setup here you get both anyway.
