4.0 out of 5 stars Quality Product, 5 Feb 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
I recently began SW listening and wanted a good introductory radio. This one fits the bill. It is well made and pleasant to use. The LW is a disappointment, even in an interference free spot it is much poorer than my cheap Roberts R9993. MW is average, no better or worse than my 42 year old Sony 6F-21L portable. The FM is really good but I couldn't find a way to switch to mono so if the signal fluctuates or you are in a marginal spot the radio switches back and forth automatically from stereo to mono with a annoying effect on sound quality. Overall sound quality is excellent. I haven't had much luck with the Airband. As others have noted I find the SW/SSB excellent especially away from the house and the noise locally. I haven't yet tried an external antenna. Overall I find the radio easy to use and have had a lot of enjoyment from both the broadcast and ham bands.
I wouldn't recommend it as an all rounder especially if LW is important to you.

Enjoyable and informative portrait of the world of amateur radio with a good mix of technical information, stories and anecdote and debate on a wide range of topics. I knew little about hams and amateur radio and chose this as a primer because I didn't want a dry techie account. This book didn't disappoint. Although squarely set in the ham world of the USA anyone interested in the topic will find it helpful and stimulating. The infectious enthusiasm and inclusive attitudes of the author are paramount.

4.0 out of 5 stars Exceeded Expectations, 7 Jan 2013
This radio seems to have polarised opinion a bit! It seems well made and produces good results on DAB and FM even in the car. I live in a moderate signal area and it locks on to both the local and National DAB multiplexes. I haven't noticed any dropout or burbling even when driving around. It is compact and produces very reasonable sound quality in speech and music, though it's a bit short of bass as you might expect. I will be using rechargeables mainly and chose this over the Pure Move because a new set of decent rechargeables, if or when required, is fairly economic. Controls are easy to use a couple more direct presets would be useful in the car. All round good value for me.

1.0 out of 5 stars Deep Disappointment, 29 Mar 2012
Appalling performance. Excellent sound and features - for two years. At 100 per year to own this is definitely the most catastrophic purchase I have ever made. Looking around the more respected internet audio/tech forums it seems that there is little hope once the set develops problems. There appears to be no genuine support from the manufacturer or their agents, just try their website for a foretaste, the support button doesn't even work! Certainly not a product or company that I would reccommend.
Just for the record I have a Sony 6F-21L 3 band FM portable bought 41 years ago still in daily use. Wake up Pure.

5.0 out of 5 stars Superb Value, 1 Feb 2012
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
Just bought another one of these. The original has given outstanding service over a number of years and is still going strong. The price is very attractive. The 1kW fan boosted element warms a good sized room up quickly and there is a second 1kW convector element for background heat. Combines the advantages of a fan heater and a convector well. Thermostat is responsive. Obviously not silent when the fan is on but acceptable. Neat, neutral colour, stable, overall delighted that it is still available.

3.0 out of 5 stars Interesting and straightforward, 7 Jan 2012
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
The author uses a large number of interesting case studies to examine the way in which stresses of different kinds can lead to unpleasant symptoms which mimic organic disease. I found the categories of stress convincing, including the impact of past events and experiences from childhood. The discussion of depression and anxiety is also very straightforward. It's an easy read for anyone faced with increasing or disabling physical symptoms which are not adequately explained. The premise is that it never hurts your physical or mental health to identify and address past and present stresses in your life and many people may find help and encouragement here.
The book suggests that doctors are poorly prepared to explore the possible impact of stress on health. I doubt that that is the case in the UK where in general and from my experience, rather than underestimate the effects of psychophysical explanations, doctors seem well informed and keen to explore those explanations before or alongside the provision of access to gold standard tests for physical disease. Probably worth trying a sample (Look Inside or Kindle extract) to get a taste of the case study approach. (Get the free Kindle reader app. for your PC laptop etc and you can download samples of many books before buying - brilliant service).

1.0 out of 5 stars Time Expired?, 18 Mar 2011
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This item arrived with a recycling bag heavily taped to the lower portion of the box. Removal of the tape destroys the "Install By" date. If this is time expired stock why not say so? If it isn't why obscure the date? There is absolutely no reason to tape the bag to the box - just put it in the jiffy bag with the cartridge. Might work might not. Definitely not guaranteed 6 months after the Install By date. Won't use again.

4.0 out of 5 stars DCC Problem, 23 Feb 2011

Unfortunately had to return this item due to a fault with the DCC unit keypad. The models are excellent and well detailed. Overall the package is very good value. I think Hornby DCC might suffer from track issues. I found the short wheelbase engine and the dead frog points very challenging at slow speeds and the slightest film on the track interferes with the signal and causes hesitant running. Fixing track firmly and keeping it clean obviously help, and if used at "train set" speeds the running is a lot smoother. Probably ideal as a train set but might be a bit frustrating for someone looking to this set for a route into more serious modelling.

5.0 out of 5 stars Enjoyable practical introduction, 20 July 2010
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
I think this is a brilliant introduction to the Alexander Technique because you can get started right away observing yourself in action and experiencing the beneficial effects of making simple changes to habits you have unwittingly fallen into. The language and the exercises are simple and direct and the underlying principles and concepts emerge as easy to understand and apply in everyday life, to all the routine and repetitive things we do. I have had some Alexander lessons and am a convert to the fantastic benefits, especially the reduction in tension and pain and increased calmness but when I try to explain how this comes about I find people looking puzzled and a little sceptical so I recommend this book which does the job so much better! Highly recommended if you are curious or just want to sample the practice and ideas before having lessons or reading some of the other excellent but longer and more involved books.

5.0 out of 5 stars Perfect single dipole, 28 Mar 2010
Bought this to provide a bit more signal for the DAB tuner my Denon mini system. I am in a medium signal area. Mounted in the loft of our bungalow with a decent downlead it soon pulled in 77 stations including many from the London multiplexes (I live near Cambridge). Its ideal as a non directional aerial. I have been a fan of Triax since I put up one of their five element FM aerials pointed at Peterborough 45 miles away which gives superb FM on the same Denon system. Recommended.
