Thraxas and the Oracle: Thraxas Book Ten
Thraxas and the Oracle: Thraxas Book Ten
Price: £2.99

5.0 out of 5 stars as ever, excellent, 5 Feb. 2015
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
A real delight to have a tenth Thraxas. It is not a long read but the characterisation remains as deft as ever, and the familiar characters remain a joy. Highly recommended but anyone looking at the tenth in the series will surely have read the preceding nine and will need no persuasion.

5.0 out of 5 stars I think this is stunning. I've worn it for ..., 19 Nov. 2014
I think this is stunning. I've worn it for getting on for a decade and it still lifts my spirits. It is woody and spicy, with a lingering note of incense and with a reasonable but not exceptional longevity. I would have thought suitable for both men and women. Very distinctive.

Doesn't quite add up to the sum of its parts but an excellent book anyway - inventive and original, with telling use of detail and a deft writing style. I enjoyed this very much. Highly recommended.

The Victorian House: Domestic Life from Childbirth to Deathbed
The Victorian House: Domestic Life from Childbirth to Deathbed
Price: £2.99

5.0 out of 5 stars A great book, 15 April 2014
I bought this some years ago for my very elderly mother in law, thinking that it might have some resonance with bits of her childhood but I ended up being the one that was fascinated by the contents. The experience of home - the way in which we use and experiences our homes - the chores that come with homes - these are common denominators. This book helps to explain how our modern houses evolved. And if you live in the UK with its massive stock of Victorian urban housing, this is a book which gives you a powerful sense of the domestic context. Beautifully written, the book wears its scholarship lightly, with a nice balance between quotation, exposition and illustration. I have read the book many times - it is good enough to sustain multiple readings. Highly recommended.

Thinking about Leadership
Thinking about Leadership
by Nannerl O. Keohane
Edition: Hardcover
Price: £19.95

5.0 out of 5 stars One of the best books on leadership, 19 Dec. 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
I bought this book several years ago and it has stood not only the test of time, but also the fact that I have read and re-read it. Most books on Leadership are initially attractive but almost all of them turn out to be unconvincing and lacking in rigour. This book looks at leadership drawing on the author's own experience as a senior academic leader but also using reflections on leadership (and followership) drawn from the lives of famous leaders. I suspect that criticisms of books like this will always have a significant element of personal taste, but for me this book is rigorous and direct and - above all - interesting, which is something I haven't found in other books on the topic.

Great light. Design isn't wonderful: slightly unwieldy - but the quality of light is outstanding. Highly recommended. Very pleased I bought it.

Empires of the Sea: The Final Battle for the Mediterranean, 1521-1580
Empires of the Sea: The Final Battle for the Mediterranean, 1521-1580
Price: £2.99

4.0 out of 5 stars Enjoyable, accessible, narrative history, 16 Aug. 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
An excellent read. Clearly intended to be accessible to the general reader, but with clear reference to secondary sources. It would take a historian to comment on the accuracy of the judgements, but the story of the rise and ebb of Ottoman control of the Mediterranean is full of interest and Crowley's coverage of the key events - Rhodes, Malta, Famagusta, Lepanto - is gripping.

1.0 out of 5 stars Disappointing, 25 Mar. 2013

Initially worked well but after a few weeks the contact has begun to become intermittent and you have to be careful to hold the pen in a particular way in order to ensure that it produces a mark on the screen. Shame - but it was cheap and I guess you get what you pay for.

5.0 out of 5 stars A very very welcome return, 5 Mar. 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
Half way through this ninth Thraxas book, and it is excellent. The same deftness of tone and plot that characterises the series. The long-silence from the author was, I think, in part the consequence of difficulties in dealing with paper publishers - and also the desire to take on new projects like the Werewolf series. Great that disputes with publishers can now just be side-stepped by publishing directly as an e book. A very very welcome return.

I don't normall fuss about prose where I'm focussing on the story but here the prose exactly mirrors the lumpen nature of the plot. I am giving up. A very poor effort.
