5.0 out of 5 stars Different, but equally great, 17 Jan 2014
Yes, as other reviewers have stated before, Series 3 of "Sherlock" is different: Its focus lies more on the characters - mainly the relationship between John Watson and Sherlock Holmes - and less on the cases and deductions. They are still there, but the investigations are not as much in the center as in the previous episodes.

Personally, I love that. The main reason I like this series are its characters and I really enjoyed the way they developed throughout this series 3. Yes, there is more humour in series 3 than in the previous ones, but there are also a lot of scenes that seem to be funny at first sight, but are equally sad once you take the time to think about them. The only time the humour becomes childish is - caution, mild spoiler ahead - during the stag night in episode two. But then again, also childish humour can be entertaining. But this season is absolutly not all about fun and humour: If you've come to love those characters, you're in for an emotional rollercoster, that's for sure.

I'm not going to review every single episode in detail, because I don't want to spoil people who haven't seen the series yet and are still making up their minds weather to watch it or not. I'm just going to say that in the original books, Sherlock came back three years after tumbling down the Reichenbach Fall, John fainted when he found out that his friend was still alive and after that they were just going back to business as usual. The "back to business" proves much more difficult in series 3 of "Sherlock", but I think from the characters' point of view, that's much more believable and a joy to watch. I don't really think it would have been believable that the very intense events of the last episode of series 2 and the two years follwing those events would have had no impact at all on the characters themselves and their relationships.

5.0 out of 5 stars Best so far, 16 Nov 2011
I got all of Michael Ball's concert DVDs and in my opinion this one is the best so far. The sound quality is top-notch, the song choices reach from current chart-hits to "oldies" from the sixties and seventies to musicals, form slow romantic ballads to ubpeat uptempo numbers and Michael himself is at his best. If you already are a Michael Ball fan, this DVD is a must. If you're not: Be ready to become one after buying this DVD. There's also a special about how putting together a concert, including comments by Michael and his background singers.

The setlist is as follows:

Heroes medley (the band playing themes from different "Hero"-movies and series)
Holding out for a Hero
Bad Things
Don't stop believing (Glee-version)
Let the Heartaches begin
Play me
I'm never going to fall in Love again
New York State of Mind
New York Medley:
- On Broadway (with Adrian Hansel and Gary Watson)
- Empire State of Mind (by Laura Tebbutt)
- An Englishman in New York (with Gary Watson)
- Fame (by Holly James)
- Broadway Baby (by Sandra Marvin)
- New York New York
Weekend in New England
Sunset Boulevard intro (band)
As if we never said Goodbye
Sunset Boulevard
Empty Chairs at empty Tables
I dreamed a Dream
Pretty Women
Not while I'm around
This is the Moment
Somebody to love
Avenues and Alleyways
Pencil full of Lead
One Step out of Time
I can't help falling in Love with you
Help yourself
Love changes everything
For once in my Life

5.0 out of 5 stars Perfect, 20 Mar 2011
This review is from: Heroes (Audio CD)
This album is just perfect if you want to lay back and enjoy. Michael's voice is better than ever, smooth and soft and tender as velvet. The album contains 15 songs originally sung by Michael's "Heroes", songs he grew up listening to and with this album he wants to pay homage to the great singers who sang those songs before. These beautiful, mostly romantic songs were great hits in the 1950ies, 60ies and 70ies and are now revived with much love and appreciation by Michael Ball. Listening to this album you can hear Michael's love for these songs and this emotion along with his beautiful voice makes every song a sheer joy to listen to.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great music, interesting behind the scenes footage, 15 Dec 2010
First of all, this is a "Best of" DVD. If you already have Michael Ball's concert DVDs "Live at the Albert Hall", "Live in London", "One Voice" and "Past and Present" and are not interested in learning about Michael Ball off stage or the reasons why he chose to sing the songs on the DVD, then don't buy this DVD because there are no new songs on it.

If you don't know Michael Ball yet or don't own his concert DVDs, this DVD is a great introduction to his work on and off stage. The song choices are great and cover a big spectrum of his work: There are slower and more up-tempo numbers, songs from musicals but also elder and contemporary popsongs. The song section of the DVD is split into different sections: songs from musicals, songs from movies, up-tempo numbers and Michaels favourites, adding up to 25 of Michael's best concert performances.

If you already own Michael's conert DVDs, but are interested in the reasons he chose to sing the songs on the DVD or his work on the radio, as a West End producer, host of a TV show or in the preparations for a concert, then this DVD is also worth buying. Apart from Michael personally introducing each of the songs of the DVD there are four "behind the scenes" interviews about the themes I mentioned that are very interesting and entertaining to watch. I was especially amused about learning why Michael's probably never going to wear a white suit at an open-air concert in Scotland again . . .

All in all, I loved the DVD and would buy it again.

For those who are interested here's a list of the tracks contained on this DVD and the concert DVDs they're originally from:

1. Hot Stuff (Live at the Royal Albert Hall)
2. We have all the Time in the World/Millennium (Live at the Royal Albert Hall)

Michael Ball: The Best Of Michael Ball [DVD]
Dvd ~ Michael Ball

5.0 out of 5 stars Old and new, 11 May 2010
As its title "best of" already indicates, this is not a dvd of one particular concert, but a compilation of fan's and Michael's favourite live performances over the years. As I already have all those live perforances on the concert dvds, I didn't mind Michael's introductions before each song, because they added something new. If you're disturbed by the talking, buy his concert dvds. What sets this dvd apart from others is the unplugged session at the end where he sings eight songs from his latest album and new versions of some older ones. Just accompanied by a piano, contrabass, acoustic guitar and percussion, his voice is just brilliant in all those songs, not drowend by the band as it sometimes happens in the concerts. So even if you already have all his concert dvds, this unplugged session is more than worth buying this DVD.

For those who are interested here's a tracklist of the songs contained on this DVD and the concerts they're originally from:

1. Just help yourself (Live at the Royal Albert Hall)
2. One Step out of Time (Live in London)
3. Dancing in the dark (Live in London)
4. I was born to love you (Live in London)
5. Someone Else's Dream (Live at the Royal Albert Hall)
6. The greatest Man I never knew (This Time - it's personal)
7. Boy from nowhere (Live in London)
8. This is the Moment (Live in London)
9. Empty Chairs at empty Tables (Live in London)
10. Love changes everything (Live in London)
11. Prepare ye the Way of the Lord/Gethsemane (Live at the Royal Albert Hall)
12. The first Time ever I saw your Face (This Time - it's personal)
13. The Way we were/The Rose (Live at the Royal Albert Hall)
14. If tomorrow never comes (This Time - it's personal)
