5.0 out of 5 stars A Career defining album, 15 Feb. 2014
This review is from: Benji (Audio CD)
I have been a Kozelek fan for 22 years, which means I've pretty much gone through my adult life with his music. I've not loved all of it - the Portuguese guitar obsession of 2009-11 left me a little cold, for example - but I love and appreciate the way his writing and playing has changed and developed over the years. Many hard-core Red House Painters fans can't seem to understand/accept why he isn't still knocking out the poetry drenched slow-core doom of the early albums - something I find both amusing and ridiculous - but I love the stream of consciousness style of his current work and Benji is surely going to be seen as the masterpiece of this era-Kozelek. I doubt there will be a more engaging, life-affirming, amusing or shattering (yes, all at once!) album about death ever made. Buy it. Study it. Love it.

Looking over the other reviews posted up here the phrase "human condition" crops up in almost all of them and A Stroke of Genius certainly has plenty to say - in its own gloriously unique way - about the misplaced arrogance with which we, quite literally, look down on other creatures. However, it's the detail and charm in the characterisation of mouse protagonist Maximilian Emmanuel Lichtenheld that lifts Thomson's story beyond mere social commentary and provides the reader with a highly entertaining, thought-provoking and ultimately moving experience. Buy and read!

That about sums it up really, but if you're one of the many who felt the Cure ran out of steam in the early 90's, now's the time to return to the fold. This album is full of reminders of the glory days of HOTD, Kiss Me... and Disintegration and whereas The eponymous 2004 album seemed to be a return to form but didn't stand up to repeated listening, I have a strong feeling this collection has some tracks that will ultimately be recognised as Cure Classics. Welcome back Bob...
