Photography Essentials: Waiting for the Light
Photography Essentials: Waiting for the Light
by David Noton
Edition: Paperback
Price: £14.99

4.0 out of 5 stars Fantastic life..., 19 May 2015

A very good book for fans of Noton's work. I enjoyed reading on from David' & Wendy's previous exploits.. the images are of course beautiful and it shows how much thought and endeavour has gone into each shot. I can't help thinking though that Noton's frequent brand- name-dropping is unnecesary.. its fine to say ' camera bag' and 'triood' .. I think the references to 'Lowepro' and 'Giotto' could be sponsorship .. if not these Companies are getting free advertising. David has a stringent work ethic but for most of us it's unworkable, for that reason it gets 4 stars as the narrative leaves me cold. Maybe its just envy that these guys , no matter how hard they work do indeed have a fantastic life.

5.0 out of 5 stars MONOCHROME EXCELLENCE., 18 Oct. 2014
There's a lot of people complaining about the colour casts, in the product description is clearly states that this filter is ideal for monochrome photography, which just about covers 99% of my work, if you want LE in colour then don't buy it, there are other ( more expensive ) alternatives for shooters who crave colour LE images - this is spot-on for B&W work - screw-ins are not a problem after composing and focussing, if you have a focus-lock/zoom lock, just be careful I would say. Excellent quality when Lee filters are just out of your budget.

I read this years ago and decided to buy a newer, less-dog-eared copy to take to Greece with me in 2010. I was waiting patiently all through the book for things to get going but I was left there, at the pool, a bit disappointed. PKD's sci-fi novels CAN BE a world away from his novels about people pottering about in America, the main character is a pain in the neck, he doesn't care... but he does have some deep feeling for things that don't really matter to the outside world... I am still glad I bought it, I won't give away the ending, read it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Real photography from a real photographer, 4 Jun. 2014

I love this book, not only for it's deliciously-composed photographs but for David Noton's narrative, he whisks us on ten journeys across the globe and, on each one invites us to stand beside him and watch as he plans, studies and finally executes that perfect shot. I recently went to one of his roadshows in Preston called "chasing the light", David has a refreshing outlook to the making of a photograph and has a way of describing all the ingredients that he expertly mixes together to form the images he produces. One thing of note, and something I have always strived to do, and do properly, is to "get it right in-camera" and to become master of your tools, inside of being a computer-drone of a slave to your camera, Photography is about getting out there, learning all the time, seeing the landscape, breathing the air and... chasing the light, it's not about sitting in front of a PC and spending countless hours on Photoshop because you couldn't be bothered learning the art of photography in the first place and thought you would correct all your mistakes afterwards. In an ever-accessible world of digital imagery, David takes us back to the days when producing stunning images took a hell of a lot of hard work and patience. Buy the book, go on the trip, you'll never come back down.

Some of these stories appear in other HP Lovecraft books so I read half of it. The cover title story is insane... read it and never look back.

Comfy, warm BUT the stitching is coming apart in the waistband after just 3 washes and the cord easily pulls out of the garment as there is no toggle at either end... could be better with these little fixes.

Canon EOS 5D Mark II (Expanded Guide)
Canon EOS 5D Mark II (Expanded Guide)
by Andy Stansfield
Edition: Paperback
Price: £14.99

3.0 out of 5 stars And now for something completely the same..., 6 Mar. 2014
Agree with some of the views already published, this book is basically telling you what the user manual has already said. There is also a very bad error on page 235 which states that the CMOS sensor on a 5D mk2 is smaller than the 35mm equivalent and goes on to state the required magnification of 1.6x, this is rubbish, that only applies to a crop-sensor camera of which the 5D mk2 is NOT.
Waste of money. Go out an learn in the field I say, but if you have this camera you should already know exactly what you are doing, unless you've got more money than sense.
