5.0 out of 5 stars A sublime recording., 17 Jan 2007
This is an essential record to any jazz collection. The pairing of Ben Webster and Art Tatum may have appeared questionable yet it works perfectly. If you like the participants and have not heard these timeless performances, you are in for a treat. Desert Island material.

4.0 out of 5 stars The Delightful Ms Clooney., 10 Jan 2007
Anyone who remembers with affection the Rosemary Clooney show on TV will welcome the extracts that have been compiled on to this DVD. It is mercifally free from the awful novelty numbers she hated and was forced to record like 'Come on A My House'. She was worthy of better material and there are a few good standards here, together with guests, and the rapport between her and Crosby on the medley, is a standout. The playing time is lean but if you like Rosemary, buy it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Definitive Doris, 3 Jan 2007
This review is from: Duet (Audio CD)
This is Doris Day's crowning achievement on record. Here we have a batch of quality songs performed in perfect rapport with Andre Previn and his trio. Recorded 46 years ago (1961), time has not diminished these flawless performances. A definitive album which every Doris Day admirer should have.

4.0 out of 5 stars The Under-rated Pete Jolly., 30 Aug 2006
This review is from: Timeless (Audio CD)
Jazz has been well served by pianists,so much so that several have been elbowed aside by sheer force of numbers. Pete Jolly is just one, that didn't receive his dues, and his recent death has made his work all the more precious. This album was new to me, despite it being recorded in 1969. It there fore came as a surprise and delight, since it has proved to be one of his best. This cohesive and swinging trio is recorded 'live' before an attentitive club audience. All seven tunes are given a thorough workout, and as the CD title suggests this is 'timeless' music. Thoroughly recommended to the initiated, but newcomers who take the plunge could be in for a treat.

4.0 out of 5 stars The Elegant Mr. Wilson., 25 Aug 2006
This review is from: I Gotta Rhythm (Audio CD)
Anyone who steers away from jazz because they find it noisy or discordant should listen to pianist Teddy Wilson. He is the epitome of good taste. Teddy Wilson came to prominence as a part of the Benny Goodman Trio and Quartet, as well as backing Billie Holiday. He later had his own big band which floundered, so he returned to small groups and founded his own trio. During the fifties and sixties he recorded several sessions of which this one, is one of the best. Teddy is backed by Gene Ramey, bass and the excellent Jo Jones on drums. Teddy's playing can best be described in one word 'elegant'.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Mature Carmen McRae, 23 Aug 2006
Carmen McRae made several consistently good recordings prior to this, but this was her first great recording. Performed 'live' before and an enthusiastic audience, this proved an ideal setting for the singer to pull out all the stops. Aided by the excellent Norman Simmons Trio, this proved to be a turning point in Carmen's work. Like her idol,Billie Holiday, and for that matter Frank Sinatra, Carmen McRae didn't just sing a song she experienced it. Buy this landmark recoring with confidence.

3.0 out of 5 stars The Unique Carmen McRae, 9 Aug 2006
I first heard Carmen McRae in 1955, when I was 18, and I have been in love with her ever since. Needles to say anything she has done has always been of interest to me. Like Bille Holiday, Sarah Vaughan and Ella Fitzgerald, she was essentially a jazz singer, and her best recordings were with trio's recorded 'LIVE'She didnt need large orchestral backings which tended to obscure the intimacy of her work. The recordings here are therefore not essential but completists will want them. The discerning should first shop for her recordings made at Sugar Hill, Donte's and the Great American Music Hall. The best track on this set is 'The Folks who live on the Hill'.

5.0 out of 5 stars 'Live Piano Recital', 2 Jan 2006
This review is from: Ray Bryant [DVD] [2009] (DVD)
Ray Bryant is one of the under-rated ones as far as jazz piano is concerned. Although he has a long history of supporting other jazz musucians, it was only when he was given the opportunity to record under his own name that it became fully apparent how gifted he was. Ray is a two handed piano player who needs no bass or drums to back him up. On this video his talents are expressed to the full as he explores the blues, gospel and ballads. His performances are a joy. The one word to describe his playing is solid.
